Tips for a Safer and More Enjoyable Summer at the Pool (StatePoint) Pools are great for play, exercise and therapy. However, it is critical that while enjoying ourselves, we take appropriate safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 275 children nationwide under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools annually, and more than 4,100 children receive medical treatment for pool-related accidents, the majority of which occur in backyard pools. Luckily, building codes and standards can help.

or enable someone to climb over the fence. Keep Safety Devices Nearby: Always keep basic lifesaving equipment handy (pole, rope and personal flotation devices) and know how to use them. These aids should be kept on both sides of the pool and should remain stationary – not be misplaced through play activities.

“Building codes are life savers and as the leading building codes and standards developer, we are accounting for every facet of the home, which includes specific provisions to make pools and spas safer,” says Dominic Sims, CEO of the International Code Council.

Install Alarms Install alarms on all doors and windows to detect unauthorized access from the home into the pool area. You can also install a pool alarm to detect accidental or unauthorized entrance into the water. While the alarm provides an immediate warning, it is not a substitute for the barrier fences, door and window alarms or safety covers.

To drive the importance of water safety home and ensure individuals are having safe pool fun, the Code Council shares the following tips:

Remember Safety Covers Install an approved safety cover on any pool. For the safety of all individuals, do not allow anyone to stand or play on it.

Install Fences and Protective Gates To ensure the pool area is inaccessible to unauthorized swimmers and children when there is no supervisor, install a fence at least 4-feet high around pool and spa areas with a self-closing, selflatching gate or door. Move all chairs, tables, large toys or other objects away from the perimeter that would allow a child to climb up to reach the gate latch

Be Code-Compliant with Drain Covers and Grates To help identify compliance with current standards, all pool and hot tub drains must have a cover or grate marked with the appropriate product marking, including the service life in years and an information label that is provided to the pool owner. Not having a compliant cover could result in some part of a

4 • Home Finder July 2021

swimmer’s body being entrapped in the in the drain – a dangerous situation that could result in injury or drowning. If a cover is broken, missing or noncompliant, the pool should be closed immediately, and a replacement should be performed by pool professionals. Ensure an Existing Pool Has Safe Suction Outlets Pools and spas with a single drain – other than an unblockable outlet – must have a certified blockable suction outlet and one of the following: a safety vacuum release system; a suction-limiting vent system; a gravity drainage system; or other safety features that comply with industry standards. Secure the Proper Permits for a Pool Installation If you’re installing a pool, it will be important to contact your local building department first to determine what permits are needed and what requirements you must follow. “With warm weather here and families spending more time at home, a pool offers hours of fun for everyone,” says Sims. “In addition to adult supervision, safety code compliance helps ensure a safer, more enjoyable pool experience.” For more building safety resources, visit iccsafe.org.

FUEL

SAFETY MONTH

TIPS

to Keep People, Pets and Property Safe (StatePoint) Following the Colonial Pipeline closure earlier this year, many people panicked. “We saw people loading up on fuel using everything from milk jugs to plastic bags. That’s simply dangerous, irresponsible and not worth the risk. Dropping an unreliable container with gasoline could cause an environmental, safety or potential fire situation,” says Dan Marshall with Scepter, a manufacturer of dependable fuel safety containers. The company has been working for years to educate people on fuel safety. During Fuel Safety Month in July, Scepter experts are providing crucial fuel safety tips: AT THE PUMP • Put fuel in the proper container. Universally, red containers are for gasoline, blue are for kerosene, and yellow are for diesel. • Never allow children to operate pumps. Never smoke at the pumps. • Follow proper filling instructions for containers with Flame Mitigation Devices (FMDs). • To refill containers, remove them from your vehicle, turn off the engine and place them on the ground a safe distance away. • Fuel containers can build static electric charge during transport. Touch the container with the gas dispenser nozzle before removing its lid to ground the static electricity charge.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the container when filling to prevent static charge build-up. If a static-caused fire occurs, leave the nozzle in the fill pipe. Immediately move away from the vehicle and notify the station attendant. • Secure containers in your vehicle against tipping and sliding. Never leave them in a trunk or flat bed, or in direct sunlight. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES • Never start or accelerate a bonfire, barbeque or grill with gasoline. • Don’t allow children near fuel containers or running equipment. • Don’t guess. Check the fuel type recommended for lawn and sports equipment. Follow all safety recommendations by the product’s manufacturer. • Never use fuel for killing ant hills, wasp nests and beehives. Use only appropriate pesticides. • Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent or to wash hands. • Choose the right container for outdoor activities. While a Scepter SmartControl container is ideal for family chores, easy to transport Scepter Marine Containers are designed for boating needs. OUTDOOR CHORES • Use fuel only in well-ventilated areas outside where you won’t breathe in fumes. • Don’t smoke when near fuel containers. One spark can cause vapors to ignite. • Never fuel running equipment. If you run out of fuel during a project, let the motor cool before refueling. Fuel

accidentally spilled on a hot surface could ignite and potentially explode. • If a flammable liquid spills, immediately contact your fire department or local authorities for cleaning instructions. Restrict access to the area from children and pets. DISPOSAL • Know your fuel. Winter fuel is heavier, and a unique blend. Fuel available in spring and summer is different and should be used for lawn and sporting equipment. • Dispose of any winter mix of gasoline by funneling it in your car. It will easily mix with the gasoline in your tank. STORAGE • Store fuel containers in a secure, dry location away from furnaces, hot water tanks, potential heat sources, pets and children -- never in vehicles or living spaces. • Inspect existing fuel containers regularly for leaks or cracks. Spot signs of aging? Carefully dispose of the container and purchase a new one. Only purchase fuel containers from trusted brands available from top retailers featuring controllable flow, child safety features and an FMD (which should never be removed or altered). For consumers, Scepter offers rugged Scepter SmartControl fuel containers for gasoline, kerosene and diesel that substantially exceed ASTM and CPSC minimum standards, and include FMDs and child safety locks. Visit scepter.com for more information and safety tips. There are many aspects of handling fuel to know to keep people, pets and property safe. This Fuel Safety Month, brush up on these crucial safety precautions.

Is Your Roof Strong Enough

to Endure Wicked Summer Weather? (StatePoint) The summer months are often accompanied by rough weather that can do a number on a roof if it’s not designed to withstand the elements. Experts say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Beauty: A roof makes up 50 percent of a home’s appearance, so while performance is essential, don’t compromise on aesthetics. Updating a roof can add instant and dramatic curb appeal.

“Having a roof that exceeds code and is made from strong, high-quality products can make all the difference when a big summer storm blows through,” says Scott Lowe, sales manager, ProVia. “You are always better off taking preemptive steps to protect your home and family than making repairs and upgrades in the aftermath of a storm.”

Resale Potential: If you intend to relocate at any point, think about how your roof may factor into a home sale. A beautiful, well-manufactured roof with a transferrable lifetime warranty can be a major selling point.

Here are a few key things to look out for in a roof: Weather Performance: Your roof should meet or exceed third-party testing so you never have to worry about the next bad storm. This includes defense against wind uplift and a barrier system to protect against hail and sheeting rain. Durability: The right roof will retain its structural integrity and appearance for years to come with little maintenance. To that end, be sure your new roof offers UV protection against chalking and weathering, as well as resistance to corrosion, mildew, algae and black streaks. Cost Benefits: While a new roof might seem like a big investment, the right choice can actually help you save money over the long run, with some models offering substantial energy savings and reduced insurance premiums.

Materials: While traditional materials like asphalt, wood shakes and slate can present various issues like shorter life spans, damage concerns, maintenance issues and disposal problems, metal roofing can overcome these obstacles and provide significant advantages. Check out ProVia’s distinctive metal shake and slate roofing panels, which are manufactured with 10 percent more galvanized steel than industry standards, yet are up to three times lighter than asphalt shingles. Available in wood shake and slate styles, the manufacturer’s embossed metal roofing provides distinctive style and naturallooking details in a durable finish. Finally, ProVia metal roof systems are designed to ensure easy installation, and installers are trained and certified to ensure workmanship and maximum roof performance. To learn more, visit provia. com. The decision to re-roof your home is a big one. For easier maintenance and long-term performance through summer storms and all other kinds of extreme weather, be sure you understand all the aspects of the investment.

Modern Kitchen Bath Upgrades

&

(Family Features) Upgrades happen for all kinds of reasons, but one of the most common purposes of a home renovation is to make essential spaces like kitchens and bathrooms more modern. Modernizing your spaces isn’t just about the aesthetic, although that is a major advantage, especially when it comes to resale value. Updating your kitchen and bath is also an opportunity to introduce new technology and enhancements that improve the function of these high-traffic rooms. Modern styles simplify everyday living and can make contemporary entertaining more enjoyable. The sleek lines of modern design lend themselves to a clean look, which is supported by hidden features that make organization easier. SMART TECHNOLOGY Although the idea of a connected home isn’t new, technology is steadily improving. This means smart features are now often more affordable, easily integrated into the rest of your home and available to help manage a wider range of household items. In the kitchen, you can add smart technology in numerous ways, from appliances and climate control to lighting and window treatments. For example, touch-to-open and push-to-open doors

10 • Home Finder July 2021

and drawers create a sleek, modern design while opening and closing with either a push or touch of a button for convenience. Similar diversity is available in the bathroom, where you can incorporate connected health and fitness monitors, touchless toilets, mirrors that double as information centers, towel warmers and even showers that automatically adjust to your preferred temperature. PAINT Changing the colors in a space is one of the most effective ways to transform the decor, but the walls aren’t the only place where paint can make a big impact, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, where the cabinetry can make a bold statement. Black is a hallmark of modern design and installing cabinetry with a black finish can instantly upgrade a room. To create visual interest, consider incorporating accent cabinets in a coordinating finish. For example, you could pair Wellborn Cabinet’s Midtown wall cabinets finished in Matte Ebony with upper center cabinets finished in Putty Oak. An island in Bel-Air can incorporate both dark and light tones for a cohesive look.

DECORATIVE RANGE HOODS An exposed range hood is a trendy look that can add sophistication to your kitchen. Treating this functional element as a statement piece gives you another place to showcase your style and create a sleek and modern look. If your hood is covered, consider making the cabinet door a focal point with a material such as back-painted glass. MULTI-PURPOSE SINKS While your sink has some obvious functions, you can upgrade the space for even more practical use. Some of the latest sink design innovations include built-in features such as cutting boards, colanders, bowls, drying racks and compost areas. In addition, motion activated wastebaskets with separate compost or recycling containers provide hands-free access to reduce unwanted messes. TOUCHLESS FAUCETS Public restrooms aren’t the only places you can benefit from a touchless faucet. At home, the feature may come in handy when your hands are full or filthy. An automatic water flow is convenient and can help keep germs and grime under control. For the most on-trend, modern look, coordinate your faucets with other bathroom elements finished in gold hues, such as a laminate veneer vanity in a high-gloss gold finish. CABINETRY Collectively, cabinets are the biggest component of most kitchens. Since kitchens tend to be the hub of the home, it’s important to maintain a homey feel while adding the luxury of modern features. Using warm colors, gold-toned hardware and sleek door styles can deliver a glamorous yet welcoming design. For example, Wellborn Cabinet’s Aspire Full Access Frameless line features flat moulding and flush lines to create a thoughtfully integrated flow throughout the kitchen. A Morristown door in the Smokey Walnut finish and Serenity metal doors in Sand Gloss Glass marry heirloom quality and contemporary finishes for a beautiful and functional space.

FREE-STANDING TUBS A luxurious soaking tub is a top demand for many homeowners, and trends are moving toward free-standing options that create a focal point in an oasis-like bathroom. You may be envisioning an old-fashioned claw-foot style, but there are numerous modern takes on the traditional version that can fit seamlessly into your modern design scheme. WOOD-LOOK FLOORING Natural wood floors were once the gold standard, but thanks to improvements in the quality and appearance of laminate and vinyl products, you can find alternative flooring in even highend homes. Laminate and vinyl planks give the same look as wood (or stone, if you prefer) to complement a modern aesthetic, usually at a lower price point and with greater durability over time.

“ An automatic water flow is convenient and can help keep germs and grime under control. ”

Get Your Patio Ready for Summer Living

(StatePoint) It’s time to extend your home’s living spaces to the outdoors. To get your patio prepped for a summer of relaxation and fun, consider the following décor ideas and inspiration: The Entryway Your patio will be more enticing if you have beautiful sliding glass patio doors leading to it. If you do go in for this upgrade, it’s important to know that patio doors can be customized in a number of ways that affect their look and function. Exterior Decorating Boost comfort and ambiance by applying the same attention to detail when decorating your patio as you would indoors. Beyond furniture that’s comfortable enough to lounge on all day or evening, incorporate throws, pillows and even rugs. Add splashes of color and vibrancy by hanging outdoor wall art, or, if you’re feeling extra creative, painting a mural. Paper lanterns hung above your patio dining area can bring a touch of romance to meals enjoyed outdoors. And get inspired by the nature around you by ensuring your patio features greenery. Potted and hanging plants or even ivy, jasmine or roses grown against a wall or all good choices. Beauty Inspired by Nature These days, manufactured stone is not just for the side of your home. The possibilities for using it in and around

the patio are endless. Add drama to a boundary wall between the patio and yard; beautify your outdoor kitchen’s grill unit, pizza oven, table or island; and enhance seating around the fire pit or fireplace and the bases of pergolas or columns. Just be sure to select products that look like authentic stone even upon careful inspection, and are designed to withstand the elements. For example, the choices available from ProVia are artfully crafted to produce a realistic, dramatic effect, mimicking stones from unique geographic regions in a range of cuts. Unlike other options on the market, their colors permeate throughout the entire stone, giving every manufactured stone a realistic look with hues that last for years. To learn more, visit provia.com/ stone. With a few stylish upgrades, you can get your patio in tip top shape for summer.

Basic tips for feeding wild birds

(Family Features) With all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards - nature, in particular - for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Despite the worldwide crisis, nature’s normalcy remained intact; flowers continued to bloom, bees continued to pollinate and birds continued to fly and forage food. Feeding birds can be enjoyable for any age group and provide stress relief for all who partake. A University of Exeter study, focused on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found

16 • Home Finder July 2021

lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw during afternoons at home. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds - quantity not “quality” - the study found. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus.

Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home. Interest in birding isn’t slowing down. If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start. The experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products Co. offer these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard.

DOES BIRDSEED GO BAD? It is important to remember that all birdseed is perishable. Be sure and store any open product in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the seed from drying out and little critters from finding it.

FEEDERS A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. An option like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to food and protect it from rain. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with stateof-the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quickclean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Just push a button and the bottom of the feeder pops off for easy access to the inside. Rinse the feeder with soapy water, dunk it into a water-bleach solution at a concentration of 9-to-1, rinse, dry and reattach the bottom. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease. POPULAR FOODS Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. Allnatural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all-natural

black oil sunflower and Cole’s “Hot Meats” (sunflower meats infused with habanero chili peppers that birds love and squirrels dislike). Or an option like Special Feeder blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Offering a wide variety, Cole’s feed is researched and specifically formulated to attract certain bird species, the largest number of birds and the greatest variety of birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a highenergy treat. Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. For more information on attracting birds to your backyard, visit coleswildbird.com.

DO BIRDS NEED VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS TO SURVIVE? Most wild birds eat from a wide variety of food sources (insects, berries, seeds, etc.) which guarantees they get all the vitamins and minerals they need naturally. As long as your birdseed is fresh and high quality, your feathered friends are sure to thrive. MY BIRDS HAVE STOPPED COMING TO THE FEEDER. WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? This could be the result of a few different things: Time of year – it is very common for feeder visits to significantly decrease in the fall. Why? Because by the end of summer and beginning of fall, plant berries are in full bloom and insects are very abundant. Change of Feeder - It is not uncommon for birds to become confused if you change your birdseed or feeder. It could take a few days up to a couple of weeks (no lie!) for the birds to recognize the new seed or feeder as a viable food source. New Area Predator - Young hawks are constantly moving into new territories and just maybe one found your little outdoor bird café to be something akin to a fast food diner. While he’s around, your once abundant friends are likely to stay hidden away until he moves on to greener pastures. Same goes for nearby outdoor cats as well. (SOURCE: coleswildbird.com)

(StatePoint) Never underestimate the power of scent. When you first open that dryer door or pull a warm, freshly laundered shirt over your head, you feel good, confident, clean and ready to face the day. You might not consciously think it, but you feel it. But in summer, long days outdoors result in frequent clothing changes and towel usage, creating “loads” more smelly laundry than usual. Wondering how to make your favorite clothes stay bright and last longer? Want those sheets smelling great for guests long after they’re laundered? Here are some of the best tips from Ensueño laundry care experts: • Prep your clothes. Separating colors is a no-brainer, but be sure to secure clothing as well. Zip zippers, attach Velcro and fasten snaps to avoid snags and hang-ups that can ruin clothing. Check all pockets too—many cell phones and important papers have found a watery grave when accidentally run through the wash. • Choose a scent. A survey by Ensueño found 63 percent of detergent users prefer a great scent. For a pick-me-up every time you dress or dry off, find a long-lasting one you love. For an extra scent lift, choose brands that use the same aroma across all of their products — like Ensueño, which just launched its liquid detergent and Scent Booster dryer sheets in the same great scents (spring fresh and violet bouquet) as their popular fabric softener. By using

the same scent from start to finish, you’ll give your laundry a long-lasting boost of freshness and avoid cocktailing scents that can compete. • Adjust your water temperature. Use the right water temperature for the soil level and the type of garments you’re washing. Use hot water to remove germs and heavy soil (though some fabrics are too delicate for hot and can bleed, so check the label carefully), warm water for good cleaning action without much wrinkling or fading, and cold water for delicate items or bright colors that might run or fade, dulling your whites. • Choose the right detergent. Powders sometimes fail to dissolve in cooler water temperatures and pods can get really expensive. The new Ensueño Liquid Detergent deep cleans and delivers stain-fighting power and color-fading protection so you smell fresh, you look fresh and you feel fresh — a trifecta of laundered confidence.

• Boost softness. Use fabric softeners and dryer sheets to cut laundry time and make your laundry irresistibly soft and great-smelling. Fabric softeners also help keep clothes wrinkle- and staticfree and help protect your clothing from wear and tear, lengthening garment life. Ensueño’s long-lasting fragrances are inspired by nature and their plantbased softening agents lock that freshfrom-the-wash aroma into every fiber of clothing for weeks. Ensueño products can be found at favorite retailers including Walmart, Sam’s Club and Family Dollar. The summer can be the trickiest time of year to keep garments looking and smelling their best. With a few smart strategies, you can ensure clothes stay bright and fresh all season.

LAUNCH YOUR BOAT INTO A NEW SEASON

(Family Features) Whether you’re racing against the waves or quietly floating with a pole in hand, a day on the water is hard to beat. However, before you can enjoy the excitement of a new season, there are several steps you need to take to make sure your boat is ready for the ride.

22 • Home Finder July 2021

SYSTEM CHECK Your boat’s fuel and electric systems need an experienced eye to determine potential problems. Cracked or damaged hoses and connections need to be replaced, and all fittings and clamps should be checked to ensure they’re tight and secure. Test exhaust and ventilation systems, and replace worn or lose belts and cables, giving special attention to the steering and throttle cables. If you didn’t change the oil and filter before putting your boat in storage, do so before the season begins. Also be sure to check oil, power steering fluid and coolant levels as well as running lights and emergency features such as horns. BATTERY FUNCTION A reliable power source is essential for powering your trolling motor and operating accessories like fish finders when your engine isn’t running. You’ll need to test your battery before heading out on the water. If it’s time for a replacement, look for a powerful and cost-efficient option like Interstate Batteries’ Enhanced Flooded Deep-Cycle Marine Battery. The battery features a durable design with extended battery life and includes a two-year, free replacement warranty. VISUAL INSPECTION After several months in storage, it’s a good idea to give your boat a thorough inspection so you can identify any

holes, cracks or dings that may impact its performance or safety. Scan the hull closely to for any abnormalities and check the propeller, as even minor dings and scratches can affect its operation. CAREFUL CLEANING Depending on the security of your storage space and how you covered your boat, you may not have much heavy cleaning to do. However, it’s a good idea to start the season fresh by giving everything a thorough wipe down. This can help illuminate any problems you may have overlooked during your visual inspection. In addition, using UV protectant on exposed surfaces can help prevent damage such as cracks and fading caused by harsh sunlight. SAFETY SUPPLIES Before you hitch the trailer, take inventory of your on-board safety supplies. Be sure your life jackets are in good condition and that you have options to appropriately fit all passengers. Check fire extinguishers to ensure they’re in good working order and test the carbon monoxide detector (or add one if there’s not already a detector installed). Also scan your safety kit; update any expired items and replenish your supply of bandages or other items that may be running low. Home Upgrades to Improve Indoor Air

Quality

(Family Features) When most people think about air quality, they’re typically thinking about outdoor pollution. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air inside your home can be as polluted, or even more so, than the air outside. The concentrations of some indoor pollutants can be as much as 2-5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations. The air inside your home also contains pollutants from everyday activities like cooking, bathing and cleaning. A family of four can produce the equivalent of 22-30 pounds of moisture per day from normal activities, according to the Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers, while household cleaners and products like paint, upholstery, carpeting and plastics can release chemicals containing volatile organic compounds. On average, Americans spend an estimated 90% of their time indoors, according to the EPA. All that time with minimal access to daylight and fresh air can take a toll on your health. These steps for managing indoor air quality can help you create a healthier home. Support your HVAC system Many homeowners assume their heating and cooling (HVAC) system is adequate to manage their home’s indoor air quality. Typically, these systems only circulate existing indoor air, so you’re missing out on the benefits of circulating fresher, cleaner air. What’s more, without regular servicing and frequent filter replacements, it’s easy for standard HVAC systems to fall short. This is especially true in older homes or in households where there’s a high volume of allergens like dust or pet dander. Adding standalone or integrated devices can help give your HVAC system some extra support. Air purifiers can effectively help filter pollutants while ultraviolet lights purify

the air and help control pollutants like bacteria, mold and mildew. Improve fresh air ventilation When it comes to upgrades that improve air quality, better fresh air ventilation is near the top of the list for many homeowners. Improved ventilation allows you to clear out stale, polluted indoor air and circulate fresh, outdoor air in your home. Polluted air tends to stagnate at the ceiling, so one effective and energyefficient way to create natural ventilation is with skylights that open. Sometimes called venting or operable skylights, when you open skylights in combination with vertical windows, you create natural airflow that can help release indoor air

pollutants and bring in fresh, clean air to keep your home healthy and pleasant. This concept is known as the chimney effect. Warm air naturally rises and escapes from open skylights while fresh air is drawn inside through the windows. This practice can reduce your reliance on air conditioning, improving your home’s overall efficiency and keeping a lid on cooling costs. Today’s skylights can also be automated to open and close at regular intervals or extend and retract shades to block light as needed. Many models, including those from Velux, can even connect to a smartphone app to combine convenience with a soothing mood booster that supports health and wellness.

Keep up with cleaning Textiles like carpeting, rugs and window treatments can harbor a great deal of dust and dander that reduces air quality. It’s important to regularly clean and air out these decorative fabrics and surfaces, especially thick carpet that is likely to host dust mites and bacteria. Remember air quality while you’re cleaning, too, and opt for cleaning products with fewer chemicals. When possible, use microfiber cloths and natural materials like white vinegar and soap flakes. With proper upgrades, adjustments and care, you can enjoy a home filled with fresh, healthy air and comfortable surroundings year-round. Learn more at whyskylights.com.

ARE YOU GROWING

THE RIGHT TYPE OF GRASS?

(StatePoint) Choosing the right type of grass optimizes the chances that your lawn will be healthy, beautiful and easy to maintain. However, experts say that there are many factors to consider.

“You may have your heart set on a specific type of grass because of where you grew up or because the Joneses down the street have a beautiful lawn and they grow XYZ grass. But what’s best for your lawn depends on where you live now and your growing conditions,” says landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga. A free video series from Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, can help you master your lawn. In a recent Exmark Original video, “Done In A Weekend, Grass 101,” Scott discusses the various benefits, maintenance needs and other considerations of each grass type. Here he shares some top factors to keep in mind: • Climate: Grasses are typically divided into two temperature categories: warmseason and cool-season. Warm-season grasses grow best in hot, southern climates reaching 80 to 95 degrees, and go dormant when temperatures consistently drop below 65 degrees. Species like Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia

28 • Home Finder July 2021

and Centipede all grow best in hot, humid regions, whereas Bermuda grass grows best in hot, arid areas. On the other side of things are cool-season grasses, which grow best in northern regions where temperatures fall between 60-70 degrees. Species include tall and fine Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and annual and perennial Ryegrass. Living in the middle, in what’s known as the “Transitional Zone” can be both a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, you may have more grass choices, but on the downside, cool-season grasses may look worn-out by late summer, and warm-season grasses will be dormant longer. • Sun and Shade: While there are exceptions, warm-season grasses generally grow best in full sun areas getting 8 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, and cool-season grasses grow best in moderate or medium shade areas getting between 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. You may notice that no one talks about “full shade” -- areas getting less than 4 hours of sunlight daily -- when discussing grass. That’s because there’s no grass that thrives in these conditions

• Water: Different types of grass need different amounts of water to thrive. Warm-season grasses tend to be more drought-tolerant and require less water. • Use: Heavy-turf grass like Zoysia or Bermuda stand up to activity best, whereas cool-season grasses typically don’t do well in high-traffic areas where children play or dogs run. • Maintenance: What’s required to maintain a healthy lawn also deserves consideration. In general, cool-season grasses cost less to install but more to maintain. Because they don’t form that dense carpet-like structure that heatloving grasses do, cool-season grasses need to be watered and tended more. For more tips, visit Exmark.com/Backyard. Exmark’s Backyard Life is a multimedia destination focused on helping homeowners make the most of their backyard. While visiting the site, you can also access other Exmark Original Series, including “Done-In-A-Weekend Projects”, “Prime Cuts” and “Dream Yards” videos. By understanding your property’s growing conditions and a bit about grass types, you’ll be well-positioned to select the best grass for your needs and lifestyle.
