Highlights D-Day: The Price of Freedom

A tribute to the courageous men who began the liberation of France more than 60 years ago, former troops of the U.S. Army and Navy share their harrowing tales of survival. Five veterans make an emotional journey to the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, the final resting place of 9,000 of their fallen comrades, and speak candidly about the unimaginable horror, despair and fear of the day, while exploring is why these aging men remain heroes to the French people. Sunday, June 5 at 8:00 pm

Lest We Forget: A Survivor’s Story Follow the life of World War II veteran Gustav Potthoff, (pictured, far left) from his birth in Indonesia to his imprisonment in the Japanese slave labor camp responsible for building the infamous bridge over the River Kwai. Potthoff survived the brutal heat, lack of food and vicious captors but remained haunted by his nightmarish four-year captivity in Thailand. Decades later, he began painting visceral yet spiritual scenes of POW camp life–the guards, beatings, jungle, escape attempts and those left behind. Sunday, June 5 at 10:30 pm

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 6/6

Charles Mingus Part 1

6/13 Charles Mingus Part 2 6/20 Bessie Smith No blues singer can escape the influence of Bessie Smith (pictured), "The Empress of the Blues". For over 100 years, this legendary, singer has been and continues to be a major influence on singers and instrumentalists of today. She was larger than life, inexhaustibly creative, and undeniably distinctive. Her legacies of songs speak to everybody; she gave the music its raw, regal poignancy— and marketability.

6/27 Gil Evans

His most famous work was with Miles Davis in the mid'50s with the celebrated albums Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain. But there's much more to Gil Evans' (pictured) (1912-1988) story. In a career spanning more than fifty years—from the early '30s until his death— the legendary "arranger's arranger" created his music using a diverse palette of musical colors, both within jazz and beyond. Evans' music reflects an insatiable appetite for new sounds.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 6/7

Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone and Christian McBride Pianist Cyrus Chestnut, guitarist Russell Malone (pictured) and bassist Christian McBride form an all-star rhythm roll call. Each of these keepers of the jazz flame propels his own group on the stage at Dizzy's.

6/14 The Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra 6/21 American Icons: Dave Brubeck and Ramsey Lewis A smooth pairing as renowned pianists Dave Brubeck (pictured, left) and Ramsey Lewis (pictured, right) take the stage for two rousing sets. On the verge of his tenth decade, Brubeck shows he still is the master of the 88s on Take Five, On the Sunny Side of the Street, and Over the Rainbow. Lewis' gospel and funk tinged sound will lift you out of your seat with The In Crowd, Wade in the Water and more.

She plays and sings a previously unreleased Evans tune, Here Is Something for You, for which she has written a lyric, and McPartland gives her own Evans tribute on B Minor Waltz.

6/15 Marian McPartland Selects - Hazel Scott Singer and pianist Hazel Scott (pictured) was one of the first African-American women to break the color barrier with roles in major Hollywood films, and the first to host her own television show in 1950. On this 1980 Piano Jazz, Scott performs Memories of You and duets with McPartland on Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me.
