URBAN SLICE PORTFOLIO OF KECHENG HUANG APPLY FOR HACKATHON COOPER 2019 AT COOPER UNION, NEW YORK
CONTENTS
PROLOGUE As an intern with Kengo Kuma & Associates, I was fortunate enough to be involved in investigations into the complex layers of Tokyo. The design team and I immersed ourselves in urban research on behalf of a project to restore a temple. collected historical pre-WWII building data throughout Tokyo, and compared this layer to the contemporary postwar city. The site was one element in a web of other historic structures, and so our work helped underscore a broader need to reconnect the city to its lost history. This analysis helped clarify the project and the city for me, illuminating one layer of Tokyo at a complex scale. To me, the effort enriched the temple and made it more meaningful to the city. I was inspired. Through the layering of information, we were able to address urban complexity and make it less overwhelming. Inspired by this, I generated my idea of recognizing and addressing urban complexity, “LAYERING”, which means simplify and interpreting the intricate and deceitful information from the context into more discernable and manageable“URBAN SCLICES”. And after dealing with these“SLICES (LAYERS)” separately, they will be “RE-LAYERED” again into one systematic entity that functions better. I adopt it as the main idea to be demonstrated in my portfolio.

2018 Spring Core Studio --- Urban Rennovation Core Studio Focusing On The Urbanization In Shenzhen Instructor: Kuang-Chein Bee, Sirun Hu Site: Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China Individual Work Distinction in Core Studio 2018 Spring In the 1980s, a large influx of capital and population flooded Shenzhen, making urban density rapidly increase. So in the downtown area of Shenzhen, there are many urban villages that do not match the texture of the surrounding high-tech city. Gangxia Village is one of them. There is a large pool of laborers from other cities, where they live in crowds. They face the problem of lack of education and medical resources, and they lack the social ladder to climb up. Commuters have to live in distant suburbs for cheap rents, spending hours on the way to work every day. This design hopes to improve the accommodation conditions of Gangxia Village through the flexible use of the housing property rights of Gangxia. And the system of low-rent housing is set up above, introducing new population and educational, medical and commercial resources to improve social inequality here.
THE LOCATION OF GANGXIA VILLAGE
ANALYSIS OF THE SITE AND THE CONTEXT
Residents of Gangxia Village face various challenges and crises that seriously affect their quality of life. In addition to the difficulties in physical conditions, the lack of communication.

HISTORICAL SUPERIMPOSITION Historical Theme Cultural Center of Harbin 2017 Fall Core Studio --- Culture Center Core Studio Focusing on The Interpretation of Culture Instructor: Kuang-Chein Bee Site: Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China Individual Work Distinction in Core Studio 2017 Fall
Understanding the history of a city is the key to truly understanding the city, especially for a city with a complex historical background like Harbin. Harbin has been occupied by Manchurians, Russians, and Japanese in history, and finally entered the stage of socialism. Every period of history has a completely different social outlook. Traditional historical values use a mainstream approach to understanding history. But a more objective and fair attitude is to affirm the development of the various periods of time to promote the history of the city. This design hopes to use the historical relics of various periods in Harbin as a clue to sum up the history of each period into different levels and become a monument to the history of Harbin.

SUPERIMPOSITION DIAGRAM I collected the relics scattered in Harbin. And they are classified into several levels according to the order of the times of construction. The historical stages of each level correspond to a layer of museums in the building. I connected the ruins of each level with lines. The portion of these lines that pass through the field becomes the basis for the cutting plane.

GROUND FLOOR SERVES AS PUBLIC PLAZA Public space is scarce in the city, so a layer of the cultural center of the building can be designed as part of the public square of the city. By opening a floor to the city, the network of plazas near the site is connected to provide an event venue for residents of Harbin. As a result, citizens will come here often to increase the frequency of use of the entire building. And the new and old buildings are functionally connected, which makes the cultural center more historically commemorative.

ANALYSIS OF MUSEUM PLANS The museums on each floor correspond to different eras. According to different characteristics of the times, I have designed completely different planar forms. The dramatic changes in each layer of space are used to commemorate the completely different cultural landscapes that different forces have shown in ruling this area.

WEAVING WATER HYBRIDS Urban Design of Hanyang Iron Plants 2018 Spring Core Studio --- Urban Design Focusing On The Urbanization In Shenzhen Instructor: Kuang-Chein Bee, Yan Yuan Site: Wuhan, Hubei Province, China Contribution: All Collaborator: Peng Ouyang, Cai Distinction in 2018 Urban Design Core Studios
Many cities are now suffering from waterlogging phenomenon in the world. Though easily forgotten and often misunderstood, the infrastructures of water treatment are inextricably linked with the pulse of our modern cities. Invisible Works is a public introduction to the dynamic life of wastewater treatment in Wuhan. It is also a chance for people to engage in the active nature of treatment and simultaneously uncover its mysteries through experience. The intent is to transform the water collecting, water treatment system from a marginalized system into a place that all can enjoy, acknowledging its importance as part of the public realm.
The Waterlogging Phenomena in Wuhan are mainly caused by the unrestricted development in the downtown area. The isolated water and greenland areas were once linked to the Yangtz River Aquatic System and there still remains a similarity in the composition of the eco-system. So we try to re-connect them after a detailed investigation and reasoning.

INPROVE ENVIRONMENT FOR RESIDENTS Through rainwater garden, green terrace, porous paving, bio-swale, rain water pipe and other vertical settings, rainwater is effectively collected to the retention pond. After collection and plant filtration, rainwater could flow to next step of purification and the outlet filtered water will be source of water features and irrigation. Using terrain and platform design, water would return to retention pond and forms a complete recycling circle. The outline and form of retention pond is modified for better organization of activities. There are four main channels on the site, they connect Moshui Lake and the Hanjiang RiverďźŒand the four channels strech into every surrounding communities and help create the spirite of site.
CATOGORIES OF HYBRIDS Six prototypes of complex are created and applyed into this site. These prototypes are all shaped into circles, for the reason that this gyometrical figure does not create any sense of direction and attract people from all directions. Each circle is a complex composed of three function on average. The six complexes function together to weave the seperated parts of the site. 澵濤濕濦濨濡濙濢濨

IMPLOSION: A DOUBLE-LAYER METAPHOR The Liberty Dilemma in the Informational Era 2017 Fall High-rise building Design Studio 2017 EVOLO Skyscraper Competition Focusing on the research of Informational Age Instructor: Kuang-Chein Bee, Sirun Hu Individual Work With the rapid development of post-industrial societies, more and more land has been gradually eroded by severe urbanization. The question of improving the operational efficiency of cities and restraining urbanization has become an urgent issue to be dealt with. In this design, a demonstration of the prophecy, mainly employing topological and semiotic techniques, with the aim of further discussing the solution of this social problem from the perspective of media evolution is proposed, in which the opportunity to solve the evolutionary interaction between the electrification media and the social cooperation system will be explored. This project is the interpretation of the new era.
DESIGNING BACKGROUND
PROTOTYPE OF THE MASS PLAN
In this design, a demonstration of the prophecy, mainly employing topological and semiotic techniques, with the aim of further discussing the solution of this social problem from the perspective of media evolution is proposed, in which the opportunity to solve the evolutionary interaction between the electrification media and the social cooperation system will be explored.
To place the complicated production process in the buildings and to make this system functioning more effectively, we develope a new prototype of the mass plan which integrates design&production system, shool&exhibition system, sightseeing&commercial system and circulation system for both goods and
THE IMPACT OF MEDIA As Marshall McLuhan said in Understanding Media:The Extensions of Man, “Electricity reverses explosion into implosion”, human society will go through an unprecedented reversal, namely “implosion”, thanks to the electrooptic flint-like development. High-definition hot medium continues to advance, such as 3D printing, VR technology, internet remote collaboration and so on, in place of the low-resolution cold media of typography. The progress of media itself, will greatly improve the efficiency of information exchange, with cost going down.
ELEMENTS IN THE MASS PLAN
SECTION SEQUENCE The inter-personal production collaboration replacing the large-scale production line in the printing era of division of labor cooperation system, the general collapse of factories and rise of individual production, the city moving from the horizontal expansion tendency into vertical shrinkage, even the disappearance of concepts as ethnic, national, re-tribalization as city-state or community occur in the meantime.
SECTION OF THE TOWER People working in each level are no longer a simple part of the labor division in traditional societies; instead, they work as a variety of production roles by effectively collaborating in the extended high-level plane and breaking the barriers among professions. Each production floor develops in the same growth modulus, but its product’s features, aesthetic guidance will be diversified. The relative isolation between floors and hybrid recombination create a more diverse human society, coinciding with biological point of view.

OTHERWORK This section shows my interests and attempts in parametric design and construction, calligraphy, photography, mapping, and 3D printing. For me, the parametric design is still in the initial stage of trying, but in the cooperation of several times and seniors, I deeply felt the power of parametric design, and the unpredictable trend of future development. In calligraphy, photography, and painting, I have cultivated my interest from childhood to painting. Through longterm contacts, I gradually cultivated my own aesthetic ideas and constantly incorporated into the practice of design. In calligraphy, photography, and painting, I have cultivated my interest from childhood to painting. 2018 Digitalfuture Workshop in Tongji University [ ARCHITECTURE MEASURING WORK ] The workshop "Programing Material Intelligence" explores how advances in computational design and robotic fabrication can be used to design large parts with new types of autonomous, shape-changing behaviors. Material programing denotes a method of design in which functions such as movement can be encoded in the physical material and fabrication logic in place of electronics and digital control.
[ ARCHITECTURE MEASURING WORK Following this methodology, climate actuated behaviors were designed and encoded into macro sacale parts using additive manufactruring and an integrated combination of natural and synthetic materials. A computational design workflow developed by ICD was tested to explore new multi-performance and material level tectonics. Our group iteratively designed and 3D printed parts with shape-changing behaviors based on variable stiffness and actuator integration to create a digital and physical catalogue. A set of designs were prototyped at full scale using robotic controlled FDM 3D printing and integrated wood actuators.
