Whichever horse wins the 2020 running of the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, will be a direct descendent, through their male line, to ECLIPSE, foaled in 1764. Perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, and after whom the race is named, he raced a total of 18 times resulting in a victory on each occasion. He was already a 5-y-o when he contested his first race at Epsom Downs in 1769 and with no horse able to compete with him, he was retired to stud after just three seasons.

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE HAS TRAINED SIX WINNERS OF THE RACE The Coral-Eclipse has a rich history, with some of racing’s greats landing the spoils to cement their place in racing folklore. Vincent O’Brien’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Sadler’s Wells was the only three-year-old in a nine-runner field for the 1984 renewal of the Coral-Eclipse. He was sent into the lead on the turn for home and showed a willing attitude in the closing stages to hold off the pursuit of the filly Time Charter and win by a neck. He would go on to become one of the greatest stallions of the modern era siring the likes of Galileo, Montjeu and High Chaparral. Regarded by many as the most unlucky Derby runner-up in the history of the race, Dancing Brave showed just how good he was when defeating two top-class rivals in Triptych and Teleprompter in 1986. He stretched clear in the closing stages in the hands of Greville Starkey to win by four lengths at the line. He subsequently went on to win the King George at Ascot before sprinting down the outside to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. The ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway produced one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the Coral-Eclipse when getting the better of Sir Michael Stoute’s Kalanisi in 2000. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old was headed inside the final furlong but rallied gamely under George Duffield to get back up on the line and win by a head. A winner of no less than six Group 1s, he was never out of the first two in thirteen starts. One of only a few horses to complete The Derby – CoralEclipse double in the same season and but for being beaten on his racecourse debut as a two-year-old, Sea The Stars would have retired unbeaten. He was sent off the 4/7 favourite here at Sandown Park in 2009 but had to work hard for his success as he was challenged by Aidan O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle inside the final furlong. The pair drew well clear of the third and John Oxx’s colt found a little extra close home to win with a length to spare.

The stand-out colt of his generation, Golden Horn’s three-year-old campaign saw him win no less than four Group 1’s including The Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and of course the Coral-Eclipse here at Sandown Park in 2015. Frankie Dettori jumped off in front on The Derby winner here and he managed to control the race from there. The Grey Gatsby looked a serious danger as he loomed alongside the three-year-old on the turn for home, but he picked up impressively once Frankie shook him up and he ran on strongly to the line to win by three and a half lengths. The brilliant mare Enable marked her racecourse comeback with a bang in this race last year, enhancing her illustrious record of Group 1 victories. The third mare to win the race, she was hard-pressed by the talented Magical and was made to work for her win, albeit over a trip shorter than ideal. Can the exceptional mare make it back-to-back wins in the race?

Relatively lightly-raced, he was well behind Enable in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last year but may have taken a step forward since.

GALILEO (IRE) - SHASTYE (IRE) Ridden by RYAN MOORE Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN His close third in the Derby last year was backed up by wins at Royal Ascot and in the Juddmonte International at York, before he ran a respectable race in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, finishing fourth. His win in the Juddmonte International appeals as very strong form (beating Crystal Ocean), and he should improve from last time.

INTELLO (GER) - REGAL REALM Ridden by JIM CROWLEY Trained by SIR MICHAEL STOUTE Third in this race last year, he ran a good race in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, his first run since being gelded. He’s shown an effectiveness round this track and is just the type that his trainer excels with. The ground today should be more suitable for him than last time at Ascot.

HARBINGER - REIZEND (JPN) Ridden by OISIN MURPHY Trained by MITSURU HASHIDA This Japanese mare landed a big success in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood last year, and she has put in some admirably consistent performances since. Three lengths off Magical in both the Irish and British Champion Stakes, she couldn’t land the odds in a valuable race over in Saudi Arabia last time but is a mare with plenty of talent.



NATHANIEL (IRE) - CONCENTRIC Ridden by FRANKIE DETTORI Trained by JOHN GOSDEN The best racehorse in the world (on official rankings), this brilliant mare has a remarkable 10 Group 1’s to her name, including two renewals of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. A generational talent, she wasn’t fully fit when beating Magical on her comeback last year and she faces a worthy competitor again this year.

ENABLE’s unbeaten run at the highest level was ended in last year’s Arc but she lost little in defeat and this outstanding mare is fancied to mow down the front-running Ghaiyyath. Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.

Parade Ring Access

In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Coral-Eclipse Raceday 2020 - Taking Place Safely Behind Closed Doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending Sandown Park Racecourse will be required to travel directly to and from the fixture, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance on Coral-Eclipse raceday is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse , jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media and Owners. All attendees on Coral-Eclipse raceday will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19 2 - An online health questionnaire - completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival to the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of the virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times.
