FORM GENERATION
Kelly Duggan

The abstract mediation exercise provokes students to think critically about the origins of form. Various graphic mediators are collected from unconventional places (magazines, details of urban conditions, paintings, etc.) And placed within a study area to generate ideas about how the site might be configured.
TEXTURE Frayed fabric from a loading dock, when scaled and superimposed on a site, can become something entirely different.

NONREPRESENTATIONAL ART Abstract paintings can generate ideas about how the site might be configured formally, spatially and programmatically.
ORGANIC FORM The intricacies found in a leaf can be interpreted as roads, lots, cul-de-sacs, biotopes, or programmatic zones.

RE: Connective Tissue What was once a relatively dense, walkable neighborhood at the turn of the twentieth century is today a complex network of highways. This transformation took the site from a place that fostered human interaction and connection to place that eliminated as many opportunities for human contact as possible. This project will transform the space once again by reestablishing the connection that once existed in a new way.

Palimpsestual tracings, inspired by the method of “scaling created by Peter Eisenman, draw from the history of the site and meaningful places in its vicinity. The forms are sampled, scaled, superimposed and reconfigured in a way that acknowledges the cultural memory tied to the site while not allowing simplistic references to the past to constrain its potential for the present and future.

This park is conceptualized as an urban infrastructure as equally important as the highway infrastructure privileged by an earlier generation of urbanists. This new urban megaform provides opportunities for multiple types of connection– connections with the site itself and between the human and non-human visitors that traverse it. This new public realm promotes public gathering through programs and experiences – creating a new image of the city for occupants and passers-by.

URBAN FARM
The project is achieved through the following primary systems, or “biotopes”: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Woodland – Patches of vegetation, primarily occupied by a variety of tree species. The trees will be densely planted, creating a largely closed canopy that provides a shaded oasis within the space. Lawn – Expansive, open areas planted with turf-forming grasses that offer opportunities for public gatherings, picnics, farmer’s markets, etc. Garden – Spaces that display and cultivate a variety of specimen plantings. Meadow – Open, sunny patches primarily occupied by wildflowers that support wildlife and pollinating insects, making them an integral part of the larger urban ecosystem. Pedestrian/Cyclist – Paths designed to move those on foot and bike through the various spaces within the site in a thoughtful way. Kid – An aesthetically pleasing playground installation provides opportunities for children and their families to interact with one another, the site and its programs. Wetland – A large portion of the site is devoted to an artificial wetland corridor that serves as the “spine” of the park. This space will host a variety of wildlife and plants that contribute to the ecosystem.
