Metabolic Park VERTICAL GROWING

The reason I chose this site was because the Cornfield was the first project I worked on when I transfered into Cal Poly’s Landscape Architecture program. At that time, I did not know anything about Landscape Architectue, and therefore my design was obviously not very extensive. Suprisingly my studio teacher that time was also the same teacher for this class. This was another chance to work on something that is done before and making it better. Going back to the site was a different experience than 4 years ago, although the park is still the same look it use to be, the way I viewed the park was different. To me, it meant more than just a local park for the surrounding community. It is important piece of land that is small and flat, but can eventually become something tall and huge.

Design Approach Located in the heart of Los Angeles, Cornifield is an important piece of the urban fabric for the Angelenos. The new Arroyo Seco Specific Plan is aiming to built a harmonious community surrounding the cornfield and LA River. There are already many proposed interesting recreational parks and wetland restoration projects planned around the site, which it is excessive to have any more parks to be developed. While being in the center of all transportational system and possible new commercial and residential development, it is important the park can transform into a form of resource to the community in order to accommodate the influx of new residents that will feed off it. A new meaning to the park can be in many ways, and what I will be exploring in my design, is the possibility of transforming the cornfield into a metabolic system. Where a vertical farming system can be implemented and produce fresh and affordable food to the local community while combining transportaional, recreational and cultural purposes into a whole system.
