Area Information Gallatin County, situated in a spacious valley in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, is a perfect place to live. Covering over 2,500 square miles of beautiful mountainous yet diverse terrain, the county features temperate river valleys, snow-capped peaks, and open ranch and farm lands. More than half of the county’s territory is publicly owned National Forest and Wilderness as well as Bureau of Land Management prairie and riparian areas. With thriving technology and manufacturing sectors, it is one of the fastest growing economies in the northern Rockies. There are over 90 high-tech companies that are supported by MSU, a major research university, and an educated work force. Add to that the abundant cultural and outdoor recreational activities as well as proximity to the spectacular scenery and geothermal features of Yellowstone National Park and you have one of the best places in the Rockies for “healthy living and small business creation” as the county was ranked on a recent The State of the Rockies Report Card.

County. Originally within Crow Indian territory, Native American tribes traveled through the land they called the “Valley of the Flowers.” After the opening of the Bozeman Trail from the mining town of Virginia City to what is now Bozeman, the city’s fertile land attracted permanent settlers. With Virginia City’s gold magnate, Nelson Story’s, successful cattle drive along the Bozeman trail down into Paradise Valley, the area entered the cattle industry. Early on the cultivation of thousand of acres of peas for both canning and seeds gave the area the distinction of being the “Sweet Pea capital of the nation.” With its roots firmly established in agriculture, the Agricultural College of Montana State University was established in 1893 on land donated by Nelson Story. Today, Bozeman is a vibrant city that balances Sc agriculture and technology, tourism and local produca th ar :M oto tion, indoor and outdoor recreation. With the only mall Ph and international airport in an eighty-mile radius, it is a shopping and cultural hub not only for its own residents but also for rib ll T outlying communities, we o :P oto Ph especially those in nearby Madison and Park counties. Located seven miles from Bozeman, Gallatin Field has three runways and is serviced by seven airlines including low cost Allegiant Air. A recently completed renovation more than doubled the size of the terminal from 75,000 to nearly 200,000 sqare feet, expanded the number of gates from 5 to 8, quadrupled the passenger screening checkpoint, added a third baggage claim carousel as well as a new in-line baggage screening system— one of the first in the country that is capable of handling skis—and increased food, beverage and retail concessions. Architecturally, the building shows off the amazing Mountain views that surround this valley, inspiring visitors and reminding local travelers they are home. www.bozemanairport.com.

Beautiful Bozeman, with a 2011 population just under 40,000 making it the 4th largest city in the state, provides the amenities of a city with a small-town atmosphere set in the middle of nature’s paradise. Located in a wide valley in southwest Montana just 93 miles north of Yellowstone National Park, it offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and lush forests. Platted in 1864 by trailblazer and entrepreneur John Bozeman along with Daniel Rouse and William Beall, Bozeman is the county seat of Gallatin 5

and tournaments. It also hosts clubs, groups and teams of all ages in a multitude of sports from archery to wrestling. Add to that a full roster of NCAA MSU sports & privately owned and operated recreational facilities and you have the makings of a home base with something for everyone!

Belgrade Located 10 miles west of Bozeman, Belgrade is the 11th largest city in the state with a population of about 8,200 people. Founded in 1882, it was named after the capital of Serbia in honor of the European financiers of the Northern Pacific Railroad. For many decades Belgrade was a quiet farming community with businesses run by local families. The last two decades of the 20th century began a population boom that continues today. Because of its “open arms” policy to business, access to transportation and commitment to community, it has attracted everything from manufacturing to biotech businesses. The Belgrade Special Events Center is a 4,800-seat indoor facility that hosts not only its home team, the Belgrade High School Panthers, but also numerous district, divisional and state athletic events that bring thousands of people to Belgrade from all over the state. Belgrade has established itself as an independent community with excellent services and school system, and an unbeatable small town living experience. It’s a great place to live and do business!

Big Sky

In warm weather, tourists flock to the area around Big Sky for its blue-ribbon trout streams and lakes as well as the scenery and wide open spaces—something residents relish all year long.

Ennis The town of Ennis (population 1,049), located in Madison County 70 miles north of West Yellowstone and 60 miles southwest of Bozeman, sits in the Madison River Valley surrounded by three mountain ranges—the Madison, Tobacco Roots and Gravelly—in the heart of prime fishing and hunting territory. Cattle ranching, hay and grain farming, tourism, construction, gold mining and timber harvesting fuel the local economy. Nearby Quake Lake, formed by a massive earthquake in 1959, and the Old West Photo: Bayard Lewis

Located 18 miles from the Yellowstone National Park boundary and 48 miles from the West Yellowstone park entrance, Big Sky has a

year-round population of about 2,300 with seasonal growth spurred by tourism. Local education consists of a preschool, K–8 elementary and a high school. With two ski areas, the Big Sky Resort, founded in 1973 by NBC broadcaster Chet Huntly and Moonlight Basin, Big Sky boasts the Biggest Skiing in America®— more skiable acres than any other ski area on the continent. It consistently ranks in the top 10 best resorts in America and occasionally ranks as one of the top 10 resorts in the world. Annual snowfall is approximately 400 inches.

towns of Virginia City and Nevada City attract visitors to the area along with the Madison River’s blue-ribbon trout stream and Class IV rapids, the Kitchen Sink. The town also hosts a Labor Day weekend fly-fishing festival. Ennis features year-round outdoor recreation, an authentic western atmosphere, a K–12 school system, and a strong network of community organizations and churches to support its citizens.

Livingston As the original gateway to Yellowstone National Park 55 miles to the south, Livingston (population 7,400) is situated where the Yellowstone River bends from north to east toward Billings. Surrounded by three mountain ranges—Absaroka, Bridger and Crazies —the county seat of Park County is a Mecca for outdoor activity, and is home to the Fly Fishing Federation. Once a thriving hub for the Northern Pacific Railroad and home to Calamity Jane, Livingston is steeped in history that lends itself to the location sets of modern movies about the Old West such as “A River Runs Through It,” “The Horse Whisperer,” and “Rancho Deluxe,” to name a few. Today, the economy is sustained by local agriculture, timber harvesting, mining, tourism, and technology. An artist’s haven, and small writers’ and actors’ colony provide the cultural touch to soften the otherwise rugged edges. www.kwmontana.com
