FIELD EXPEDITIONS 4

Painting in the Grand Canyon

Painting the Urban Landscape NYC

Gregory Hull  May 6–16, 2014

Patti Mollica  May 19–23, 2014

This unique 10-day, 220-mile river journey through the Grand Canyon has been custom designed to create a oncein-a-lifetime plein air painting experience. You will capture afternoon and morning light in camp, then travel by boat to the next destination midday. Each camp is selected for its exquisite views. There will be layovers at two exceptional sites. Gregory Hull will provide instruction including demonstrations, group and individual critiques, and personal guidance.

Hosted by the National Academy of Design, this workshop will be about capturing in paint the unexpected beauty of light and form in New York City. Your digital photographs taken on the streets and in the parks and museums of the city will become reference for painting. Patti encourages students to develop multiple paintings during the 5-day workshop. On the last two days, students are invited to explore a technique in representational collage using acrylics and papers to capture the vibrancy of this world-class city.

Undiscovered Country

Karin Jurick  Jun 16–20, 2014

David Santillanes  Sep 9–11, 2014

Karin Jurick has taken her dynamic workshop to the museums of New York City, the streets of San Francisco and the beaches of Hilton Head Island. Now she returns to Chicago, her favorite place to capture in paint. Students will have the opportunity to work from prints of the photographs they’ve taken on the streets, in the museums and in the parks of the city. Karin will guide students in the process of painting (and editing) from photos while keeping the paint application fresh and the colors rich and bright.

Capitol Reef National Park offers an extraordinary landscape of tilted planes and deep mysterious canyons. We will paint one day from Panorama Point, one day from an area at the end of Scenic Drive, and one day will spent on Boulder Mountain overlooking it all from magical aspen groves. David Santillanes will guide students in capturing the unique rock formations and atmospheric perspective for which this terrain is known. Demonstrations and individual consultation will round out this three-day immersion. Four nights lodging is included in tuition.

Learn the secrets of creating high performance art with Prismacolor™ Art Pencils. Award winning artist Richard Drayton will guide students through step-by-step techniques that will result in rich blended color and exciting composition. Participants may use their own subject matter or projects provided by the instructor.

How much information is necessary in a painting? What can be left out while still capturing the essence of the subject? Translating detail into simple shapes is one way to arrive at the essential. The goal of this workshop is to reduce images into their simplest terms—shape, value and color— while looking for the unexpected elements as defined by light.

This master-level intensive workshop is NOT about copying the superficial appearance of subjects, but rather trying to get inside and see what compositions are made of and learning to use abstract shorthand to describe what is there. We will cultivate the perceptual tools of rapid visual summation and notation in a “perceptual moment.” See also The Perceptual Moment, page 8.

Is getting started scary? Does carrying everything keep you from painting/ sketching? Whether you’re a raw beginner or a professional, Pocket Sketching is for you. A 4 x 6-inch format can go anywhere. When you’re working, everything fits in your “personal space” whether in a café, on the subway, on a horse…anywhere. You’ll learn to create so much with so little!

Participants in this Zen calligraphy workshop will playfully paint the unknown, the “energy” of music, a Rumi poem, the sound of silence or their heart’s desire. Artists and non-artists drawn to the adventure of being intimate with the unknown will become more relaxed and available to existence. Alok teaches Zen as art and art as Zen.

Students will learn a unique figurative collage technique using under-painting and painting various papers to create a palette of colors to collage for a final finish. Working with photographic reference, you will explore drawing, composition, proportion, value, color and collage application. Emphasis will be on developing form using color as light and shadow.

In her signature workshop, this awardwinning artist will demonstrate a variety of drawing and annotation techniques, guiding you through step-by-step instruction from first stroke to finished sketch. Your field kit of tools includes graphite and watercolor pencils to be explored within a 4 x 6-inch sketchbook, all included in the class fee.

Encaustic is an ancient painting technique dating back to the 5th century B.C., but wax monoprinting on paper is brand new! Using melted pigmented waxes and a variety of papers, we will build washes and visual texture to achieve rich nuances of tone and depth. Use of paints and equipment is included in the cost of the workshop; students provide some supplies.

Jan creates an atmosphere of fun and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. Her layering method yields aggressive textures with materials that play off one another to express emotion. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the spontaneity and energy of not knowing where you’re going until you get there!

This class explores five time-honored techniques of drawing and different ways they can be creatively combined to discover your own personal style. Taught with patience, humor and the practical goal that you will enjoy drawing for the rest of your life, this course is designed for absolute beginners and those who wish to refresh their drawing skills.

Often, colors cannot be matched to what is seen in nature or a photograph and luminosity gets lost. In this workshop the focus is on color—rich, luminous, glowing color—while also going over the basics of creating wonderful watery effects. All waterbased mediums are welcome. We will work with the transparent element of water-based mediums.

Abbey Ryan wants you to have a positive painting experience every time! Through one-on-one instruction, she will meet you where you are, answer all your questions and teach the basics of successful still life paintings: selecting and arranging objects, lighting, brush selection, canvas toning, palette choices, paints and mediums.

Apr 12–13, 2014

Apr 21–25, 2014

This master-level class is for those with some experience painting en plein air. The workshop will concentrate on deepening and cultivating our visual sensitivity by looking critically at nature and painting with the loaded brush—aspiring to broad yet particular summations of form, naturalistic color and clarified visual mood.

In this intensive weekend workshop we will learn the advantages of plein air painting, various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures.

For Michael Workman, the act of painting usually starts with an emotional response to the landscape and is ultimately completed by the viewers through their emotional responses to the painting. A delicate balance is achieved in his paintings between realism and abstraction. This workshop will emulate Michael’s process from outdoors to final development in the studio.

Gain technical skill in layering watercolor, water- and wax-based colored pencils, conté crayons and more in a variety of ways as we draw the beauty of Sedona.

Explore the meaning and mystery of this ancient signpost/calendar by learning to produce plein air paintings using a variety of simple techniques demonstrated by Robert’s award winning watercolor style of interpretive realism. Robert provides educational context to aid in interpretation of the V Bar V Petroglyph Site as a Native American Heritage Site.

This five-day intensive workshop invites painters at all levels to immerse themselves in the “daily practice of art.” Sessions will include drawing quick thumbnails and sketches, the development of strong composition and values to build a successful painting. We will work on location for two days sketching, painting and gathering resource material then refine our work in the studio.

Figurative Retreat

Lorri Acott  Apr 4–6, 2014

John Soderberg  Apr 13–17, 2014

Robert Burridge  May 5–9, 2014

Participants in this workshop will learn a new way of working with clay. Using fiberclay (regular ceramic clay impregnated with fibers) allows for elongated, fragile forms. The class will culminate with an actual raku firing and each student will leave with a finished sculpture. This will be a fun, handson, experimental experience.

A critical foundation of sculpture, whatever the sculptor’s style and approach, is the ability to realistically sculpt the human head while capturing and conveying facial expression and emotional content. If one can sculpt the human face effectively, one can sculpt anything. In this workshop we will sculpt a life-sized human head.

This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a looser, abstract approach to drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. You will learn the 12 elements of Design Composition for a successful painting. There will be plenty of gestural drawing, paint sketching and finger painting to achieve looser, bolder, more intuitive paintings.

Koo Schadler  Nov 10–14, 2014

Through demonstration and one-on-one attention this workshop will guide you to completing an alabaster stone sculpture. The workshop will be appropriate for professional artists as well as beginners. Subject matter could be a bust, animal, still-life or bas-relief. Quarried alabaster stone, approximately 14” high, will be provided and students will be able to choose the stone appropriate to their theme.

Through drawing, collage and painting on paper, students will learn the key lesson of modern art: activating the negative space to create images that are both representational and dynamically abstract. Two days of drawing and collage will be integrated into painting from the model where the figure is considered an element of a composition rather than a subject matter in itself.

Because of its luminosity and fine line work, egg tempera is an ideal medium for rendering the human face. In this workshop you will learn every step for developing a portrait in egg tempera. Koo Schadler explains the traditional Old Master palette used to develop flesh tones. She will also work on a painting of her own, so you can see firsthand how she develops her portraits.

CERAMICS

RAKU CERAMICS: A CONTINUING REVOLUTION An exhibition, workshop, lecture and tea ceremony presenting the origins and contemporary practice of raku ceramics. Raku ceramics have been at the center of two artistic revolutions—the birth of the traditional Tea Ceremony in 16th-century Japan and the Clay Revolution in Southern California in the 1950s. In both instances, raku became a liberating technique and philosophy that stimulated new ways of creating and experiencing clay. Raku continues to lend itself to invention and experimentation. Constantly evolving, its spectrum of expression has expanded to include political and social statements as well as achieving a balance of simplicity and sophistication that transcends function.

New Forms, New Surfaces Patrick Crabb and Jim Romberg March 8–9, 2014 Patrick Crabb draws from many cultures for his sculptural works in clay while Jim Romberg brings Japanese aesthetics, Abstract Expressionism and the natural environment together in his work. Both will demonstrate forming techniques using the wheel and hand-building methods. A wide variety of surface treatments involving slips, stains, glaze, and the impact of texture on color in raku reduction will be demonstrated. Then workshop participants will have the opportunity to glaze and raku-fire their own bisqued works. The adjacent “Raku Tradition Transformed” exhibit will serve as a focal point for discussion of other approaches to raku, the origins of raku, its relation to the traditional tea ceremony, and the raku influence on contemporary ceramics.

INTERNATIONAL RAKU INVITATIONAL

“Raku Ceramics: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression” March 7–17, 2014 An international exhibition of historical and contemporary raku works including some of the early pioneers of modern raku: Paul Soldner (USA), Rick Dillingham (USA), Jean Biagini (France), Aline Favr (Switzerland), Tim Andrews (UK) and Fabienne Gioria (Switzerland). Also work from invited contemporary raku artists including the work of Jim Romberg and Patrick Crabb. Some works will be for sale.

Gallery talk by curator Jim Romberg March 12, 5:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Pre-registration advised.

Raku Firing & Tea Ceremony Ott, Romberg, Oshi March 16, 2014, 1–5 p.m. Raku firing and post-firing procedures create unique, one-of-a-kind effects that reflect not only the vision of the ceramist but also the engagement of a natural process—one that makes heat, fire and smoke part of the artist’s final statement. This immersive experience will begin with a demonstration of raku glazing options, then each participant will be given a bisque-fired tea bowl to glaze and fire. After a special tour of the raku exhibition led by curator Jim Romberg, participants will use their finished bowl in an authentic Japanese tea ceremony hosted by Mushima Oshi. Limited to 20 participants.

tuition $125/no experience required

Waves of Clay Jason Snelson  May 3–4, 2014 Learn to make unique vessels with character, movement and texture. Multiple techniques and approaches to making stacked vessels from sections thrown on the potter’s wheel will be demonstrated as well as non-traditional techniques for hand building vessels. Tuition includes 12 pounds of clay, glazes and firing.

We Thank Our Donors!

The Sedona Arts Center has been changing lives for more than 50 years! Founded in 1958, the Sedona Arts Center has been the foundation of art education in Northern Arizona for more than half a century. It’s first (and current) home was in the Jordan family’s apple packing barn. A lot has changed since then. We’ve grown and expanded, but the Art Barn remains at the heart of the organization. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization we still work to fulfill the same mission:

Our Mission The Sedona Arts Center is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to nurturing creative discovery, learning and sharing through arts education and artistic development.
