P R O G R A M 3 single-story, 25-foot ‘eyesore’ storefronts are replaced with a museum, anchoring a burgeoning arts district • a copper-clad jewel box form and a false facade of blue glazed brick create a strong sense of place and signify indoor / outdoor community spaces • collection spaces overlap and wrap around the interior garden while the roof deck provides a new perspective on main street

M A D R A S fall 2014 named after a dynamic yet systematic textile, madras combines convention with innovation • a mix of uses brings much-needed weekday activity to the river market district of kansas city, missouri

C O N T E X T highways on 3 sides of the city’s historic center press it against the river which gave the city life • when combined with the highly variable midcontinental climate, the canyonlike divide between the river market district and today’s financial district precludes pedestrian flow between the areas • the city market attracts crowds from outside the district, but essentially reduces the district to a weekend parking lot • redevelopment efforts have increased residential and commercial square footage in recent years google

C O N C E P T madras serves as a ‘beautiful backdrop’ for increased street activity • an l-shape form type hugs the streetfront edge to maximize infill impact • a widened, sheltered path addresses the steep incline and heavy pedestrian / vehicle flow along the northern edge • a corner lobby controls entry for both residents and employees • a skin of bronzecolored, insulated metal panel respects the district’s palette while introducing a modern finish • the rhythmic use of simple forms complements surrounding buildings • the weekday occupants patronize district shops and restaurants, all within walking distance
