FUNCTION

The Steelcase Bivi desk system offers the flexibility, open collaboration and storage needed in Elsy’s firm. While coworkers can do heads-down work, they are also given the opportunity to engage with each other without having to move locations. This system also provides the opportunity for teams working on specific projects to sit near each other and collaborate. The Herman Miller Sybl chairs provide employees with all day comfort and mobility.

REI

Flagship Store, Washington DC Pave Competition 2015 Semester: Fall 2014 Professor: Deb Norman REI’s mission is to embrace the outdoors and encourage people to get active. The concept Bountiful but Organized relates to the way nature is organized organically. Such as many pines flooding a forest, where rocks and fish are more abundant in streams. REI uses technology and space planning to organize their bountiful products. Creating a unique product-nature relationship, the market like feel is implemented in collections of eclectic items, intimate spaces, natural materials and repetition of design elements evoking the bountiful but organized feeling nature has to offer.

ORGANIC Back of House

the plan has a rigid structure at the front the store and gradually progresses into a natural organization as one travels farther into the store. The exterior beams imitate the mountain icon that is standard to REI. Displaying products on the front fixture immediately gives customers a tangible, market feel to the store with various stumps giving the fixture an eclectic nature.

Sea Side Villa

Passive House Gozo, Malta Semester: Summer 2015 Co Designer: Alana Rattner Professor: Mary Rogero

The Maltese culture and architecture is primarily comprised of limestone, which is not only long lasting structurally, but also acts as a cooling element for the interiors. Through studying sustainable communities and the thermal envelope, the goal of the project was to create a family villa large enough for 7 people, with a neighboring villa and an optional opening to share the two. They include a sustainable thermal envelope and meet the needs of the hot Maltese climate.

CULTURE DRIVEN

through the many elaborate patterns found in old Maltese Architecture, the diamond shape seen throughout is an example. The villa includes a large covered dining area outside catering to the typical lifestyle, spending most time outside.

Urban Loft

St. Joseph, MI Semester: Fall 2013 Professor: Gulen Cevik

This project was focused on designing a residential loft for a family with a member that has special needs. The Iddings have three boys, one with down syndrome and another with autism, therefore their design needs are different than most. Those needs were met through elements such as an open floor plan, intentional placement of the playroom, and a large patio with a play-set. Moments of stacking and use of positive and negative space through the push and pull of three dimensional objects tie the design together.

POSITIVE & NEGATIVE design details such as the wall shelving partition consisting of the push and pull of the volume reveals the negative space. The great room displays this concept in the division of floors and use of wood and glass.

Furniture Design

Furniture Studio Semester: Spring 2015 Professor: Greg Rutherford

Given the opportunity to design any style of cabinet, part of a cabinet wall, my inspiration revolved around a textile. Intrigued by the laying of the textile through dyes, embroidery and the texture created, I was challenged to fabricate the textile in a new medium, wood. This included engraving the background pattern with a background stain as well as a third layer of paint creating another texture. Tight joints and functional hardware completed the piece, intended as a wall cabinet for office supplies that lifts horizontally. The bench was designed to compliment the cabinet through the use of similar angles and layering of wood.

23

THE CABINET

was inspired by the textile with multiple layers through dying, weaving and embroidery elements and translated from a cloth base to wood.

THE BENCH

was derived from the angles that compliment the diamond like pattern engraved on the cabinet. This pattern added another layer to the textile, likewise on the cabinet. The intent was to create a simple, clean-lined piece that compliments the layering and angles of the cabinet.
