THE FOX AND THE PANTHER The fox and the panther have a contest on who is the more beautiful of the two. “Can you show off such fur?” the panther asks the fox. “You are beautiful, but my beauty is not external,” the fox answers, “I’m beautiful too, not in body, but in mind. That’s what I call real beauty. And that certainly makes me more attractive than you.” Moral: People are not to be judged by their appearance.

Animals in danger
More than 550 species of mammals are in danger of extinction. Why do animals become extinct? Often it’s because people destroy their habitat and the food they eat. Sometimes it’s because people hunt them for their fur or their meat. Why are sea animals in danger of extinction as well? Because people pollute the oceans. They throw chemical waste and sewage into the water. Sometimes oil from oil tankers flows into the water. This destroys the animals’ food. Many scientists work for the World Wildlife Fund. They help protect animals in danger of extinction. Mammals: mamíferos To hunt: cazar Fur: pelaje

A New Symbol for Healthy Eating Goodbye, pyramid. Hello, plate. The Food Guide Pyramid is not the model for healthy eating any more. The USDA, a nutrition agency, has a new symbol: a colorful plate with some of the same messages: • Eat a variety of foods. • Eat less of some foods and more of others. The big message is that you should eat more vegetables than fruit and more grains than protein foods. The picture illustrates the ideal portions for each section.

Finally, the plate model does not recommend super-big portions because they can cause weight gain gain.

The Wind and the Sun An Aesop fable
It is a very cold morning. The wind and the sun are arguing over which one is the stronger. They see a man riding his horse and wearing a new coat. “I can easily blow the coat off that man’s back,” the Wind says. “I don’t think you can,” replies the Sun. “Why don’t we have a competition to see who can make him take his coat off?” The wind begins. He blows so hard that he blows off the leaves of all the trees, but the man on the horse just pulls his coat around him to keep himself warm. “It’s my turn now, “says the Sun. Gently, he begins to shine in the sky. As he does so, insects begin to come out and the flowers begin to open. The man on the horse feels hot and he takes off his coat. The moral: power and force are not always the best way to get things done. Aesop: Esopo (escritor griego) Fable: fábula To argue: discutir

I ’ m alert, you ’ re alert Zebras belong to the horse family. They can run up to about 56 kilometers an hour. A group of zebras is called a herd. Within a herd, zebras tend to stay together in smaller family groups. Families are generally made up of a male, several females, and their young. As with horses, male zebras are called stallions, females are mares, and the young are called foals. Zebras live in parts of Africa, in the savannah. They eat grass. They also eat bark and leaves, fruit, and roots. Zebras move constantly to find fresh grass and water. They must protect themselves from lions and hyenas. They stand together with their heads in the opposite direction, fully alert in case lions come. Ask Dexter. .. Can animals talk, and what do they say? Many animals can talk – although not exactly the way we do. We can’t understand most of them. Parrots and a few other animals can make noises that sound like words, but they’re really just mimicking us, and they don’t really understand what they’re saying. How do they talk, then? Lots of animals can‘talk’by making noises that they can understand, even if we can’t. Birds do this when they chirp and sing, cats when they meow and purr, and dolphins when they click and whistle. Many of these noises translate to simple phrases NICE PURR-FECT DAY like ‘I’m hungry’, ‘I’m angry’, ‘feed me’ and ‘leave me alone’. Other animals use signals and sign language to talk to each other. Bees do a complicated dance to tell other bees the direction to find food. Although: aunque Parrots: loros Noises: ruidos
To mimic: imitar To chirp: piar To purr: ronronear
To whistle: silbar Sign language: lenguaje de señas Bees: abejas
