By Dante Betteo, Radio Station Manager

Gratitude

Now that summer is behind us, and as we approach the season of giving, I would like to take a moment to reflect and give thanks to all those who help keep KCSM-FM on the air. To all of you who listen to KCSM, either here in the Bay Area, around the country, or abroad, a big thank you; for without you we wouldn't have a station or a reason for being. To all of our members and major givers, a big thank you for your financial support, which allows us to pay our bills and keep the station on the air. To all our volunteers, who show up day in and day out, helping us with mailings, digitizing vinyl albums, answering phones during our pledge drives, and doing a myriad of other things that need to be done to operate a public radio station; we can't say thank you enough, for without you we couldn't operate as efficiently and effectively as we do. To all those businesses that provide breakfast, lunch and dinner during our drives, we couldn't do it without you; as a well-fed volunteer, is a happy volunteer. To all those businesses that support us with underwriting dollars, you are one of the reasons that we've been able to shorten our pledge drives, helped us grow and become a more financially stable station. Our listeners and our staff cannot thank you enough. I would also like to give a big and very special thank you to our staff: a handful of professionals who through the years have helped make KCSM a great place to work, and a unique and exceptional destination for jazz fans like you. Please tune in, and think of KCSM when it comes time to give thanks around the dinner table this holiday season. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving in the company of your loved ones. My deepest gratitude as always.

Jazz 91 Preview

have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm

11/2 Joshua Abrams

Bassist Abrams is a cornerstone of the Chicago jazz scene, but over the last five years he has gained national exposure with his “Natural Information Society”, a group that fuses jazz improvisation with non-traditional instruments and trance-like droning rhythms.

11/9 Herb Geller

Geller was a sparkling virtuoso of the alto saxophone who had a brief popularity in the Los Angeles jazz scene of the 50’s, followed by half a century of making great music in Europe, almost completely ignored by the US press.

11/16 Masabumi Kickuchi

Kikuchi was one of the most significant jazz artists to emerge from Japan. He had important recordings with Joe Henderson and Paul Motian as the bookends of his career, and in the middle produced many piano recordings that are truly unique, aesthetic, stark and powerful.

11/23 Erik Jekabson

Trumpeter Erik Jekabson is one of the reasons the Bay Area is a great place to see jazz. He leads groups covering everything from bebop to New Orleans, and has established himself as a master composer through commissions from the SF Symphony.

11/30 Kenneth Terroade

Largely forgotten tenor saxophonist Terroade put forth a powerful series of appearances as a sideman in Paris in the late 60’s, and then disappeared. His expressive and free style sounds fresh almost 50 years after his heyday.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm

11/3 Kamasi Washington in LA

Saxophonist and composer Washington, 34, has been working on releasing his album The Epic for the better part of five years now. His 10-piece band continues experimenting with a brand of jazz that resonates with their own generation’s lived experience.

11/10 Marquis Hill Blacktet in Chicago

Trumpeter Hill has shot to international renown recently, especially after winning the Thelonious Monk Competition. Jazz Night caught up with Hill when he returned to his native Chicago for a string of shows and touring his old South Side haunts.

11/17 Upcomers and Upstarts: Jazz at Lincoln Center

There’s a scene and community that’s developed around after hours at Dizzy’s Club CocaCola, the club environment that’s part of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jazz Night in America wanted to know what drives these guys, posing as a fly on the wall as they listen to records, and catching some who get a rare opportunity to present their own music at Dizzy’s.

11/24 Sabertooth Saturday Night at the Green Mill in Chicago

Every year for about 23 years, one group has held a midnight to 5 a.m. time slot on Saturday nights. It’s a quirky band, co-led by saxophonist Pat Mallinger and Cameron Pfiffner, which swings hard (and a little off-kilter) among the hardcore fans. Follow Pat and Cameron to the gig and then stay up all night with the Sabertooth organ quartet.

piano jazz WITH marian mcpartland Wednesday at 9 pm

11/4 Jaki Byard

Multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and composer Jaki Byard (1922 – 1999) played jazz piano as well as alto and tenor saxophone. On this Piano Jazz from 1995, Byard solos on his own European Episode and joins McPartland for Rose Room and In a Mellow Tone.

11/11 Hot Club of Detroit

Seventy years after Django Reinhardt’s Quintette du Hot Club de France fused Gypsy guitar with the jazz of the day, a new incarnation emerged in the Motor City. The music the Hot Club of Detroit plays for this 2009 Piano Jazz session ranges from traditional Gypsy jazz on Coquette to the bal musette waltz Passions.

11/18 Patricia Barber

Patricia Barber is a pianist and singer solidly grounded in the jazz idiom while eclectic in her style. She recorded a series of albums, each establishing a wider audience for her music. In this 2002 Piano Jazz Barber performs her original song If I Were Blue, and McPartland joins her for Autumn Leaves.

11/25 Hilton Ruiz

Hilton Ruiz (1952 – 2006) was a jazz pianist in the Afro-Cuban and bebop styles. A child prodigy and a teenager professionally working primarily with Latin music groups, Ruiz went on to work with major jazz artists like Frank Foster, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, and Joe Newman. On this 1988 Piano Jazz, Ruiz solos on his own composition Home Coming and duets with McPartland on I’ll Remember April.

in the moment with jim bennett Thursday at 9 pm 11/5 Morchestra

The 17 piece Morchestra, led by arranger, composer and guitarist Tony Corman, recorded at the California Jazz Conservatory, in Berkeley, on April 24th, 2015, featuring vocalist Ed Reed, who premiers a set of new charts, written to showcase his romantic stylings.

11/12 A Tribute to Clifford Brown & Max Roach

“Studies Around A Study In Brown,” A Tribute to Clifford Brown & Max Roach with trumpeter Darren Johnston’s Quartet, recorded at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland as part of the In The Moment Concert Series, produced by Jim Bennett. With Hamir Atwal, John Wiitala and KCSM’s own Patrick Wolff.
