ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE & Curriculum Breadth Curriculum . International Perspective . Global Citizenship . inclusion

Curriculum At Kellett we offer a holistic education that follows AN English National Curriculum and is reflective of our international setting. The curriculum is structured to enable students to meet and exceed the expectations of the English National Curriculum. Kellett begins with the Reception year and our curriculum builds a solid foundation for future learning. Preparatory classes place a strong emphasis on high levels of attainment in Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT). Subjects may be taught individually as pure subjects or within integrated themes—here experimental and collaborative learning are important strategies. The curriculum includes English, Design & Technology, Mathmatics, Music, Science, Physical Education, History, Global Citizenship, Geography, Mandarin, Art, French and ICT. The adventure in learning is supplemented by regular concerts, performances and assemblies that intersperse the year. These public performances offer students a great way to develop their confidence and public-speaking skills.

International Perspective The curriculum is enriched with frequent local and residential trips as well as an overseas educational visit, closely tied to the curriculum. The Prep curriculum draws heavily upon the local environment. It looks beyond Kellett to the outside world, allowing our students to gain an understanding of themselves and their responsibilities within the global community. The study of a modern foreign language is compulsory. Students study Mandarin from Reception, with French offered as an option from Year 3. Both languages are taught through a spiralling, sequential and communicative approach. The content is themebased, age-appropriate, expansive and practical.

Global Citizenship The Global Citizenship programme is embedded within our school curriculum. The core aim is to foster the development of confident, socially aware and responsible young individuals who are well equipped to take on new challenges and make a positive contribution to both our immediate community and the wider world. Good global citizens are empowered to take action based on the knowledge and values they have gained from learning about local and global issues. The programme is tailored to ensure it is relevant, up to date and acknowledges our international setting.

Inclusion Kellett is an inclusive school that aspires to meet the needs of all its students. Both the Preparatory and Senior Schools have a limited number of places available for students with Special Educational Needs whose individual requirements can be met in a mainstream setting through provision of a differentiated curriculum. The number of places available is determined by the level of student need within the SEN programme at the time. Learning support may also be offered to students who have experienced an English-medium curriculum with study units similar to but not synchronised to the National Curriculum. Inclusion also focuses on those students whose academic ability significantly exceeds that of their peers. These students form part of our extension programme, which supports students who excel in certain areas.

SPORTS & ARTS at kellett SPORTs . ART . MUSIC . performance

SPORTS Physical Education and Sports are an integral part of student life at Kellett School. We believe these areas are a core element of a balanced education, and so they are delivered through both the curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Our aim is to provide opportunity and encourage participation and sportsmanship, whilst promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. All students follow a broad and balanced programme in school, which encourages their individual development across a number of areas. They also learn to play an important part within a team. As a result of our commitment to PE and Sport, our students go on to national honours, representing Hong Kong in various sports, building on the foundations they have gained from school. Our links with the local sporting clubs and organisations are very strong and continue to grow, as does our reputation for sport within Hong Kong.

ART The Art programme at Kellett is seen as a vital aspect of all students’ development. Art plays a valuable role in our broad and balanced curriculum. Importance of self-expression, risk-taking in a safe and supportive environment and exercising the imagination and creativity of each individual are at the heart of the lessons. Art at Kellett is an exciting mix of investigating art from around the world, enjoying the hands-on sensory practice of using art materials and developing a personal aesthetic judgment. Much of the practical work created is linked

to other areas of the curriculum, enriching the students’ experience in the Art lessons while they gain a deeper understanding of history, religion, culture and science. The nature of creating art demands problem-solving skills and higher-order thinking, including analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The art experience raises self-esteem and supports excellent working practices of regular reflection, self-assessment and modification of work.

MUSIC It is our belief that all students should have the opportunity to be involved in music, whether it is an extra-curricular activity or strictly in a classroom situation.

The curriculum, activities and ensembles offered to students are pitched at different levels of performance and creativity, in order to best meet the students’ needs. At the centre of the programme is the principle that music should be fun and full of enjoyment. The repertoire and materials are carefully selected to provide a relevant experience for our students. Music at Kellett enjoys strong support from a large team of dedicated and skilled peripatetic teachers. Tuition is available in all orchestral instruments, as well as piano, guitar and drum kit. Instrumental hire is also available for interested students.

PERFORMANCE Great emphasis is placed on the importance of performance at Kellett. At Kellett we believe that performance aids development of confidence and public-speaking skills within each student. We provide a myriad of opportunities to all Preparatory students including class assemblies for all year groups as well as the annual school musical.

PASTORAL CARE Pastoral Care . Transferable skills

Transferable SKILLS

Pastoral Care Our Prep schools have robust pastoral care to ensure that each of our students understands that they are valued and secure within our community. Student well-being is a significant priority of all staff within the Prep School. While pastoral care is delivered and managed initially by class teachers, all members of staff play an active role in promoting positive relationships and appropriate behaviour. Outside the classroom our team of Teaching

Assistants, the Inclusion department, the Well-being Team and our Safeguarding Team all closely and sensitively monitor the welfare of students, offering support, guidance or intervention as appropriate. Ten transferable skills form the basis for our curriculum approach to pastoral care. They are explored within assemblies, woven into curriculum units and, alongside the team-building aspect of our physical education programme, help us to ensure that students are well-informed about the choices they make.
