Placing Out: The Orphan Trains Between 1854 and 1929, an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned and runaway children, primarily from industrialized cities in the East, boarded trains bound for Midwestern farming communities in search of a better life. Experts consider this period of mass relocation— often referred to as the Orphan Train Era—as the precursor to the modern foster care system. Discover the hopeful, sad and frequently poignant reminiscences from surviving riders, their descendants, historians and local officials who put a human face on this time in history. Bandleader/Arranger/Pianist Fletcher Henderson
3/14 Bandleader/Showman Cab Calloway He was the "Hi De Ho" man, a legendary showman, gifted singer, bandleader, actor and fashion trendsetter. This larger than life figure, immortalized in cartoons and caricatures, was also the leader of one of the greatest bands of the Swing Era. As an incubator for new talent, Cab's (pictured) band launched the careers of Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Milt Hinton, Cozy Cole, Chu Berry and Doc Cheatham, among others.

3/21 Saxophonist Paul Desmond Alto saxophonist Paul Desmond's (pictured) airy tone was just one aspect of his great artistry. He was a wholly original improviser whose unfailing lyricism, clear logic, and advanced harmonic sense produced some of the finest solos on record. Many of these solos were recorded during his long association with pianist Dave Brubeck. Their chemistry led to enormous success during the '50s and '60s, including one of the most popular jazz recordings of all-time—Desmond's Take Five.
