It was built ca. 1910 and used to house grades K - 05 with an enrollment around 230. There are a total of three buildings that have been built in different time periods. The school was closed in 2013 and the City of Morgantown purchased the buildings and 3.5 +/- acre site which was used for parking and play areas.

Woodburn elementary school was a neighborhood school located in the Woodburn neighborhood of Morgantown, WV. It now houses organizations that serve the local community.

WOODBURN ADDITION

OBJECTIVE

The focus of this project was on the interior design of aproposed (4) four storey 48,000 +/sq. building using an organization/program of your choosing that would have an interest in relocating to the new building on the Woodburn Elementary School site. You are responsible for one organizaon. You will need to identify the most relevant and appropriate area/s of the proposed building.

SOLUTION

I chose to design this building for kids in grades K-12. The main focus of my building is to provide meals before and after school hours, as well as through the summer months. A large issue, especially in my home state of West Virginia, is students in these grades not always having access to meals when they need. Some students only get the meals that are served at school, and may not have another meal until they get to school the next day. In order to provide for them, I designed the space to feel like a restaurant and not so much like a cafeteria. Along with providing a place for these kids to eat, I added two large classrooms, additionaly study tables, reading nooks, and a private office. The classrooms are designed for the students to attend tutoring sessions and work on homework. The private office is for use of a full-time counselor that will help the kids with things school related, job related, and mental health related. These are all things we could use a little bit of help with at these ages and will give them more privacy than having to meet during school hours.

(n.) The view or doctrine that the world can be improved through human effort (often understood as an intermediate outlook between optimism and pessimism) There will be a sense of individualism and community. There shall be light colors, textures, and materials to create a sense of peace and tranquility. There shall not be disconnection in the architecture and the design.

“With a mobile, “pop-up bank”, we are able to provide the same services, in a faster and more efficient manner.”

NEW ERA OF BANKING OBJECTIVE

To design a small, semi-permanent pop-up experience for Bank of America. The building will be up-to-date with all technolofy, high-thoch, and has the capability of living on a college campus. It will serve as a place for every day banking, travel, auto, and student loan support, credit card advice, financial education, as well as ATM transactions.

SOLUTION

A bank that is mobile but still provides all of your daily banking needs is suitable for everyone; this is especially helpful for college students that are stuck on campus most of the day and week even. Although there are several different banking branches that are offered, it seems that they can easily get backed up and people end up waiting longer than it took them to do what the needed to do in the first place. With a mobile, “pop-up bank, we are able to provide the same services, in a faster and more efficient manner. The ability to be mobile will save money in the long run because the structure itself is much smaller than a stand-alone bank branch, there will be less full-time employees, and there are less expenses in general that come along with it. In order to exemplify the importance of delivering together, each customer that enters will get an individualized experience so they are reminded that they and their time matters. This will be shown through discipline and passion. The employees running the popup shop are to show integrity. They will be clear, fair, and ground the principles of shared success. They are encouraged to have a diverse background in order to make us stronger overall. In order to be the most successful, we will work together with individuals that work in stand-alone bank branches on a daily basis and find new ways to improve whatever we can in order to make the customer have the most pleasant experience every time.

Morgantown Airport OBJECTIVE

To develop a symbolic design proposal for the Morgantown Municipal Airport renovation. The scope included enhancing the main terminal, improving overall wayfinding of the building, and upgrading the passenger experience as they arrive and depart.

SOLUTION

Airports are the most important places for business and leisure and are the first impression a person has when visiting a new place. They provide a great opportunity to travel, relax, and enjoy yourself. Visiting an airport should be a memorable experience for everyone. It is not only about the flight but also about how you feel when you are there. The Morgantown Municipal Airport has been redesigned with the purpose of providing a perfect environment for people to enjoy themselves and have a great first impression of Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Airports should have good lighting, comfortable seating, and excellent facilities. A clean and neat atmosphere will ensure your guests can relax and enjoy their surroundings. Local art and culture were kept in mind during the designing of the airport as it is an important part of the overall development of the city of Morgantown. Incorporating technology into the airport was very important because it helps in improving efficiency and interactivity in the airport. Keeping up with the latest trends helps make. A complete redesign was necessary to increase traffic in the airport. The new design should encourage people to visit the airport to see local artists works and enjoy the history behind the area.

Residential

Simply Savy Home OBJECTIVE

A young couple in Morgantown, WV are looking to renovate their current one story home. They need a reasonable solution that is able to accomodate their kids whom are between the ages 9 and 14. Present a unique redesign for the whole house using inspirtation from the well-known designer, David Kleinberg.

SOLUTION

A local family of 5, in Morgantown, bought the house quickly about 9 years ago. Before they moved in there were multiple additions to it from previous owners. This made many of the ceiling and floor heights different as well as some unevenness on the floor. They are looking for ways to create more space, get rid of some of the clutter and maintain the feeling of being together while allowing everyone to have their own space when necessary. One of the biggest changes I made to the original floor plan was adding an addition where they currently have a small covered porch. They do not use the porch for anything but storage so I thought it would be great to expand that way for them. Another big change was moving the location of the ktichen and taking down a few walls. Since it is a ranch style home, all of the room are closed off by walls and some by doors. In order for them to get the feeling of having more space while not creating more space was to open up as many walls as possible.

Urban Loft OBJECTIVE

An interior plan and design for a graphic designer that has just moved in to the top floor of a historical apartment building. No consturctional changes to the outside as this is an apartment building, but plenty of room to create a loft if felt necessary.

SOLUTION

While Urban style was the main focus, this is still a home and needed to be functional, practical, and homey. This particular space tends to be soft and more comfortable looking compared to more industrial looking spaces. Although there were many size restrictions in this floor plan, it was crucial to leave it mostly open-concept. Keeping the bedroom space seperate from the kitchen, living, and home office space was the most important to me. Although urban designs are typically seen in large cities, when an interior is decorated as such, it shows off the softer side of the city. To some people, this may better help them appreciate where and how they are living.
