Behind the Jazz Datebook By Robert Holt
Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of KCSM’s Jazz Datebook? Did you ever think about how all the jazz information from this diverse and vibrant area known as ‘The Bay’ gets to KCSM? The person behind the organization and publicity of the venues largely comes down to me.
Pictured: robert holt, jazz datebook editor
Hailing from merry old England, in my early teens I had a keen interest primarily in motorcycles and engineering in general. After 5 years working as a mechanic I changed direction and moved into information technology and worked in that field for a decade. Without a degree of any kind and wanting to finally complete my education to a Bachelor of Science level, I decided to narrow my generalized vocation and specialize in Computer Forensics. This culminated in a rather drastic move to the U.S. to get back on the education bandwagon. First stop, The College of San Mateo where, as well as studying full-time, I managed to get a part time job working on the Jazz Datebook at KCSM. I’ve been working on the Jazz Datebook for just over 2 years now. We provide a service to the masses, compliments of KCSM. Artists and venues get exposure on air and the web, free of charge, just by filling out a form on our website; and listeners get their jazz concert info by just listening in or logging on to www.kcsm.org! A majority of my time is spent editing events that have been submitted online and trying to make them as attractive and user friendly as possible. For example, I can add pictures to go alongside events and I can edit the pictures by cropping and changing the resolution. This helps to put a face to a name. Another way for venues and musicians to be seen online is to place pictures of their venue and events up on various pages around KCSM’s Jazz 91 section. What better way to get noticed, than to have listeners go online and have that ‘you are there’ feeling of a recent gig? I feel that a radio station shouldn’t just be a number on the dial. It should be completely interactive. Websites, blogs, forums, video and many other mediums should be embraced to give that ‘lots to explore’ feeling. This is why I am proud to be part of the team here at KCSM. The datebook service that I maintain and continue to build is very important to me mainly because of the passion I have for the station. Music can lift the soul!

THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm
The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

A great big Thank You to all of our fantastic volunteers who gave up their time to answer phones during our Fall Fund Drive. Without each and every one of you, we wouldn't be able to do what we do...continue to bring you great jazz 24/7, 365 days a year!
R enewal ...P ostcards !
Over the past few years, we've seen a real drop-off in the number of people who donate through the mail. We've adjusted our direct mail solicitations accordingly, and this year, in order to cut costs, we have pared our renewal reminders down to...a single postcard! So if you're NOT a "pledger", keep your eyes peeled for the oversized renewal postcard coming your way in the next few months. And if the spirit moves you, you're welcome to make an additional donation anytime! Thanks, as always, for your support - this year more than ever before!
Thank you to these generous sponsors who donate products to make our pledge drives successful! Support these vendors who support your Jazz Station! Want to help? Contact Lavine at 650.524.6931
