Aquatic Guide
To the Citizens of Copperas Cove, Summer is here and with it comes the Texas heat! On behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department, we would like to invite you to come out and enjoy a splash at either one of our pools. While we are enjoying the Texas summer and the recreational opportunities, which it has brought, our hope is that you will take part in what The City of Copperas Cove has to offer. I encourage you to review this Aquatic Guide and make the most of the season by visiting and staying active at either of our refreshing pools as they start to come alive during this season. Allow me to also take the opportunity to express how hard our staff has worked to bring you the very best aquatic programming this summer. I invite you to call or e-mail me with any thoughts or concerns which you may have. Sincerely,

SWIM LESSON CLASSES • Parent & Child Aquatics Propose: Helps young children become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers. American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics is designed for children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years, and their parents. The purpose of the course is to familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. In addition, Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics provide safety information for parents and teaches techniques they can use to help orient their children to the water.
• Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills
using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, rolling to back, floating for 15 seconds, rolling to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.
• Level 3 - Stroke Development Purpose: Builds on skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice. Participants will learn to: Jump into deep water from the side, dive from kneeling or standing position, submerge and retrieve an object, bob with the head fully submerged, use rotary breathing in horizontal position, perform front and back glide, perform survival float, change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back, perform front and back crawl, butterfly-kick and body motion.
• Level 4 - Stroke Improvement Purpose: Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills.
Purpose: The purpose of the course is to facilitate appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. Participants will learn to: enter water by stepping or jumping from the pool side, exit the water safely using ladder or side, submerge entire head, open eyes underwater to pick up submerged object, float on front and back, perform front and back glide, roll over from front to back and back to front, tread water using arm or leg motions, swim on front and back using combined strokes, swim on side, and move in the water while wearing a life-jacket.
• Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills Purpose: Gives students success with fundamental skills. Participants will learn to: Stepping from the side into chest-deep water. Moving into a front flat for 5 seconds, rolling to back, floating for 5 seconds then recovering to a vertical position. Moving into a back float for 5 seconds, rolling to front then recovering to a vertical position. Pushing off and swimming
COPPERAS COVE
Participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in Level 3 (i.e., front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and with more advanced proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissor kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall.
• Level 5 - Stroke Refinement Purpose: Develops the coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants will refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

No swimming is required in water aerobics, and flotation devices are used frequently. Water exercise helps increase your energy, stamina and strength. Aqua Zumba • Monday, Wednesday 6 PM Those looking to make a splash by adding a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise to their fitness routine. Aqua Tabata • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 7 PM • Friday 9 AM Those looking for an intense workout that’s easy on the joints.
