Type: Adaptive Reuse: Assisted Care Facility Location: Logan, Utah Sf.: 33000+

This Assisted Living Facility is all about mental and physical health. Drawing inspiration from naturally soothing elements, soft lapping waves come to mind. They stimulate all of our senses and bring back soft memories throughout our lives. Strategies throughout the design are meant to marry both sustainability with the mental and emotional wellbeing of the residents. Examples include the large trees on the property not only provide the passive cooling and micro climate to reduce energy demand, but also help to keep the inside views consistent as those with degenerative memory diseases may feel lost or fearful when they no longer recognize their surrounding. The large trees provide consistent views throughout the duration of the residents stay.

When selecting the planting for the site, the intention was to reduce water consumption, provide habitat restoration, as well as keep the landscape interesting and attention grabbing all year for increased quality of exterior views.

Each one has unique quality to achieve each one of these goals. All species are native to the area, provide unique blooms, varying forms and restore habitat for different native species.

FUSION “blend or cause to blend gradually into something else so as to become indistinguishable from it.” We address the design with a whole hearted dedication to improving the quality of living for the residents in the Lower Downtown Denver area. By adding a grocery store below pre-existing apartments, and surrounded by other living areas with needs that can be fulfilled by this facility, we fuse together the pieces of the community by serving their needs and vice versa. The entire project consists of renovating the old Tattered Book Store and existing apartments. By updating the apartments, creating a common areas with tenant serving functions and adding the grocery store the design creates a service for the whole community.

The objective for the interior is to serve the community by supplying them with services they require and quality environment. Energy efficient appliances can be found throughout the building, but most impressive is the

refrigeration used by the grocery store. Each piece of equipment reduces energy demand below the standard pieces of equipment, decreasing the overall demand significantly over the lifetime of the store.
