About the CUNY School of Professional Studies
D
rawing on CUNY’s renowned faculty and practitioners, as well as industry and education partners, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) provides opportunities for personal growth, job mobility, greater civic participation, and new ways to advance knowledge. Offering ten bachelor’s degrees, eight master’s degrees, undergraduate and advanced certificates, and professional non-degree programs, we provide online and on campus programs that meet the needs of adults who are looking for a seamless way to finish or transition into a bachelor’s degree, earn a master’s degree or certificate in a specialized field, advance in the workplace, or change careers. Launching eighteen degrees since 2006, the schools growth has been remarkable. Enrollment has grown to over 2,700 students in the credit-bearing programs, and the School has seen more growth in its non-credit offerings, with a portfolio of grant-funded programs currently accounting for more than $18 million. Affirming its role as a leader in online education, CUNY SPS was ranked in the top 5% of U.S. News & World Report’s list of the 2016 Best Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs, forging ahead from its top 15% position in 2015. Of the institutions listed, CUNY SPS ranks 1st in New York State and 11th in the nation. In addition, the School now maintains an active Alumni Association and has established the CUNY SPS Foundation, awarding named scholarships totaling more than $400,000 to its students since 2012.
Keynote Address: Sonia Manzano
F
or over 30 years, Sonia Manzano inspired, educated, and delighted children and families as “Maria” on Sesame Street. Named among the “25 Greatest Latino Role Models Ever” by Latina Magazine, Manzano broke ground as one of the first Hispanic characters on national television. Throughout her career, she has continued to contribute to enriching diversity on television, on the stage, and in education. A first generation American of Latin descent, Manzano’s tale is one of perseverance and courage as she overcame countless obstacles to become one of the most influential Latinas in television.
Manzano, raised in the South Bronx, was inspired by teachers who encouraged her to audition for the High School of Performing Arts. A scholarship took her to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and in her junior year, she came to New York to star in the original production of the off-Broadway show Godspell. Within a year, Manzano joined the production of Sesame Street, where she eventually began writing scripts for the series. Twice nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series and an equally impressive stage actress, Manzano has appeared on stage in several critically acclaimed theater performances, including “The Vagina Monologues,” “The Exonerated,” and “Love, Loss, and What I Wore.” Movies include “Deathwish,” “Follow That Bird,” and “Elmo in Grouchland.” An award-winning television writer and children’s book author, Manzano is also a master storyteller. She won 15 Emmys as part of the Sesame Street writing team, wrote for the Peabody Award-winning children’s series Little Bill, and continues to inspire children off screen. Manzano’s children’s book, No Dogs Allowed, was selected by the General Mills initiative “Spoonfuls of Stories” to become a children’s musical to encourage childhood literacy. Her first young adult novel, The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, examines the Latino community during the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of a young girl coming of age in the midst of social upheaval in Spanish Harlem in 1969. Manzano has also written a parenting column for the Sesame Workshop website called “Talking Out Loud,” she is an advisor for literary NY institution Symphony Space, is often a reader for Selected Shorts, and regularly reads for their adult literacy program All-Write. Manzano received the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Award in Washington, D.C. and the Hispanic Heritage Award for Education in 2003, she was inducted into the Bronx Hall Of Fame in 2004, and most recently, accepted a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement award. A staunch advocate for education, Manzano shares her extraordinary talent to help children to succeed. A fearless trailblazer, Manzano opened the doors for Latinas on screen. Infusing humor and charm into her presentations, Manzano inspires audiences with her passion, strength, and insight.

Academic Regalia The wearing of caps and gowns in academic ceremonies is a long held tradition dating back to the medieval beginnings of the university system. In that era, heavy woolen robes were de rigueur, though this was due more to a lack of heat in the halls of academia than to a passing trend in fashion. Contemporary fabric blends may be replacing the traditional woolen robe, but the signature colors and styling for this regalia remain steadfast against the passing of time. Gowns for those who have earned a doctorate degree tend to be quite elaborate, featuring wide bell sleeves and velvet panels running down the front and across the sleeves. These gowns, which at one point in American history were universally black, are generally connected by their color to the degree-granting school of the graduate. Master’s level gowns are characterized by their long squared-off sleeves, while bachelor’s gowns are identifiable by their clean lines and long-pointed sleeves. The hood worn by academics reveals additional insight into the education of the wearer. The inside of each hood is lined in the colors of the graduate’s alma mater, while the border around the hood generally indicates the degree subject of the graduate. Hoods are worn draped around the throat and over the shoulders, so that the identifying colors can be easily spotted under the chin.
