La peinture sous verre, “souwere” au wolof est arrivée au Sénégal via les pays arabes à travers la Tunisie. Contrairement au Mali et à la Côte d’Ivoire, il y a très peu d’art statuaire et de masque au Sénégal. Le verre trouve alors au Sénégal un terrain inexploré et avantageux
souwere pour diffuser toute sa splendeur.
La peinture de Souwere constitue la principale tradition plastique au Sénégal.
The Senegalese under glass painting so called “fixé under glass” and
“souwere” in wolof came to Senegal
fom the Arabic countries through Tunisia. By opposition to Mali and Ivory Coast, there is very few statuary and mask art in Senegal. Glass then finds in Senegal an unexposed and advantageous ground to spread all its splendor. Souwere painting constitutes the main plastic tradition in Senegal.
