BALANCE

FEMALE SALE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2021

1:00 PM | AT THE RANCH NORTH OF LAWRENCE, KS

SWEARNGIN RANCHES, LLC

BALANCE. This female offering is a life’s work! It’s really that plain and simple. Many of you know us through 33 years of selling bulls and in the last few years we have let out a little sample of females. This offering allows you to sort through some of our top females that have been built in this environment over the last 42 years. Balance has always been the focus of our breeding program with fertility and maternal efficiency the keys to our success. We have now tested DNA tested over 330 head through AG Boost, and we couldn’t be more pleased with what the data shows. Extreme consistency, BALANCE! We welcome all of you to evaluate our offering and understand you will see many things done differently, like moving past EPD’s and using a complete DNA system in AG Boost, along with actual production. AG Boost does NOT manipulate the DNA values of our animals like associations and EPD’s do, it’s their true genetic value. The cow herd is maintained 100% year-round on perennial Northeast Kansas forage and the same grass is used to supplement them through the winter months. The cows on sale day will be brought in off grass pastures where they have spent their lives. No feed, or Silage is ever used on our cows as we aren’t farmers. They have been bred and managed for generations on this forage. The ones that couldn’t produce in this environment were sold for beef. You will notice our pedigrees are all very consistent and full of the proven “Legendary” sires that have proven themselves to be the benchmark of the Angus breed. We have spent a lifetime culling genetics back to what truly worked on forage, efficiently and with critical longevity. These cattle have proven themselves to work in a wide variety of environments and forages, because of the way we have bred and programmed them. We would like to invite you to join us on September 25th, the Prairie is beautiful in late September. The sale will be broadcast on LiveAuctions.tv to make it easier for everyone wanting to participate. All photos have been taken of the cattle in their natural habitat. No clipping or artificial presentation or photoshopping. We believe in honest representation of what they truly are. We take all photos and videos, no professionals used. TESTIMONIAL

“I have bought Angus bulls from the Swearngin and Guffey family for about 13 years now. Having been a rancher that bought some high dollar Angus bulls from name ranches and unhappy with results I was seeing. With these name brand bulls I was seeing cow fertility, feet, udders and hard doing cattle as result in my commercial herd. The Swearngin and CG bulls since have been a breath of fresh air. They have crossed extremely well with my Salers based commercial herd and used in my Salers Optimizer and Shorthorn Plus herds. Comparing these to calves from previous bulls; weaning weights have been a solid 75 to 100 pounds better, while mature female are moderate, efficient and fertile factories. These are not number Angus, the proof is in the pudding! The commercial calves sold have consistently topped the markets every time they sell and I get steady calls for replacement females. They feed great and hang a premium carcass. A great group of cattle coming up for sale, bulls and females that work and make you money. No frills and bred for the long haul!” — Zane Martin

ARE CATTLE TODAY A FAD? It had been over 10 years since we had retained ownership in a pen of our calves. Years earlier we did, as most of our cattle were commercial, and it was part of our normal annual production cycle. In fact, years ago, the Angus association sponsored a National Carcass Challenge. We entered a pen of steers and were 10th in the nation. Market fads change and we all are guilty of following along believing it's a better option, and we hope to get our ego stroked. As full-time 100% ranchers that thought loses its luster when your calves fail to pay the bills for the year. This is when everything gets real, or you sell your toys and go home. Ranching has always been a low-margin business. That realization hit us from the beginning in the early 1980s when interest was 18%. This has made us watch and understand from the beginning the importance of efficiency, focus and balance. We aren’t farmers, we raise grass and cattle in an environment that sees every extreme from nature. Along the way, we too got lost for a while and followed the popular fad for a time believing the marketing that we must make more, do more, feed more. It didn't take us long to understand that would lead us to bankruptcy. This past spring, we took a load of steers and fed them at a CAB feedlot in Iowa. What was our goal? We wanted to see the truth of the Balanced trait of Angus's ability to perform in the modern feedlot and carcass values. We hadn't used "modern, Popular" genetics that had been promoted as superior for feeding, carcass, and profitability.

14

The results were as follows: Our load of steers arrived at the feedlot on January 8, 2021. Were processed with an average starting weight of 793 pounds. All these steers were produced here on our ranch and all sired by our herd bull battery. They were put on a ration to gain 3.5 pounds per head per day to be finished in 160 days which, according to the feedlot manager, was the average for their lot. On April 27, Tom got a phone call and said the steers were ready, He had just brought a few random steers in to weigh them, and the largest one was weighing over 1500 pounds, so we headed to Iowa. One of the interesting things to me that I rarely see accounted for on a breakeven is… Every calf no matter the operation must pay for their mother. That's their job! It’s her job to have a calf annually that pays the annual bills on the ranch. This is where u see the segmentation of our industry. Yet, only we the cow/calf guy must as the other three main segments only have their hands in our pockets. Let's start by talking about this value to the operation’s profitability. The national average cow cost 15 years ago was $400 per cow per year. Today that cost has climbed to $900 per cow, which is a 225% increase, according to LMIC. Why? Feed costs haven't escalated 225%, Land values have increased, however grazing costs have stayed relative to area. It comes down to cow ability, longevity, and efficiency compared to the number of pounds of calves weaned. As the industry fads have pushed for larger calves, the actual number of calves weaned has shrunk to 85% of the average herd. Now 85% of the calves must pay for 100% of the cows. Over the past 40 years, we have strictly culled those cows. Why? She produces a marketable calf each year or she becomes her calf's value and is replaced, which costs the operation again unless she is over five years of age and has paid for herself. So now not only has this cow not raised a calf to pay her expenses, we must retain another heifer to replace her, so we lose those dollars also. Cows that don't last at least six years eat up your profit on the backside. In our operation all losses are correlated back to their genotype, the pedigree holds all the answers. This has led us to the five sire lines we use today, the rest had too many issues/syndromes.

SWEARNGIN ANGUS FEMALE SALE — SEPTEMBER 25, 2021

OUR STEERS — 44 HEAD

As we removed those inconsistent genetics, Balance became evident. The cattle worked better with our environment and they required less from us and produced more. What does 85% calf crop mean for your operation in 2020? At the average steer and heifer price of $1.30/lb, $608 was your average take-home per cow. (550lb calf, national average X $1.30/ lb = $715/calf X 85% = $608/cow unit.) The average cow herd today just lost $292/per head. ($900 - $608= -$292) Now you must replace 15% of your cow herd, so take away another 15% of your heifers to sell that must replace the cows. You are now down to a 70% calf crop to sell. In 2020 the average cull cow value was $57.65/ cwt, so if you have a 1400-pound cull cow, you got $807.10. The 1400-pound cows' annual cost is $900, you again have gone into the hole just trying to pay for the larger cows annual cost, and now you must pay an additional $1800 to develop the heifer for two years to replace the cows you lost. These are compounding negative economic effects on your operation. Our annual cow cost has remained at $500 per cow, and we weaned a 94% calf crop. We are already $400.00 per head, better than average for annual cow cost. We further added 100 more cows to the same infrastructure and land resources, increasing that value by another ¼. This also adds to our balance sheet with an additional 100 cows and 94 calves annually. We have profited $172.10/head on the base herd, now add another 94 calves in on the same land resources. $672.10 this is how efficiency and consistency compound your profit picture. We replaced 6% of our cows compared to 15%, which is the average. We can sell 9% more heifers than the average. The compounding effects are what sneaks up on cattle operations. Now that we have set the background for profitability on the ranch, here is what our steers did on feed.

• Start weight was 793 pounds, January 13, 2021 • End weight 1351 pounds, May 14, 2021 • Average gain per head 558 pounds • Average Daily Gain 4.61 pounds per head per day on 44 head, eating 25.57 pounds per head per day is a conversion of 5.55. (National average conversion is 4.5 – 7.5) Lower value is better. AG Boost ADG - 5.6, RFI - 4.2. • 121 total feed days (40 days short of the industry average) Total Daily cost was $4.00/hd That is a savings of $160.00/head premium for conversion. • 93% Choice Grade • 19% YG2 and 81% YG3 According to the Angus Association and CAB, there are premiums paid for yield grades 1 & 2, YG 3 is standard, and YG's 4 & 5 there are discounts. "The discounts are larger for YG 4 & 5, than the premiums for YG 1 & 2." The average paid on our YG 2 carcasses was $11.50 per head. The 3 discounts averaged $78.41 per head. AG Boost Tend - 7, Marb – 5.9, ADG - 5.6, HCW - 5.5, REA - 5. Balanced. • 26% CAB - The CAB Premiums averaged $15.75 per head. CAB assistant director said, "CAB Premium over choice is $17.57/cwt. Premium over choice is absolutely at the heart and soul of our mission statement." Well, the truth is, according to two of the largest packers in the US, the average CAB Premium over choice paid is $15.75/ animal, not cwt, and only paid on an average. • Cost of gain was $1.14 a pound, and this is feed alone. Total cost per head per day was $4.00. This is what kills most cattle, no matter the Yield Grade. There is a fallacy that if a carcass is CAB or Premium, it has made you money. Again false. What do your cows still owe you? -$292/head minimum.

This set of steers faced three large challenges in their lives, one of these alone could have wrecked them and us. Cattle must be developed to face the harshness of the environment. 1. Extreme Pinkeye while grazing in the summer of 2020. 2. The extreme cold weather through the month of February. 3. The extreme increase in corn value while on feed, $8.00/ bu. In the end — Steers sold for an average of $1453.72 Total cost of feeding $529.95 Value of steers at the beginning $1072.00 (if we would have taken this value at weaning, our profit would have been $572.00/calf or $537.68/cow unit)

-$148.23

Savings for -40 days on feed $160.00 Premium over average days on feed $11.77/hd = $517.88 ($11.77 X 44 = $517.88) Even with feed costs that doubled.

Premium for cow efficiency

$634.60

This is in the form of $ not spent, and a larger % calf crop weaned.

Total Profit or loss for the operation $646.37/ Head

16

It takes a lifetime to build a profitable cow herd. If you have chased the fads and have EPD cattle, you aren't going to change their ability in less than ten years of breeding to true consistent genetic value bulls. Where are the true Premiums? Truth of dollars in and out are all we have. The rest is marketing. It must be calculated across the entire operation if you are a cow/calf producer. BALANCE is where the profit is long-term! NOTHING in the cow/calf sector is short-term.

SWEARNGIN ANGUS FEMALE SALE — SEPTEMBER 25, 2021

ACCUMULATIVE GENETIC VALUE

OF THE ENTIRE HERD

We left EPDs and association data 4 years ago, as we had discovered three important truths. 1. They are completely marketing based. 2. They are only generation on generation of unproven data. 3. They are set up for ranking of extremes. We are cattle breeders that make 100% of our living with our cattle. It’s about the cattle here not an unproven scheme. So, we found an independent company, AG Boost, that uses our cattle’s true DNA genetic value. With this we know exactly what is, “Under their Hood”. The system is simple, it’s a 1-10 scale for 15 traits. After four years we have collected enough data to compare our cattle and to see how they are “built to perform.” The pie chart is simple – it is a clockwise trait lineup. Their strongest trait is at the top and moves clockwise. The true key to this system is how balanced our cattle are genetically. Why is this? What makes us unique? We know that cattle that are the most balanced in DNA, Genetic value, perform more consistently throughout their lives and produce offspring that are consistent as well. This is what makes our cattle unique, we isolated genetics over the last 40 plus years and made them work in our environment on forage. This chart is the accumulative value of our entire herd. Our herds number 1 trait is forage efficiency, RFI. Notice how all the traits are from the lowest REA at 4.8, to 7 for meat tenderness. Our genetic range is balanced in the middle. As you look at this sale offering, I hope this helps you see the tremendous consistency of what 40 plus years has created for your opportunity. BALANCE. BALANCE
