Le Corbusier’s famous 1928 painting named “Three Bottles (Blue”. Le Corbusier was a Swiss-born French architect, painter, designer, and writer who played a big role in the rise of “modern architecture”. He worked primarily with geometrical elements that were represented in his works much like this painting.

Water Flowing
AAID 102_DF2 Water Containment
Initially, we restructured our paintings of choice and transformed them into a versions consiting of 20 shapes or more. Focusing on color and shape, they were the most prominent features that would further help explore the compositional structure within the painting. The colors varied from a degree of warm to cool which allowed for a consistent range throughout the artwork. Some of the shapes also resembled bottles and containers while others looked like they had an opening in something could flow through. These two different categories allowed for the detailed recognion of the configurations in which water, people, or space in general could harbor.

The Horai Onsen Bath House was created by Kengo Kuma and is located in Atami, Japan. It was built on a narrow steep slope and the area was taken advantage of cause of its condition and the preconcieved notion that nothing was able to be built there. The bath house is one continuous linear floor that consist of a changing rooms, a washing area, and a spa. The floor is made of Japanese Cypress Boards, roof is made of corrugated plastic, and is held up by square steel posts. The bath house as a whole is representative of old Japanese architecture challenging the ideals of modern architecture.

BATH HOUSE DESIGN
12
AAID 102_DF2
The site is on a cliff located within the NY Palisades along the bank of the Hudson river. The aquafir below the site will provide ample water to the Bathhouse. The site is abstracted as a solid cubic volume (pointing south) to maximize a variety of daily solar exposures. Across the river will provide a widescale view of Yonkers. Developed from the studies of color elements and shape configurations in Volumetric Vessals as well as the study of excavation of solid and void, the overall concept pertains to the relationship between static and dynamic vessals within the bath house. Static refers to the stable and grounded articles of the bath house which are represented through the actual pools. Dynamic refers to the free flowing articles in which are shown through the pathways/ rooms for different purposes between the pools. Furthermore, the pools seemed fitting to serve as the static vessels as they are meant for relaxation and peace, meanwhile the rooms and pathways exist between all the pools serve as the dynamic vessels as people are going to be constantly active, emphasizing the motion that will exist within those spaces. This bath house is meant for adults only that are in need of relaxation and a break from the stresses of daily life. The single direct pathway allows for navigating the bath house with ease allowing for maximum comfort at each space.

Utlizing light further enhanced my bath house and strengthened the inner concept. Following the June 20th Soltice where the sun rises in the east at 7am then sets in the west by 7pm. Beginning the journey within the bath house in the morning, the sun moves from east to west, the people will also move from east to west throughout the day. This would provide a superior experience as all the warmer baths would recieve sun at the maximum capacity within each vessel while it would conclude with the cold and plunge pool that do not recieve the same amount of light. The purpose of this is to connect temperature and feeling as cold pools are meant to retain more of a sharp feeling while the warmer pools tend to be more calm and comforting.

Color Palette Furthermore, color was also utilize to further emphasize the underlaying concept of the bath house. The colors composition of the original painting ranged from warm to cool as you can see within the color palette. To visualize this, warmer colors were applied to the static spaces in order to represent warmth and calmness while the cooler colors were more associated with movement and motivation. The cooler dynamic spaces were presented through the use of colored concrete as opposed to the warmer static spaces presented by different washes of wood to complement the color palette. 15

Within the bath house, three levels are executed that emphasize the pathway in which adults can easily travel throughout. They are meant to first enter throught the entrance, changing room, and the hot bath on the first floor. Then go down the stairs to the second floor where they will go through the bathroom and the warm pool. Finally, down the stairs to the third floor, they will enter the sauna, the lounging area, and cold bath/ plunge pool to terminate their journey.

Perspective-Entrance Represented is a close up of the entrance which is also a dynamic space created by an altered tube-like vessel. It is designed with an arrow -shaped panel all over the walls that are meant to be visually pleasing so that people become more attracted and desire to see the rest of the bath house. The walls are made of a blue colored concrete which is on the cooler side of my color palette. The panel helps to represent how the light changes throughout the day and produces a complexity of shadows on the ground. Entrance Lighting Gif: https://youtu.be/-QKI_kQVND4 21

Perspective-Changing Room Shown above is the changing room that is classified as a dynamic space. Multiple people are meant to be inside all at once doing different things including changing and packing away their things on the cubbies that are available on one side of the room. The walls are a light blue designed with colored concrete to further emphasize the distiction between the spaces. The panel located on the top of the vessel as the ceiling is an extruded diamond shape that creates an interesting composition between light and shadows that play on the relationship between light and dark. Perspective-Lounging Area Exhibited is The Lounging Area which is a buoyant meeting type area for people to be loud and socialize to the sounds of the upbeat music while getting a clear view of the river. This space is meant to raise your spirits a little after all the calming relaxation that the warmer pools have brought. The walls are purple made of colored concrete exisiting on the cooler side of the palette to further show that it is a dynamic space. The panels are extruded octogons with legs sticking out on the four sides to connect them all. This allows for a nice lighting pattern to effect the space as a well as provide a framed view of the river. Lounging Area Lighting Gif: https://youtu.be/cx-GqfkCYlU 25

Perspective-Sauna
Displayed above is the Sauna which is a loose and calm environment where visitors could utilize the steam to relax their muscles and increase blood circulation. It is a static space that allows for relaxation for the adults. The walls are on the warmer side being made of a lighter wash of wood further representing that it is a static space. There are two windows located near the middle of the room on both sides that bring in a subtle changing of light as the sun moves throughout the day. Perspective-Hot Bath
Pictured above is the hot bath in which people are allowed to relax and bask in the heated water and loosen their muscles. Within this space, there will not be much movement besides going in and out of the pool as it is meant for people to heal their bodies with hot water the pool has to offer. The walls are designed with a dark wash of wood and is on warmer side of the color palette to represent that it is a static space. There is also a ring window closer to the top of the room where it goes all around the pool allowing for light to come in on all sides at different times of the day. However this lighting change is very muted and will not cause much distruption to the visitors. Hot Bath Lighting Gif: https://youtu.be/0o9pFfQ8iO4 27

Perspective-Warm Bath
Expressed above is the warm bath which is the most popular pool because the water stays at a consistent and comfortable temperature that attracts people. The walls are designed with wood and is on warmer side of the color palette to represent that it is a static space. There is a big window at the front of the pool allowing visitors a view of the river creating a more serene and static environment. The window also allows for a constant changing of light that is nt overpowering to the visitors. Warm Bath Lighting Gif: https://youtu.be/ZasBAiFZdyU 28
