A Veteran's Day Musical Salute

Thursday November 11th from 6-10am

featuring live broadcasts of the Big Bands of the 30s and 40s from across the U.S., and a Special Airmen of Note program hosted by Dick Golden with guests The New York Voices, Joey Defrancesco and Gary Smulyan.

KCSM FM

is upgrading

Thanks to the voters of San Mateo County, KCSM members and the San Mateo County Community College District, the jazz station is getting three much needed updates. The first change is a larger jazz library. For years, our CD's and LP's have been scattered in various locations. The removal of two walls now allows all of our music to be in one location, sectioned alphabetically by genre, and also includes an area for our digitizing equipment. This was a huge project for the staff, students and volunteers to design, sort and alphabetize. The staff is getting used to the new way to look for music and we are digitizing once again!

The second improvement was our new tower, antennas and transmission lines. The College District wanted to have a campus center...in the center of campus; however, the KCSM-FM tower was located in this area. So, over Labor Day weekend, a new tower was lifted into its new location on the south side of the Library. Although the FCC rules prohibit more power or a taller tower, we were able to install a back up antenna. This will be a great asset to KCSM as this will allow scheduled down time to repair a problem without going off the air for long periods of time. Testing of the new transmission system will happen shortly and we hope to be switched over to the new tower permanently by the end of October.

Last is the addition of a second control room which allows easier servicing of equipment. The updated equipment means less labor intensive work for the announcer and automatically sends song information to the jazzlist.org playlist site, and to the RDS information in your newer radio information screens. We hope that these changes continue to bring you your favorite Jazz in a more robust, reliable fashion, as well as giving you just a little bit more information at your finger tips! We could not do all of this without your support.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm

11/1 Louis Armstrong-The Trumpeter 11/8 Max Roach An innovative drummer, bandleader, composer, and educator, Max Roach (pictured) was a musical renaissance man. He was Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie's drummer of choice as they developed bebop in the '40s, and his innovations forever changed the way drums are played. In the '50s he co-led (with trumpeter Clifford Brown) one of the seminal groups of jazz, bringing bebop to new levels of sophistication. In the '60s, he created a range of compositions reflecting the struggle for civil rights. Photo credit: Francis Wolf © Mosaic

11/15 Charlie Parker, Part 1 Charles "Yardbird" Parker (pictured) was a self-taught innovator who could fly higher and cut deeper than any other musician of his day. He influenced generations of musicians. He accomplished all of this and other feats despite a crippling drug addition that ended his life at thirty-four. Learn about "Bird" the improviser, follow his instrumental virtuosity from his early days in Kansas City to his bebop experiments in NY, to his ill-fated trip to Los Angeles in 1945.

11/2 Beyond the Spanish Tinge Get up and move! Saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera (pictured) paints the landscape of the Spanish tinge. Mambo, bossa nova, salsa—it’s all here. D’Rivera, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis pay homage to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astor Piazzolla, and offer D’Rivera’s own Samba for Carmen.

11/9 Dizzy’s Atmospheres: Phil Woods, Cedar Walton and Steve Turre 11/16 The Music of Fats Waller 11/23 Nursery Song Swing Wynton and the orchestra give a big band twist to children classics such as Chicken Rhythm, Three Blind Mice and Liza Jane. Guest soloist 16–year–old alto saxophonist Grace Kelly (pictured), 17–year–old tenor saxophonist/ clarinetist Carl Majeau and 13–year–old violinist Jonathan Russell join Wynton on stage.

11/3 Pianist/Singer/Composer Dr. John Vocalist Catherine Russell (pictured) is the child of jazz royalty: her father Luis Russell was Louis Armstrong's music director and her mother is guitarist Carline Ray. On this Piano Jazz, she shares stories of some the lesser known tunes of the 1930s and '40s performed by Mae West, Fats Waller, and others. With her accompanist Mark Shane, Russell performs Troubled Waters and Waller's Inside This Heart of Mine.

11/10 Catherine Russell 11/17 Marian Selects: Chick Corea Pianist, composer and NEA Jazz Master Chick Corea (pictured) is one of the most creative and inventive musicians in the jazz world today. Along with John McLaughlin, his Five Peace Band won a 2010 Grammy for instrumental jazz album. On this Piano Jazz from 2002, he solos on Monk's Mood and joins McPartland for an evocative version of his legendary tune Spain.
