Full Fat Editor Welcome to the first edition of Fresh Milk magazine. To celebrate the uniqueness of the fashion graphics course at Southampton Solent University this magazine has been put together to showcase our talents as third year students. Milk is not only the title of the magazine, but is mirrored through out the content. We start by defining our year groups. Full fat being the final year, semi-skimmed second year and skimmed being first year. With the full fat contributors making up the body of the work within the magazine, we also showcase our second and first years online at www.freshmilkmagazine. co.uk. We finish by looking at some of our past students who discuss their new careers following their time at Solent. The theme of milk is reflected in the clean and quirky photography used to break up the dif fering styles of the student’s work, whilst holding the brand idea together. My fellow students have a huge array of talents in so many dif ferent mediums and I know we all wish each other well in our future careers. I hope you have as much fun browsing the magazine as I did as editor putting it together.

SUCCESS STORIES Here at Solent Southampton University, the Fashion Graphics course allows you to stretch your career path in many dif ferent directions; unlike other fashion or graphics related courses, which can of fer a very narrow field. Many graduates leave this course successfully starting their own business, travelling the fashion world, freelance designing and starting to work their way up within the fashion or graphics industry. With so many options for a career, this makes the course more exciting with having chances to experiment in a variety of techniques. This can influence your future employment and decisions to better suit each individual. Work experience is always encouraged to get a real feel for the working world. This course also works closely with dif ferent brands to experience live briefs and industry feedback. Here are a few examples of current students and graduates stories.

Dave Mohammed This is one of our semi-skimmed students (2nd year) he was lucky enough to intern at Urban Outfitter’s for a couple of months during the summer, and here is this story…

“ From working there, I learnt a lot of useful tips about working with the software, but the main thing I learnt, was that I am definitely working towards the perfect career for myself as I enjoyed my time there and the reward of seeing your designs in store made it all the more worthwhile.

When designing, I would be given a brief and was guided the best ways to approach this. I was then allowed freedom to begin doodling and look around on sites such as Pinterest for inspiration. I have kept in contact with the Urban, Outfitters though I haven’t really discussed any future plans of going back, they have said that if I need any help with anything, then they will be happy to help and possibly, if there isn’t an opportunity to return there, then they may have contacts elsewhere, which could be helpful for future internships.

Here is an example of a graduate from last year, and her business success.

“ The course for me was a major learning curve, not only about me

as a designer but also about myself. It allowed me to be completely creative and free with no boundaries as to what can be created and achieved with many different pathways I could follow. We explored a wide range of mediums from illustration, graphics, print design, branding, typography, editorial to photography, most of which are transferable to many other industries too. During my third year at Solent, I participated in a Creative Entrepreneurial Business Course and won a grant for my business idea. My ecofriendly brand/business is based around digital print design and will be selling festival accessories to a female market, inspired by nature and texture. I am now in the process of having my products manufactured and with two festivals confirmed, am hoping to start selling in the not too distant future. I am also Freelancing in Print Design and have had a few paid and unpaid project briefs to build up my portfolio and recommendations, as well as working part time. None of this would have been possible without my course and the tutors, so for this I am truly thankful.

Here’s another story from a recent graduate.

“ Making the decision to study fashion graphics was one of the best decisions I

could have made as it has allowed me to reach where I am now. The course allowed me to mould the curriculum around my leaning objectives. With this ethos I made a conscious effort in my learning’s to prepare myself later in life, such as building a fully rounded portfolio. Fashion graphics allowed me to experiment with design and photography without limits in ways that wouldn’t have been possible in other fashion related courses. Fashion graphics let me run with an idea from start to finish and that process has really helped my creative learning. One of the main benefits of the course is that people are unaware of what fashion graphics is about. I used to think this was a negative, yet I find myself explaining the course in detail every time someone has asked me what I studied and this isn’t something that many people have to do. Currently I am working for a catwalk photographer supplying ELLE UK and ELLE COLLECTIONS and I have been doing this for 4 seasons now. I am currently working on AW14 collections and with every season I get to travel to New York, Milan and Paris, along with working in London during show time. It’s a job that has allowed me to travel the fashion capitols of the world and see shows such as Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Diane Von Furstenberg. Of course it’s not all glamorous but occasionally you do feel like you are in a scene out of The Devil Wears Prada. My career within the fashion industry is still only at the beginning stages and my ethos is always optimistic, as you never know what maybe around the next corner.
