Chicago, IL Located in downtown Chicago, this cluster of cylindrical forms creates a hybrid urban community that relies on spatial hierarchies to both blur the lines between public & private and redefine the boundaries which distinguish these uses. This juxtaposition seeks to subvert the negative associations of high-rise housing, including disconnect from the street level, isolation and limited views.

MATERIALITY Buildings in the Bywater neighborhood are dominated by shotgun style houses built with horizontal clapboard siding. Using this material texture with some manipulation we can reinforce the character of the neighborhood.

Kansas City, MO Homelessness in America is often perceived through a stereotypical image of drug addiction or mental health. In the Kansas City area however, a significant number of the homeless are families with two working parents. Exploring homelessness through architecture meant shining a light on the realities of homelessness and to provide for current needs of temporary shelter, safety and to empower men and women out of the cycles of homelessness. The key to this development is a prominent incubator which provides tennants with access to job-search assistance and training. This model relies on a strong alliance between private -public partnerships to raise propoer awareness throuhout the community to counter misconceptions about the realities of homelessness.

KANSAS CITY’S WESTBOTTOMS NEIGHBORHOOD

LOCATION

EXPANSION

DEVELOPMENT

The site has one existing building surrounded by brick warehouses and industrial facilities.

Pulling away the facade on the existing building opens up possibilities for reinvention.

Connecting the needs of the users to the scale of the neighborhood.

VOLUME

LAYERING

FORM

Building along the edge of the street to provide accommodations at the pedestrian scale.

Scaling the volumes to relate to use and create visual interest and variation.

The combination of volume and scale reveals modules appropriate to use and scale.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION Creating a prefabricated unit allows both efficiency in the construction and flexibility in layout. The choice of corrugated panels and corten steel reflect the context of the neighborhood’s industry while also being sensitive to the needs of the community.

PROFESSIONAL Firm: Perez Architecture Brooklyn, NY

New York City

During Hurricane Sandy, storm surges inundated residential neighborhoods of New York City damaging thousands of homes. New zoning regulations required many existing homes to be phyically elevated to heights established by FEMA as part of the recovery process. To elevate building structures, a detailed site analysis of the property was conducted and established the framework for guding a the final design plan to implemet resiliency measures that would reduce the impact of future storm events.

Each project site has a unique set of variables and required a thourough site assessment in order to develop a design plan. The critical issues concerned how high to elevate the structure, how to protect the building’s critical systems & to address life & saftey issues.
