Introduction to Design Fall 2015 With Debbie Kupinsky
Table of Contents: I. Dot Line Project II. Hand Lettering III. Designer Presentation IV. Childrens Book V. Object Iteration
Dot & Line Project The dot and line project is based on the Gestalt Theory which is six elements of design which causes the design to be interesting or pleasing to the viewer. The theory of Gestalt is that specific components, when put together in a composition, have an overall effect on the viewer. Every piece of the composition matters. For this project, we were given the instruction of conveying an emotion through an abstract 4x4 composition of just dots and lines. It was a huge challenge to come up with abstract compostitions that conveyed feelings but, it was very meditative and self reflective. I found that I had to look within myself to define what I believe an emotion would look like. It was awesome to get feedback from classmates especially when they could easily see the emotion you were trying to convey.
Hand Lettering Hand lettering was the second project in this design course. Hand lettering was really interesting because the design of words and letters are used virtually everywhere. Hand lettering can be seen in logos, books, websites etc. Last summer my sister and I began a clothing brand called “Wack. We spent days coming up with the lettering for our logo therefore, I though it was really interesting to work on all different hand lettering styles and concepts. Hand lettering is applicable to real life especially in marketing.
Designer Presentation
For my designer presentation, I chose to focus on Shel Silverstein. Ever since I was a kid I loved Shel Silverstein’s work. I remember my mom reading “The Giving Tree” to me and crying. At the time, I did not understand why she was sad! Now when I read Shel’s books and poetry, I see how relateable the stories are to adults in a more serious sense. Shel Silverstein’s pieces of work have different messages and meaning for everyone. Shel’s illustrations were awesome to look at and learn about as well. Shel Silverstein always kept his drawings quite simple but, like his narratives, the drawings have strong meanings and can be quitmoving.
Children’s Book The final project for this design course was the children’s book. I was paired with an education major to illustrate her childrens book. The book that I was assigned was called “Season’s for You and Me” by Amber Becker. Amber was very sweet and gave me free reign to design the book however I saw fit. I used alot of Photoshop because I have always wanted to learn skills on the Photoshop program. I learned a lot about Photoshop and I think these skills will carry forward with me into the real world.
When you walk outside, what do you see?
I see kids swimming and birds singing up in trees.
Object Iteration Object iteration was the most creative project in my opinion. We had free reign to choose any object and imagine it in any form, texture, color, etc. I enjoyed using collaging to make my object the most. The object I chose was sunglasses. When I used collaging to make sunglasses I was able to make the sunglasses out of the word “up and then a variety of pop culture pictures.
St. Norbert College Introduction to Design Debbie Kupinsky
Thank you Debbie for an amazing semester. This is the first art course I have taken at St. Norbert College and you have made it a great experience. I feel that I have learned a lot about design in the welcoming and creative environment that you have created within your classroom. This class was truely like no other and I thoughrally enjoyed every minute of it. I will always remember the skills we learned and more importantly the laughs we shared as a group. Thank you for ending my college career on a high note. XO Kelly Cox
