HYDRO ALUMINIUM EXTRUSION

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO EXPLOIT THE DESIRABLE PROPERTIES OF THE THIRD MOST ABUNDANT ELEMENT IN THE EARTH’S CRUST

RE-FRAMED BRIEF: To exploit Aluminium’s superior properties into a technically and commercially viable product, through the extrusion process, to be used by (but not limited to in its future life) the equestrian market in both every day and competition settings.

DESIGNING A LIGHTWEIGHT, MODULAR PRODUCT TO SLOT INTO A HECTIC LIFESTYLE.

• All age ranges and generations.

With around 1m horses, the sector has a gross output of £4.3bn a year and is the second-largest rural employer after agriculture

The UK equine industry contributes £8bn a year to the economy.

Payloads on horse boxes range from 750-1100kg, often leading to risks of penalties for being overweight.

There are multiple different National societies and associations such as The Pony Club, British Show jumping, British Eventing and Horse racing.

IDEATION AND EXPLORATION

KEY REQUIREMENTS

USED ON NEXT ASSY

• Must be an innovative use of extrusion conforming to Hydro’s dimension and material limitations.

APPLICATION

• Must avoid hollow areas where possible to allow for a cheaper die.

SOLIDWORKS

• Must avoid inconsistent wall thickness without good reasoning.

Starting with a stool consisting of 3 panels and 4 core extrusions.

Pull the rubber end caps off and slide the panels out.

FINAL DESIGN OUTCOME

THE 3-IN-1 STARTER PACK WITH INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

• A simple 3 part design consisting of two extrusions and additional Hydro branded end caps.

• Transforms from a seat to a step and then to a saddle rack to aid with all scenarios faced by equestrians at competitions or day to day.

• Simply slots together for efficient assembly, disassembly and storage.

DESIGN INNOVATION PLASTICS

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO EXPLOIT PLASTIC’S VERSATILE PROPERTIES FOR THE SANITARY PROTECTION PRODUCT SECTOR.

RE-FRAMED BRIEF: Design a reusable tampon applicator to reduce embarrassment and stigma surrounding menstruation, provide a more luxury, enjoyable experience for the user and dramatically decrease consumption of single use plastics within the sector.

Must be a reusable sanitary product which is not already a populated market and will aid a major reduction in single use plastics.

Must be able to be manufactured from medical grade plastic for sanitary reasons.

Must be able to store a tampon prior to use so that it can be pre loaded before leaving the house and ready to use on

Tapered head

Dome-tipped applicator body for comfortable insertion with longer slits than an average tampon applicator for multiple sized tampon capabilities.

Gold chrome branding/personalisation

Gold foil/vinyl branding with optional personalisation regarding colour choice and addition of initials for a more luxury, personal experience.

User interaction

Ability to store one tampon before loading and using the applicator for those who are on the go. The lipstick sized applicator fits all sizes of tampons from lite to super plus, and can slip discretely into a handbag or pocket.

• Injection moulded PC+PET (Impact Modified) +3% Saniconcentrate applicator.

• Opaque in colour with capabilities for recycling at end of life.

• Lasts for 1000’s of uses to combat the current, largely ignored problem with single use plastic waste produced from disposable applicators.

• 3% Saniconcentrate additive for natural sterilising properties along with mould and bad odour preventatives.

• M18x1.5 thread on plunger and screw cap to allow for storage of a tampon prior to use.

MARKETING AND PRODUCT PROMOTION.

ADVERTISEMENT, PRICING AND PACKAGING

• Main sources of advertisement include social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to target all generations. Targeting these two hotspots will greatly increase brand and product recognition.

• In line with brands with a similar message such as Hey Girls and Hey Estrid (a razor brand), this product would have multiple buying options and the option to personalise the product for a more luxury feel through colours and adding initials.

• Packaging would consist of simply a well branded, feminine box which would be an appropriate size to slip through a letterbox each month. The packaging would be 100% recyclable as its purpose is purely for postage of the product and will be disposed of as soon as the product is in use.

ADPTABRACE

SCOLIOSIS IS A CONDITION WHICH AFFECTS 3 IN 1000 CHILDREN IN REGARDS TO MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH.

RE-FRAMED BRIEF: To design a scoliosis back brace for adolescents that decreases lead times, improves mental health and adjusts with the growing child.

USER AND MARKET DIRECTION

USER PERSONA

• Jessica Miller is a 10 year old girl who struggles with scoliosis, she looks up to her parents and wants to feel like a normal child when playing with her friends. She struggles with anxiety and worries about how she looks.

50% of children do not wear their brace for as long as they should.

13 hours of wear per day is enough to stop the spine from curving further, requiring less work during surgery.

9 out of 10 with scoliosis experience bullying, with 2/3 being on a regular basis.

8 in 10 cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown.

IDEATION AND CONSIDERATIONS

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

Self lacing technology.

Smart reactive gel material which softens and hardens as required.

Temperature sensitive material.

Customisation features - Photo chromic technology. Discreet fit to be worn under or over clothes depending on child’s preference.

Adapts as the child grown to minimise hospital visits, allowing the child to feel more normal, and also saving the NHS vital time and money.

FINAL OUTCOME

DESIGNING AN ADAPTABLE BRACE FOR SCOLIOSIS IN ADOLESCENTS TO REDUCE PREHABILITATION APPOINTMENT TIMES.

Injection moulded ABS body based off body dimensions taken from a 3D scanner. The shapes required for each brace are unique to each user.

ABS has the ability to be customised via tampo planing. The child can choose between a discreet plain coloured ABS to match outfits or skin colour, or a more unique printed pattern.

Each ABS panel is lined with memory foam to provide comfort for the user.

BOA system controlled from sleek button to tighten the brace according to doctors advice throughout the prehabilitation period.

By being adjustable at home, the brace reduces wait times for appointments and saves the NHS vital money by removing appointments which can be done from home.

Taught elastic straps run between the memory foam and ABS to keep the ABS plates together and allow for slight elasticity as the user puts the brace on.

SCRUBMATTIIC

A UNIQUE CHALLENGE SET BY MATTII LABS LTD TO UPCYCLE WASTE SILICONE FINGERS INTO A PRODUCT OF HIGHER QUALITY AND VALUE.

RE-FRAMED BRIEF: To design a versatile pet brush to be used wet or dry on all furry pets from dogs and cats to larger animals such as horses. The brush should give the waste silicone fingers a new and innovative life by having a self soap dispensing feature when used wet.

Central blue fingers with a perimeter of larger grey silicone columns with alternating holes allowing soap through during washing the pet.

Nylon strap with branding

Strap allows for a stronger grip when being used wet or for older generations who may suffer with arthritis or similar grip problems.

In-context user interaction

The screw off dome lid is simply filled with soap during grooming or for on-the-go use after muddy dog walks.

Injection moulded ABS body and lid - transparent for clear visibility of soap allowing it to be refilled as needed.

Compression moulded silicone insert with silicone finger bristleseasily removed for cleaning.

Black nylon strap with Mattii Labs branding - adds grip strength for all generations whilst hiding dirt due to the dark colour.

M33x3.5 thread on ABS components for easy screw on and off during use, cleaning and disposal.

MARKETING AND PRODUCT PROMOTION.

Targeting these two hotspots will greatly increase brand and product recognition. In line with similar existing products on the market, the Scrubmattiic retails at around £12.99. Its is a durable, well manufactured product consisting of three main components. The Scrubmattiic packaging consists of a simple tag allowing multiple brushes to be hung on hooks in shops to maximise space. A small box was considered however deemed an unnecessary waste of space and materials.
