JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 5/2

Saxophonist Zoot Sims

5/9

Sarah Vaughan Musicians and audiences alike marveled at the ease with which Sarah Vaughan (pictured) moved up and down her four-octave range, turning even the most mundane songs into operatic riffs. Her sound possessed a full-bodied purity, with an approach not unlike an instrumentalist. Early in her career, "Sassy" cut her teeth on bebop, performing with Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. She also ventured into the pop world, recording hits such as Brokenhearted Melody, Day-O, and Send in the Clowns.

5/16 Benny Waters

As a player whose incredible longevity linked him to the jazz pioneers, Benny Waters (pictured) (1902-1998) reemerged late in life as one of the great, unsung saxophonists in jazz. He had played with all the legends-King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Jimmie Lunceford, and Hot Lips Page. After a forty-year stay in France, Waters returned to the United States. In the final years of his life he was discovered by a new generation and was very active: playing jazz festivals, composing, recording, and telling stories.

5/10 The Essentially Ellington Festival 5/17 Afro-Cuban Fiesta with Paquito D'Rivera 5/24 Mary Lou Williams Centennial “Perpetually contemporary” was how Duke Ellington described the pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams (pictured). In a fifty-year career, she changed with the times, but always kept her soulful style. To mark her centennial, pianists Geri Allen, Geoff Keezer, and Dan Nimmer join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to honor the “First Lady of Jazz.”

Gettin' Ready To Spring Into Action at Jazz 91

By Claire Greene, KCSM Fund Drive Producer

Yes, the Bay Area’s Jazz Station is poised, once again, to host our Spring Membership Drive. This is the one that ends our fiscal year and, if all goes well, puts the station on good financial footing, and allows us to have a whole summer of pledge-free jazz. The fun begins on May 10th!

PICTURED: Jessev"Chuy" Varela, host of Latin Jazz and Melanie Berzon, host of jazz in the afternoon

What’s exciting about this spring drive is that we’ll be revealing some very cool ways your membership dollars have been put to use recently and, as always, we’ll be laying out some very hip thank you gifts and broadcasting as many handpicked specials as our Program Director, Melanie Berzon, can find. You may recall a few of the ones she’s gotten for us in the past: Nina Simone, Sam Cooke and Leonard Bernstein – just to name a few. They’re always really good and we love it when we can find a special and match it with a terrific thank you gift. Believe me, that’s a lot harder to do than it sounds. Speaking of thank you gifts, our Winter Drive revealed an interesting trend. Turns out that more of you now prefer to have your entire donation go to the station. That’s right, over half of you who contributed asked not to get a gift. That’s awesome because as much as we love to thank you with an extra little something, this presents problems, as a few of you who’ve waited and waited for gifts, or just didn’t get them, are likely aware. Add to that the fact that music distribution will soon be a “download only” transaction and you can see that that will have a profound effect on the thank you gifts we can offer. But never fear, we’re working on our own bag of tricks so that what’s coming down the pike doesn’t mow us over. As always, thank you so much for all the support you give and continue to provide KCSM. We love our listeners and are always eager for your feedback. In fact, that’s another really nice thing about the fund drives. Our phone volunteers are very passionate about the music and the station and they love to talk to those of you who call and get your story and discover why you love jazz and what made you decide to support the station. That’s what creates this wonderful community called Jazz 91. There’s nothing like it! All right, get ready to have some fun during our Spring Membership Drive and follow our progress and specials on-line at www.kcsm.org as we count down to ending our fiscal year in the black! And to that successful end, be sure to tell your friends to listen in and pledge. Viva Jazz 91!
