Established in 2011 with a strong focus on sustainability, For the Love of Laundry is a premium laundry and dry cleaning service provider and is the first of its kind in Singapore to use a toxin-free technology that is effective on laundry and friendly to the environment. Their overall brand identity playfully takes cue from laundry care symbols and features a distinct colour palette of white and teal that is reflective of the brand’s meticulous and eco-friendly philosophies. Since its inaugural outlet in the eclective enclave of Club Street, several more have sprouted within the central region of Singapore to facilitate the growth of its operations. Nestled within the ground floor of a condominium, its River Valley outlet operates within a historical estate comprising mainly of commercial properties and housing developments that serve the middle to higher income population.

The overall shopfront features strong branding that takes advantage of the site's longitudinal attribute, without the expense of losing valuable operating space. Branding elements both 2D and 3D in nature, from graphic decals to a

flag mounted signage helps increase the brand's presence along the narrow and otherwise deary corridor with bold colours.

With the brief to optimise business operations by maximising storage space, creating an efficient and compact layout was key. Following the same strategy employed for the shopfront, the space comprises of two storerooms and a reception area

conveniently connected by a curtain and swing door, taking advantage of the unit's longitudinal allowance and affording easy transition and movement for staff.

Custom Joinery Wall Mounted Clothes Rack The brief was to allow for staff to hang customers' laundry at the reception prior to collection in a clutter free manner. The proposed solution is a wall mounted rack that is compact yet sturdy enough to hold up to five pieces of heavy clothing (such as coats and jackets) with diagonal notches indented along the bar to ensure that the clothes hang in a visually appealing manner towards customers. Dimensions: W430 ďż˝ D230 ďż˝ H30 (mm) Materials: Brass spraypainted hollow aluminium

Point-of-sale Counter (Initial Design) Though unrealised due to budget constraints, this design is worthy of mention due to its complexity which involved overlaying a tessellation of MDF modules to produce an interwoven pattern that alludes to a simple, everyday motif seen in the construction of fabric. An underlying gradient teal decal is visible through the perforations, akin to white laundry permitting vibrant colours layered underneath to shine through. Materials: 4mm THK anti-reflective clear tempered glass, white spraypainted MDF, teal coloured gradient vinyl decal

Located within the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District–Porcelain Signatures–the brand’s third and largest outlet offering its signatory range of facial spa treatments is an urban sanctuary whose targeted demography constitutes time-poor, white-collar workers who could benefit from a brief respite and indulgence. Akin to its former establishment located at a shopping mall in Singapore’s Shopping District, the brief detailed an integrated retail component in addition to its spa facilities to support and market its in-house skincare product line and allow for it to function as a brick-and-mortar business. Responding to the site context which incorporates lush greenery into the urban landscape, the outlet’s overall spatial language aims to seamlessly connect the exterior and the interior through a warm and natural material palette to invoke a soothing sense of calmness in visitors.

Upon entering, visitors are immediately welcomed by a warm and immersive retail area highlighted by an organically shaped point-of-sale counter rendered in a luxurious smooth concrete

finish, as well as a full height centrepiece retail bar display with its own integrated undulating ceiling feature made of 916 suspended clear acrylic bottles.

↑ The amount of detailing evident in each custom joinery stands as a testament to the meticulous efforts undertaken to ensure a well-executed end product. Pictured above is a shot of the treatment room cabinetry featuring diagonally assembled joints in an all laminate finish, a recurring design detail within the overall space.

( Porcelain, The Face Spa ) ( A ) 16 Dressed in a tranquil sea of greys, each treatment room comes fitted with its own inbuilt cabinetry and sanitary counter for convenient usage and features custom wall panels lined with wallpaper for a soft yet tactile finish. A coved ceiling with

dimmable lighting creates a soothing atmosphere without the expense of losing functionality during periodic maintenance after each session.

The main entrance, defined by a strip of white porcelain mosaic tiles—a threshold eponymous to the brand—opens up to an immersive retail space which showcases the products along a backdrop complimented by bold structures and warm

timber hues. The retail space attenuates into increasingly private niches comprising of the consultation rooms, skin analysis bar and the waiting lounge where visitors can enjoy a brief respite.

A detailed view of the waiting lounge bench’s leg, accented by a complimentary brass end capping at its base. The same approach is likewise adopted for the legs of the consultation room tables.

Waiting Lounge Bench Responding to the allocated space for the waiting lounge, the bench instinctively wraps itself around the curvature of the adjacent wall, resulting in its peculiar shape. The design itself is a nod to modernism, reminiscent of the minimalist daybeds of the early twentieth century and maintains a primarily neutral material palette that is consistent to the rest of the space. Dimensions: W2470 D840 H450 (mm) Materials: Grey fine wool blend upholstery, terrazzo look alike solid surface base, black powdercoated mild steel legs with brass end capping.

Consultation Room Table The table is kept as compact and functional as possible to allow for efficient usability in a space restraint area. A tripod solution is adopted to create more leg room while a circular structure results in a neutral shape that is impartial to people gathering around. Dimensions: Ø550 H750 (mm) Materials: Black powercoated mild steel base and legs with brass end capping, bent plywood frame in clear lacquered cypress veneer finish

Acting as a feature ceiling directly above the retail area, the monolithic centrepiece display is an undulating installation of 916 suspended bottles, replicas of the ones employed by the brand’s in-house product line stripped of their branding and in clear frosted finish. Each bottle is hung manually with the support of clear acrylic dowels sawn to individual lengths to ensure precision during assembly.

Illustrated here are the six modules that correspond to its respective rows of bottles, portraying clearly the extent of the undulation — with ‘Module A’ being the mildest and ‘Module F’ being the most severe. To complete the installation, 7 luminaires are hidden above the bottles to produce a warm billowing glow.

↗ The public square (currently under construction in the time of this writing) is returned to its rightful owners—the people of Melbourne—in the form of a public garden as a new focal point for the site. At the heart of it, a Vault-like structure appears to culminate in a flower-like composition in mid-bloom, resulting in cantilevered shelters and portals leading into its circulation core.

City Square from This View hypothetises of a radically designed Town Hall Station that is aimed at foregrounding the turbulent yet colourful history of one of Melbourne’s most underappreciated and often overlooked civic space. The station which is projected to be completed in 2025, witnesses the homecoming of the notorious Vault Sculpture by Ron Robertson-Swann whose artistic endeavour ended in less than 8 months following backlash which resulted in the sculpture’s eventual relocation but not before it was stigmatised as a politically charged symbol. 45 years since its unwarranted removal, the Vault—in the aftermath of the public turmoil—has surreptitiously creeped into our lives; inserting itself as architectural motifs, public sculptures and traffic barriers along Swanston Street, in its attempt to reintroduce itself into the fabric of Melbourne it once proudly occupies.

In the aftermath of its 45 year-long exile, the reinstated vault fervently weaves itself to all corners of the site; sweeping, digging, and piercing its way through earth in an impassioned attempt to embed itself much like an invasive plant would. It's

reincarnated form responds to the inevitabality of weather where commuters can navigate by taking note of its transition from a warm yellow to a copper patina as it inches towards the street level.

A series of montages were instrumental in its critique of City Square's role, as well as the themes that were explored in the developing of the final outcome throughout the semester.

↓ In light of the site's incessant state of renewal, City Square was depicted as a giant petri dish in its role as an inadvertent guinea pig of ideas for the benefit of the wider Melbourne.

( City Square From This View )

↓ The continuous white-washing of City Square results in a building up of tension occuring from within, depicted here as a shipping parcel which has given way by means of internal pressures.

( B ) 06

↑ The various facelifts which the site had undergone was regarded as being part of the City Coucil's agenda to achieve a Tabula Rasa state, evidenced by it attempts of wiping history off the slate.

In an act of tough love, the vault finds itself endlessly weaving through the site as it carves new spaces and programs. Visitors find themselves in a warm, quarry-like environment which feels completely seperated from the city. The exaggerated gestures allow one to visually trace the cause and effects of the vault in its venture through the site.

( B ) 08

( City Square From This View )

↑ The typically normative experience of locating amenities like toilets and cafes becomes a rewarding one, as if having stumbled upon a discovery. ↓ The water crashing upon the now soaked Bourke & Wills monument shields the station from the street noise above and acts as a natural screen to the washrooms behind.

( City Square From This View ) ( B ) 10 ↑

The Mega Screen ingeniously uses the Vault's towering structure as a sizable substrate, broadcasting upon itself advertisements and train times in a mural-like format as a relevant source of information as it makes the transition from floor to a canopy for the main foyer.

The tram stop is an example of the Vault's fervent but ambiguous motives as it decisively attaches itself onto the ground plane like a set of talons but provide ample shelter to commuters in the process of doing so.

↑ The existing (in the time of this writing) derelict state of the Total Carpark, riddled with graffiti and in its deteriotating concrete surface finish. ↗ The architecture displays an openness to the context as it physically takes on the bold colours of Melbourne’s CBD’s cultural artery of Chinatown. Cantilevering beyond the TV Box's facade are stairs precariously supported by members resembling chopsticks, alluding to its usage as a delicate art form.

This project speculates upon the potential rekindling of one of Melbourne’s most endearing yet increasingly derelict icon of modern architecture — Total House (1965) by Bogle & Banfield Associates. The building is now a mere shadow of its progressive past which sought to meet the growing demands of urbanisation by hybridising programs of disparate nature. Despite earning heritage status in recency, the architecture remains neglected for the most part and arguably irrelevant, save for the handful who value its quaintness where the office block has been likened to a TV Box. The strategies imbued within the proposed alteration considers the pre-existing and latent conditions of the Total Carpark through a series of operations that will reinvigorate its performative qualities for adaptive reuse and re-establish the building as an inclusive mix-used development within the cultural context of contemporary Melbourne CBD.

A series of montages were instrumental in the interrogation of the car park's distinct and progressive formal qualities.

↓ The building's scale correlates to its ambition of an allin-one mixed-use development during a time of rapid urbanisation in Australia where the words 'Total Pleasure' could hardly be made out.

↓ The distinct formal segragation and its associated functionalities alludes to an architecture of a kit of parts that is prefabricated and ready to be a added on by demand.

( B ) 16

( Totality By Subtraction )

↑ Its Japanese inspired design demonstrates a willingness to accept foreign concepts, which is generally how architecture is derived today where ideas are never restricted to a building's immediate context.

Rather than colloquially representing what Metabolism formally entails, the same intent was delivered uniquely by foregrounding the tectonic transitions the architecture undergoes.

↑

The once autonomous looking architecture devoid of conspicuous symbolism is given a cultural facelift which recognises itself as being a part of its diverse context of Melbourne today, having absorbed the vibrant colours of the Chinatown gateways in its adjacency.

The Little Bourke street facade receives an inclusive face lift that features a roof overhang, an open ground plane with a glass pilotis retail frontage and a receding bluestone paving finish that beckons you into the Japanese rock garden within.

The vertical library and archive is one of a handful of spaces that feature a triple volume ceiling space, where the sourcing of information becomes a recreational activity by means of rappelling from shelf to shelf.

( Totality By Subtraction ) ( B ) 24 ↑ The exhibition hall features an unconventional layout of inflatable pods that face one another in a compact setting as a reference to the traditional chinese courtyard dwellings. The sculptural central stairway takes center stage as a key circulatory element that additionally improves the quality of air as it expels toxic automobile fumes through its individually articulated balustrades. ↓ The car parking area demonstrates how the simple application of bold graphics and lighting can help alleviate the mundanities of everyday activities like parking ones 's vehicle.

↑ The undercroft event space features an off stage area where necessary paraphernalia may be lifted into and out of elevated storage bays that allow for the occurrence of pop up events below.

↓ The reinvigorated roof terrace with its improved quality of air and panoramic vistas into the city makes for an idyllic setting to catch a moment of respite or a casual jog within the city.

( Totality By Subtraction ) ( B ) 26 ↑

The office block's complex sculptural stairway network unveils the sectional quality of the architecture by allowing one to peer through to the highest most soffit and its adjoining skylight, an homage to the architecture's existing approach of curating views upwards.

The oversized landing above features a bar and restaurant aptly titled 'The Ramp' where one can dine underneath a sweeping, Chinese inspired roof skylight.

The building's upper roof features the same brick panel system which provides coverage to the mechanical plant room above. The brick panel's hit-and-miss pattern makes it ideal for such an application as it facilitates the various equipments' need for natural cross ventilation.

↗ The front cover of Portfolio №1 takes cue from the concept of lineweights, a key component in the drafting training I received in school as an interior design student. The variation each line undergoes subtly reveals the title of the book from the overall outset.

Portfolio №1 is a compilation of selected works and achievements of mine captured before and during my time as a student of Interior Design at Singapore Polytechnic. The overall visual theme of the book is inspired by Drawing Standards, a cardinal tool possessed by designers across all major fields that ensures legitimacy and accuracy in their work.

( D ) 04

( Portfolio â„–1 )

Scattered throughout the book are moments of interactivity where viewers are confronted by the opportunity to manipulate the overlaying of presented information in a tactile format.

( D ) 06

( Portfolio â„–1 )

↗ The book's cover design is occupied wholly by the brand's own press release information and acts as an interactive form of introduction to the brand's history which can only be read in its entirety when fully opened.

Executed in close collaboration with Alvin Tan, 1/3 founding partner of Singapore based luxury eyewear line Mystic Vintage. A catalogue featuring the full collection since the brand's inception and a foldable pamphlet were designed to accompany the brand in its foray into the international market.

( D ) 10

( Mystic Vintage )

The front portion of the pamphlet takes cue from the concept of 'Segregation' in its featuring of the various marketing campaigns which the brand has undergone through the years. The back portion is simultaneously juxtaposed by a concept of 'Unity' in how it presents an overview of the brand's range of eyewear in a uniform manner that incidentally enough, is equally effective in its segregation from one series to another.

Portfolio №2 takes a compendius look at two projects which I have led during my inaugural year-long stint working as an interior designer in the industry. This portfolio is inspired by the difference we strive to make, both big and small, as professionals in our respective fields. These differences are captured on the front cover as miniscule dots that represent each minute, day or task in our work where we attempt to make a lasting impact. Although the scale of each dot may be indiscernible on close view, the blobs or silhouettes become apparent as we begin to gaze upon them from a distance. This seeks to typify the concerted impact of the design industry in changing the lives of people, designliterate or not—the fruits of our labour.

( D ) 16

( Portfolio â„–2 )

The book's visual theme is informed by my personal belief of the impact designers strive to make regardless of their discipline, both big and small, which are represented as miniscule dots on the cover.
