CALL ME KELLEN Hello, my name is Kellen Toomey, a current Master of Industrial Design candidate graduating in 2023. Before I started my current degree I received a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology with a Minor in Military Leadership. I discovered industrial design from a podcast that talked about biomimicry. I fell in love with the idea of designing for the world using lessons learned from evolution. Now that I am in my program and my knowledge of design is expanding there are many additional areas of design that interest me. My interests include CMF design, product modeling, concept art, user center design, design research, and museum space design. My design philosophy is to use my knowledge of cultural, behavioral, and linguistic anthropology in a team or as a leader to create a crossdisciplinary approach to design. I believe in order to design better products we have to understand the people we design for.

BONE HEALTH IN AGING POPUL ATIONS Individuals aged 55 to 85 are at risk of experiencing gradual wear of cartilage in their joints which causes pain. These symptoms can create limitations in everyday activities, including putting on and removing footwear. In order to alleviate this pain we wanted to design footwear that alleviates the need to bend and activate painful joints when putting on, securing, and removing their shoes.
How do we design footwear that makes the activity of putting on, securing, moving in, and removing footwear easier?

HYDRATION DURING SNOW SPORTS While skiing or snowboarding, there is an increased risk of dehydration. Snow athletes are less likely to drink the required amount of water they need because of the cold air and high altitude. Skiing and snowboarding require a high level of balance and coordination causing users to avoid carrying excess weight.
How do we design a water bottle that encourages staying hydrated without adding too much weight to the user?
INTERVIEW I conducted 8 interviews with skiers and snowboarders, my original intention was to design a backpack for equipment but made a more significant discovery.
HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
Not one interviewee carried water while participating in their snow sport.
1
• Doesn’t affect balance • Can fit in pocket
2
• Can be used with gloves • Large enough to effectively hydrate • Filter and melt snow
3
• Collapsible • Easy to clean
SIGNIFICANT QUOTES
IDEATION I began by sketching out water bottle shapes that would fit in a pocket and conform to the users body.

TRADITIONAL TEA PRAC TICES The act of making tea is an ancient and widespread tradition. Many people find peace when they create tea, but the older practices can be hard to complete in the fast, modern world. As the population continues to age, traditional tea practices will become more difficult to perform.
How do we design a kettle and tea set that allows a use to enjoy making tea while reducing the time and effort needed?
RESEARCH OBSERVATION Observer users completing the task of making coffee or tea with a kettle to identify pain points.
HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

• Increase the opportunities for olfactory interaction • Reduce or eliminate pouring motion
• Accurate water amount • Teperature variation • Filter water
USER EMOTIONAL MAPS Map the users emotional journey while completing the task, highlighting points when they are most and least satisfied

ESPRESSO MACHINE FOR AN IKEA KITCHEN
004
Fall 2020 4 month project
MAKING ESPRESSO AT HOME Espresso is one of the most popular ways to brew coffee but requires several pieces of equipment. To make a latte at home users have two choices: use a pod-based espresso machine or have a grinder, espresso machine, and milk steamer. Either option requires plenty of counter space or storage space.
How do we design an espresso machine that is compact, easy to use, clean, and makes good espresso?
RESEARCH
INTERVIEWS 2 interviews with coffee enthusiasts
Goal:
Understand the steps users take to make or acquire coffee, and why they take those steps. I conducted 2 interviews and received 220 responses to a survey. The most striking comment made was that many considered drinking coffee a ritual, but most users would choose the most convenient way to get their coffee.
SURVEY 220 responses
Users choose to go to a cafe for espresso based drinks because they are difficult to make at home. When users choose to make coffee at home their machines varied with some users choosing simple inexpensive machines and others choosing to invest in higher end machines.
SOLUTION Drawer espresso machine By putting the espresso machine into a drawer all necessary parts for making espresso drinks can be put together without taking up counter space. Unfortunately kitchen drawers are not a universal size but all IKEA kitchens are. IKEA is a brand that strives to make home goods accessible to all users. Their company matches well with the design aspirations so I chose to make the 30 inch SEKTION cabniet the base for the design. Parts to include: • Scale • Group head • Burr grinder • Hot plate for steaming milk • Portafilter • Milk pitcher • Tamper • Tamping mat • Sink Rinser • Water filter

ANDRO TUXEDO
DESIGNING THE OUTFIT I was inspired by dresswear, specifically tuxedos. I liked the idea of mixing masculine tuxedo lines with feminine elements like corsetry.
S HIR T SELECTING SHIRT PATTERNS
I selected Vouge Pattern V1659 for the shirt, it has a front placket that covers the buttons like a tuxedo shirt. I decided to make the shirt without the peplum because it would cover the corset. To add a more feminine element I selected a set of sleeve patterns opting for the Juliet style sleeve.
ORDER OF OPERATIONS • Cutting out pattern • Pattern fitting • Cutting out fabric • Style lines Front placket Princess Seams • Yoke • Side Seams • Collar • Sleeve Construction • Sleeve • Hems • Buttons and Buttonhole
PA NT S SELECTING PANTS PATTERN
I selected this pattern from etsy as it was the closest pattern to a true trouser for my tuxedo look.
ORDER OF OPERATIONS • Cutting out pattern • Pattern fitting • Cutting out fabric • Darts • Pockets • Inseams • Side seam Finish pocket • Tuxedo stripe • Crotch • Zipper • Waistband • Hem • Closure
