r t a t c a tion y t i c A Search: West Edmonton Mall
Welcome to the
West Edmonton Mall West Edmonton Mall is one of the most important malls in this town. It is a very, very big mall. It is next to the Metropolitan Hospital and in front of the International Academy School. There are 800 different stores: candy stores, bookstores, toy stores. There are also 20 restaurants and a lot of very special attractions, including an artificial lake. Visit Galaxyland Amusement Park. It’s behind the supermarket. There are a lot of great rides. Visit the Deep Sea Area Adventure Park and go on a ride around the lake. It’s in front of the Galaxyland Park. Stay at the Fantasyland Hotel, next to the supermarket. There are 120 different theme rooms. Most children love the African safari rooms.

In cities or little towns, there are many signs that communicate different things. We must pay attention to them.
This sign indicates that we must stop.
This sign indicates that there is a hospital.
These signs indicate the name of the streets.
This sign indicates that there are restrooms for men and women.
Look at the zebra crossing sign on the street. It means that cars must stop and you can cross the street. You must still be very careful. Sometimes, there are cars that do not respect the sign. What other signs can you see in your city? Created by: Publishing team.

The School Day Begins It’s Monday morning at 7:01; You’re still half asleep, your homework’s half done; Your shower’s cold, your cereal’s dry, Your mother forgets to kiss you good-bye. You’re walking to school; it’s only three degrees; Your fingers don’t work, your toes and ears freeze; Your zipper’s stuck, your left sneaker squeaks; Your backpack strap snaps, your soup thermos leaks. You slip on the school steps; you trip in the hall; The toilet floods in the bathroom stall. The gym door’s locked; the library’s the same; The Principal greets you by the wrong name. Your pencils are dull, the sharpener jams; Your fingers get crunched when your desktop slams. Your math partner’s gone, your new neighbor’s rude. Your teacher’s again in a crabby mood. The morning bell rings, it’s 8:01. Come cozy up to the whiteboard, Another school day’s begun. Adapted from: Evans D. School Poems. Two unusual professions Sonia Trujillo is 42 years old; she has four kids and a very unusual job. All across Chile, there are only two female organ grinders. Sonia is one of them. An organ grinder is a person who plays a barrel organ in the streets. One of the things Sonia likes about her job is that nobody gives orders to her. She works only at weekends, and at the times she wants. Sometimes, her kids go with her. Sonia loves her job and she likes to keep the tradition because this one of Chile’s most typical attractions.
Meet Donovan Jones. He is a cowboy, a real cowboy. He rides horses and works with cattle. He wears a kind of uniform. On his head, he wears a cowboy hat that keeps the sun and rain out of his face. He wants his arms free for work, so he wears a vest instead of jackets to stay warm. He also wears gloves, leather chaps to protect his legs from cactus and cattle horns, and boots. An important part of a cowboy’s job is to catch cattle and horses and to keep them together. Created by: Publishing team.

The Old Zoo This is the Old City Zoo. It is very different from the other zoos we know. Old Mac, the kind old zookeeper, lives in a little house next to the zoo. He is very popular. Every day, Old Mac gets up early and feeds the animals. Old Mac never locks the animals up. In the afternoon, Old Mac closes the zoo gates at 6 o’clock and he returns home. Not much happens at this zoo and not many people visit it, but all the animals live happy and extremely lazy lives.

All about gymnastics The word gymnastics comes from gymnos, a Greek word that means naked, because the first Olympian athletes competed without clothes.
Rhythmic gymnastics combines dance, balls, ropes, ribbons, and hoops with gymnastic movements.
Today, this sport consists of many activities that involve body strength, coordination, flexibility, and precision.
Gymnastics is part of the Olympic Games. There are eight events for gymnasts.

Away from school I’m staying home from school today. I’m staying in bed, Pretending that I have a pain That’s pounding in my head. Reasons to wash your hands Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs. It’s easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth. Think about all the foods you eat with your hands! Washing your hands is a simple way to stop germs spreading and making you sick. You only need soap and warm water. When are the best times to wash your hands? • After using the bathroom. • Before eating or touching food. • After blowing your nose or coughing. • After touching pets or other animals. • After playing outside. So, don’t get annoyed when your parents ask you to wash your hands! The United Nations’ Global Hand Washing Day is on 15th October.

The distracted shepherd A Hindu story
One day, Ravi, the distracted shepherd, prepared to take the herd to the barn. Very alarmed, he realized that one little sheep was missing. He looked for hours, until it was late at night. He could not find the Little sheep and began to cry. “Oh, this is terrible! I can’t find my little sheep. Oh! My head aches! I’ve got a terrible headache!” A man coming out of the tavern passed him, looked at him, and said: “Hey, Ravi, why are you wearing a sheep on your head?” Adapted from: Mitos y leyendas de la India. The Chinese dragon 2
Susie loved reading stories. One day, she read a great story about a dragon. “Dragons don’t exist!” laughed her brother Jacob.
The next day, Susie saw an enormous green and red dragon with a long tail. Some people were practicing for Chinese New Year. Susie had an idea.

That night, Susie went into Jacob’s bedroom. “Wake up! There’s a dragon in the forest!” said Susie. What? what? They walked to the forest and stood behind the trees. Suddenly, the dragon appeared. It made terrible noises and it looked angry. Jacob was very frightened.
“Help! Aagh!” Jacob ran back to the house, screaming. Susie and the Chinese dragon people laughed. “Now he believes in dragons! said one of the men. Thanks a lot! And Happy Chinese New Year!” said Susie.

Happy Valentine s Day! Every year on the 14th of February, people exchange gifts, chocolates, cards, and flowers to celebrate Valentine’s Day. There’s a lot of mystery about this day and the saint who gives the name to this celebration. One of the stories says that Valentine was a priest in Roman times. Emperor Claudius II prohibited marriage because he thought that single men could be good soldiers. However, Valentine continued celebrating marriages in secret. When the Emperor discovered him, he sentenced Valentine to death!

Celebrating Independence Day

Hi, Sue. How are you? This week we are celebrating Independence Day. It is the most important celebration in Chile. It’s great, we have two days off! People usually go to the fondas to listen to national music and eat traditional food. We also fly kites this time of the year. This year, my family and I are visiting my grandparents in the country. We arrived last Thursday afternoon. We had tea and then we went to a fonda to celebrate. We played many games and we ate delicious anticuchos and empanadas. My grandpa met some of his friends and we all had a very good time. On Friday, my grandpa and Dad watched the military parade on television. My sister and I flew our kites. I enjoy this celebration a lot. Sometimes it rains, but I love this holiday anyway! What is the most important celebration in your country? How do you celebrate? Write to me Kisses Felipe

Last year, Professor Messit invented an amazing new candy. This is how it happened. “Put the chocolates in the refrigerator,” said Loopy King, Professor Messit’s friend, but Professor Messit didn’t have a refrigerator, so he put the chocolates in the washing machine.
The next day, Professor Messit washed all of his shorts in his washing machine. Oh, dear! They were soon chocolate shorts! “Mmm! Delicious short snacks! I’m going to make short snacks for children,” he said. He put lots of shorts on his car. He put expensive chocolates on the shorts. Then he drove the car to the car wash.

Professor Messit went through the car wash. He was very excited, but when the car came out, he had clean shorts and a chocolate car, but no short snacks. The experiment didn’t work and Professor Messit was very sad.
Professor Messit went home. He was hungry. He ate a piece of the chocolate car. “Mmm, delicious. What a great idea! Who needs a chocolate bar? I just invented the four-wheeled chocolate car!” he said, and he smiled.

y r o t s i The h
of puppets
Nobody knows who created puppets, but we know they existed over 2000 years ago. There are four types of puppet: the glove puppet, the string puppet, the road puppet, and the shadow puppet. The most common puppets are glove puppets and string puppets. Hundreds of years ago, people used puppets to tell educational stories and legends. The Italians invented clown puppets that told comic stories. One of the most famous string puppet stories is Pinocchio. Gepetto was a poor toy maker. Pinocchio was Gepetto’s favorite toy. Pinocchio wanted to become a real boy, but he had one problem: he told lies. Every time he told a lie, Pinocchio’s nose grew longer. Pinocchio had many adventures. Finally, he learned not to tell lies and became a real boy.

A little genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the greatest child stars who ever lived. He began traveling all over Europe playing the piano when he was only 5. Mozart composed a piano sonata before his 5th birthday, and by the time he was 12, he was composing complete operas. One of his famous compositions is Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. He could create wonderful compositions for any category of music –including vocals, concertos, symphonies, operas, and sonatas.

The nable i m o Ab Snowman On November 8, 1851, Eric Shipton and Michael Ward were in the Himalayan Mountains. Suddenly, they saw strange footprints in the snow. The footprints were very large and wide. They were like a man’s footprints, but they only had four toes. Eric Shipton took a photograph of one of the footprints. The people of the Himalayas believed that a strange creature lived up in the mountains. They called it the Abominable Snowman. Eric Shipton’s photograph was the first real clue that the Abominable Snowman lived in the mountains. People who saw him said he was very tall and with hair all over his body. Do you think the Abominable Snowman exists? Footprints: huellas, pisadas. Adapted from: Kniveton J., Llanas A.(2004). The Abominable Snowman. Bounce (Student’s Book 6, p. 32). The mystery of the
pirate’s cave In the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, near Valparaiso, there is a deep cave. People can only see it from the sea.
The legend says that a long time ago, a famous pirate hid a lot of treasure in it. The most famous pirate that visited the coast of Chile was called Francis Drake. When he attacked Valparaíso in 1578, he got a lot of booty. He could not take it in his ship. Carefully, Francis Drake and his sailors walked along the coast looking for a good place to hide the booty. They discovered a cave. It was very difficult to reach it and they thought it was a good place to leave the chest. The years passed but nobody returned to recover the treasure. Nowadays, when the tide goes out, it is possible to see the sea caves. In one of them, the treasure is waiting for the pirates... or for you. Deep: profundo Booty: botín.

The enchanted emerald The rain stopped and Francisco went to play under a large pine tree near his house. When he arrived, he saw a circle of fungi round the tree and a group of small gnomes sitting on them. Very soon, the boy and the gnomes were great friends. When winter came, Francisco’s father needed wood and he decided to cut the pine down. Francisco was worried. The tree was the home of his little friends. The boy wanted to save the pine, so he spent that winter getting wood for the house. When spring arrived, the gnomes heard about Francisco’s sacrifice. They decided to give him a reward. They gave him a gold chain with a large emerald. The stone had magic powers. Very son: muy pronto Wood: leña Reward: recompensa
That summer, a great drought caused great damage. Francisco could not use his magic stone to solve the situation. The enchanted stone could help only him. Francisco ran to the city and sold the stone. He used the money to buy food, clothing, and even grain for the animals. The next day, his neighbors found all the things in front of their doors. There was joy and relief. The gnomes understood that Francisco did not need an enchanted stone to be happy. They gave him another gift. This time they gave him a wooden pin.
