On The Cover September 2010 Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. On the 2000 Census form, people of Spanish/ Hispanic/Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or "other Spanish/Hispanic/Latino." More than 35 million people in the United States identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the 2000 Census.

Highlights Solar Car: The Secrets of RA7

Witness first-hand the 2009 World Solar Challenge held in Australia's outback. Teams of students from around the world are tasked with building a vehicle powered by solar engery to compete in an incredible journey that covers 1800 miles from northern to southern Australia cutting across the vast continent. Follow an unlikely team of students as they face the forces of nature, technology and the human spirit in the race to the finish line. Will they make it? Tuesday, September 1 at 10:30 pm

Camp Victory: Afghanistan Follow the story of U.S. National Guardsmen stationed in Afghanistan and the Afghan officers assigned as their mentees. Although the U.S. has poured military aid into Afghanistan, money alone does not produce an army; people do. And these Afghans and Americans have more in common than anyone would expect. With lives on the line and the military budget ballooning, can a modern Afghan army be created when 80% of the enlistees are illiterate; all are impoverished; the weaponry is second rate, and the enemy is elusive, dangerous and lawless? Tuesday, September 7 at 9:30 pm

2501 Migrants: A Journey Each day, thousands of primarily poor and young Mexicans abandon their native homes in search of jobs and the promise of a brighter economic future. Oaxacan artist Alejandro Santiago returned to his village after more than a decade living abroad to find a virtual ghost town, and the sense of emptiness he felt inspired a monumental installation art piece comprising of 2,501 life-size clay sculptures, each symbolizing a migrant who left his village. Tuesday, September 14 at 8:00 pm

As Long As I Remember: American Veteranos Examine the steep personal toll and enduring legacy of the Vietnam War on three artists from south Texas. From their upbringing in the Mexican-American community, their military service in Vietnam and their lives after the war, their poignant and powerful recollections illuminate the minority experience in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps when the Mexican Americans accounted for approximately 20 percent of U.S. casualties despite comprising only 10 percent of the country’s population. Tuesday, September 14 at 9:30 pm

Phones, Food, Friends, Fun…. Fund Drive!!!

By Clair Greene Fund Drive Producer

Is it that time of year again? You bet! Jazz 91’s Fall Membership Drive starts on Sept. 14th and runs through the first of October. As always, we’ve got some fun membership drive antics up our sleeve: good programming; great music; great gifts; and, of course, our fabulous on-air cast of characters who do their best to make this necessary ritual of public broadcasting as painless as possible. First, we plan to do some celebrating! Yeah, the Virgos and Libras in the jazz birthday booth are due some attention. We’ve got Trane, we’ve got George Gershwin, we’ve got Bud Powell, we’ve got Ray Charles – who was born on the same day as John Coltrane, and we’ve got Cannonball Adderley and B.B. King!! (Plus, don’t tell anyone, but KCSM’s manager is a Libra so someone’s going to have to bake a cake and bring some candles on that day!) While we’ll have a nice selection of thank you gift CD’s from our birthday celebrants, we’ve also got 2 really terrific books on jazz. The first is the New York Times Critic’s Guide to the 100 Most Essential Recordings. In it, critic Ben Ratliff offers valuable insights and opinions, placing each of his 100 selections within the context of the time it was released and carefully noting the trends in jazz and artistic breakthroughs. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to deepen his or her knowledge of jazz. The other book selection is Nat Hentoff’s just released At the Jazz Band Ball: 60 Years on the Jazz Scene. In it Hentoff draws from his decades-long history as a jazz writer to talk about the music as an art form, as a way of life, and as a part of the condition of the times. He explores jazz and the civil rights movement, jazz and Hurricane Katrina, jazz and spirituality, and the overall family of jazz. The book is comprised of short pieces. Each one offering the reader a valuable vignette of the music we love. So get ready for some celebrating, for some interesting programming, for some fun gifts to choose from – hey, we’ve even got a 1000 piece jazz puzzle that will blow your mind for some seriously fun fund raising. We’ve gotta do it! We’ve gotta make our goal and we know our listeners – you! – are the best insurance we’ve got to keeping KCSM alive. Thanks for all you do and spread the word: Jazz is Alive on KCSM, 91.1 FM – the best little jazz station in the nation!

and the

Challenge is on...You!

For FM Pledge, how about a Challenge Grant of $250 or more? It's a great way to double your contribution, give your business or yourself a plug, and gives the drive energy to meet our goal. OR, consider a sustainer contribution to the station, from $10/month and up. Become a Leadership Circle member with its "insider" ticket and jazz event benefits at the $1,000 level...its just $83 a month. Best of all, either option is easy to do. Call Barbara at (650) 524-6910 or email her at barbara@kcsm.net and she will be happy to set this up for you.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 9/6

Pianist Art Tatum

9/13 Miles—Miles Styles Trumpeter Miles Dewey Davis (pictured) dominated jazz for much of the latter half of the 20th century. While his trumpet sound is almost instantly recognizable, he refused to be boxed in any one style, constantly developing fresh musical shapes and structures.

9/20 Miles—Kind of Blue

Miles Davis's album Kind of Blue is widely recognized as one of the most important jazz recordings ever. Out of two fairly routine recording sessions in 1959 came the modal jazz masterpiece that's become one of the best-selling jazz recordings of all time.

9/27 Vocalist Johnny Hartman He followed in the wake of Billy Eckstine and Nat "King" Cole, two singers who personified the "black baritone movement" of the late '40s and '50s. Overshadowed by these two, Hartman (pictured) never achieved the popularity he deserved. Through the release of the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood's Bridges Of Madison County and the rerelease of a recording with John Coltrane, the public has rediscovered this wonderful balladeer.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 9/7

Trumpets and Trombones The brilliant trumpeter Tom Harrell (pictured) and legendary altoman Charles McPherson lead off with Jimmy Cobb, Ray Drummond, and Ronnie Matthews. New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton brings his quintet, and trombonists Wycliffe Gordon and Ronald Westray lead their ensemble Bone Structure. A whirlwind hour! Hosted by Billy Banks.

9/14 Legends of Blue Note 9/21 Basie and the Blues 9/28 Karrin Allyson, Sachal Vasandani and Carla Cook Three modern interpreters of song offer distinctive moods at the House of Swing–Karrin Allyson provides a versatile expressiveness; rising star Sachal Vasandani delivers a cool sophistication; and Detroit native Carla Cook (pictured) brings her blues-inflected style.

Bach remembers the legacy of this iconic image, including those who have appeared on Piano Jazz: Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Hank Jones, Roy Eldridge, Milt Hinton, and Gerry Mulligan.

9/22 Joan Stiles with guest host Jon Weber Pianist Joan Stiles (pictured) is known for her brilliant playing, painted by a deep understanding of the roots of jazz. As a full-time educator, Stiles has been presenting the music of Mary Lou Williams for the past decade. She also knows how to swing on a Monk tune or two. On this session with guest host Jon Weber, Stiles performs her tunes Spherical and Hurly-Burly, and a duet on Jitterbug Waltz.
