My graduate and undergraduate studies in landscape architecture, biological sciences and landscape technology have taught me more than the required design and field skills. 01 THE FORESTLINE

Reconnecting Fragmented Forests In Toronto Location: Toronto, ON. Course: Thesis Project Year: 2017 Advisor: Elise Shelley

Due to rapid city expansion and urbanization, natural forests in Toronto are fragmented and have lost ecological value. Remaining forests, located along the ravines, are isolated due to few eastwest connections. Current urban forestry practices are ineffective in establishing or preserving the ecological functions of forest ecosystems. This project redefines Toronto’s urban forest – establishing new guidelines and implementation strategies that increase biodiversity and restore disappearing ecological resources. The Beltline trail has been redesigned as a ‘forestline’ to demonstrate how an east-west corridor connecting fragmented ravine forest areas into a bigger system can re-establish forest function and diversity in the city.

02 RESPONSIVE TREADING Redesigning Humber Bay Park

Location: Humber Bay Park, Toronto, ON. Course: Landscape Design Studio Year: 2016 Partner: Suhanija Arullsothy

Humber Bay Park is a 42 hectare park along the Toronto Waterfront consisting of two engineered landforms extending into Lake Ontario. By rethinking the trajectory for the waterfront territory we were asked to develop a design strategy that would direct the park’s revitalization and integrate new types of multi-use spaces and facilities that meet the current, and projected, community needs. When first visiting Humber Bay Park, I noticed the circulations within the park and one connecting the surrounding areas are not successful for the park to meet the human and ecological demands. Through documenting and analyzing the impacts of existing circulations, our project proposes a new circulation path system that allows users to move through the park while encouraging a more robust ecology. Informed through path typology, the path system is able to adapt to the changing vegetation, program, and user type. In addition, our circulation strategy recognizes all users as being part of one large system, allowing interface moments of various intensities to exist throughout the park. Through responsive treading, impacts by increased park users can be mediated while providing users with a wide range of outdoor experiences.

03 POWERING A NEW HUMAN ECOLOGY Burlington Quarry Rehabilitation Location: Burlington Quarry, ON. Course: Landscape Design Studio Year: 2015 Partner: Sarah Ko

With depleting global oil reserves and an increasing pressure on governments to reduce carbon emissions, the world is on the cusp of an energy revolution - a renewable, local one. One of the biggest challenges for the Greater Toronto Area in the coming decades will be meeting the rapidly increasing demand for power that comes with population growth. This growth cannot come at the cost of degrading our natural resources, which makes the development of renewable energy more attractive and urgent than ever before. Situated at the edge of the Greenbelt and the growing cities of Milton and Burlington, the Burlington Quarry can play a vital role in the GTA’s transition to renewable local energy. The steady supply of fresh groundwater allows the site to host two of the most productive bio-energy systems in the world – fresh-water algae and wetland biocrops. These vigorous water-fed bio-systems can produce 10 times more energy than conventional biofuel crops, at a net benefit to the environment. By harnessing the water on the site, it is possible to design not only a rehabilitation site, but also one which can provide sustainable energy to 2500 homes in Burlington. The transformation of the quarry into the continent’s first Northern Bio-Energy Centre will also allow innovative research to be carried out on exciting new bio-fuels, and act as a catalyst for future energy projects across the region.

05 TRANQUILITY GARDEN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM/ WEDDING GARDEN

Location: Humber Arboretum, ON. Course: Landscape Design & Construction Year: 2014

Humber Arboretum is located behind Humber College’s North Campus. It consists of botanical gardens and natural areas that surround the Humber River. It not only provides a venue for environmental and outdoor education programs, but also for meetings, conferences, and weddings. The goal of this project was to design and build an outdoor classroom/ wedding garden that could accommodate 20–30 people while providing a unique and pleasurable experience to both the visitors and students. Being in a construction class, I had a great opportunity to apply my classroom knowledge to a practical setting that included surveying the site and designing and building the garden using different materials and techniques.

06 HUMBER RAIN GARDEN

RAIN GARDEN DESIGN & INSTALLATION Location: Humber Arboretum, ON. Course: Landscape Horticulture Practice Year: 2013

The course Sustainable Horticulture Practice assisted me to improve both my horticultural and problem-solving skills by exploring sustainable land management principles and practices. Topics taught in the course included low impact development, green infrastructures, trees in the urban environment, materials, and urban agriculture. As a case study, we were required to analyze the site, provide a planting design, and build a rain garden/vegetated swale near the pond located at Humber Arboretum to manage the overflow of storm water during the heavy rain season.



PLANTING DESIGN

• Design: River stones were placed along the base of the conveyance system, followed by planting plants that can tolerate persistent wet soil conditions along the edges of the river. Such plants included Iris, Itea virginica, Weigela florida, and Hydrangea quercifolia “Sikes Dwarf”. • Effectiveness: The site is functional and improves the aesthetic beauty of the area. The rain garden/ vegetative swale helps manage the overflow of rainwater from the pond through stormwater retention, attenuation, filtration, evaporation, and infiltration. It simply demonstrates how we can turn something as simple as stormwater into an artistic, sustainable display.

07 BUTTERNUT CONSERVATION/ RESEARCH Frances Ethel Thompson Butternut Conservation Initiative & Butternut Tree Propagation Research

Location: Humber Arboretum, ON. Type: Plant Research Year: 2013

The goal of this initiative is to help conserve the butternut tree, an endangered native tree species, which has been nearly decimated by a fungal disease called the butternut canker. To help conserve these important trees, the Humber Arboretum has partnered with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as Humber Research and the School of Applied Technology to plant and do research on butternut trees that have appeared to be resistant to this disease. I actively participated in the project by monitoring butternut trees and recording growth to help determine why some of these trees were resistant to the fungal disease. I also improved my organization and oral communication skills by presenting the research findings at a Frances Ethel Thompson Butternut Conservation Initiative event.

BUTTERNUT TREE PROPAGATION RESEARCH

The goal of the research was to propagate butternut trees through softwood cuttings and transplant them in nature to repopulate the endangered tree. The object of the study was to compare the success rates of four different rooting substrates (peat and perlite, sand, vermiculite, and Rockwool) and to compare the success rates of two different rooting formulations (IBA [indole-3-butyric acid] and NAA [naphthalene acetic acid]) in the rooting of butternut cuttings. Through the research, I gained valuable experience while reviewing academic journals, writing literature reviews, and writing research reports. The setting up and conducting of the experiment also helped me gain a lot of experience.
