Recruiting Katz MBAs

Corporate Presentations

The University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business combines talented individuals with experience in cutting-edge business philosophies and education to offer you highly skilled full-time and internship candidates with the ability to add value to your organization from day one.

The race to attract and retain top MBA talent is becoming more intense every year, and having a strong presence on campus is critical to leading the pack. By participating in on-campus pre-recruiting activities such as corporate presentations, your organization can gain a competitive advantage.

Katz MBA students gain experience through team-based projects, which prepare them to be contributing members of your organization. In addition to acquiring team-building expertise, they realize the importance of group productivity and individual output. Katz students complete rigorous academic course work and develop strategic business viewpoints and technological and analytical problem-solving skills with the help of nationally recognized research scholars and educators.

Corporate presentations help to build student interest in your organization as well as give you the opportunity to interact with those students you may want to interview. MBA students want to learn about your company and the issues it’s facing as well as potential career paths; the recruiting process and what to expect during interviews; what qualities you are looking for in potential candidates; what it takes to succeed in the company and why; and information about the location, travel requirements, benefits, etc., of available positions.

The Career Services Center can arrange recruiting dates that accommodate your needs as well as those of Katz students. Recruiting for full-time candidates begins October 5, 2009, and ends December 11, 2009, for the fall semester. Recruiting for intern candidates begins (and continues for fulltime candidates) January 20, 2010, and ends April 16, 2010.

Who to Invite Corporate presentations are open to all students registered with the Career Services Center. You may request a targeted group of students (e.g., first years, second years, one-year students, or evening MBA students) depending on the type(s) of position(s) for which you are recruiting.

The Recruiting Process The following is an overview of the on-campus recruiting process.

Katz MBA students gain experience through team-based projects, which prepare them to be contributing members of your organization.

• The recruiter schedules a corporate presentation and/ or an on-campus interview date—including choosing a scheduling option and making necessary arrangements —by logging on to the Katz recruiting Web site at https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers. • The Career Services Center posts the corporate presentation on the Katz recruiting Web site, and students RSVP prior to the event. • The recruiter submits position description(s) to be posted in the system at least four weeks prior to the desired interview date. • The Career Services Center approves all position descriptions and creates an interview schedule. Positions typically are posted for a two-week period. • At the end of the posting period, the Career Services Center forwards cover letters and résumés to the recruiter’s designated contact. • The recruiter selects student candidates to interview and notifies the Career Services Center at least 10 days prior to the scheduled interview date. • The Career Services Center notifies student candidates. The final schedule is posted in the system three days prior to the interview date.

2

When to Schedule Corporate presentations begin September 14, 2009; run through December 11, 2009; and continue through the spring. We recommend holding a corporate presentation at least four weeks before you plan on interviewing candidates. This way, you have an opportunity to promote your company and available positions before students begin submitting résumés. Most corporate presentations are scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in one of the Mervis Hall classrooms. These classrooms are equipped with the latest in technology to suit your needs. Who Should Present? Hearing from representatives of different levels of management within your organization is a great way for MBA students to learn varying business viewpoints. These representatives include the following: • Members of senior-level management can discuss strategic direction. Their presence also indicates a commitment to, and interest in, the school. • Human resources representatives can describe the recruiting process from start to finish. • Recent hires, especially Katz alumni, can provide helpful insights concerning their career decision-making process as well as a typical day on the job and information on career tracks.

Where to Park For your convenience, we have guest parking passes for the Wesley W. Posvar Hall parking garage, which is located on Roberto Clemente Drive directly across the street from Mervis Hall. When you arrive at the garage, the parking lot attendant will provide you with a temporary placard. Please display it on your dashboard and dispose of it when you leave. 3

On-Campus Recruiting Pre-Interview Receptions Held the evening before on-campus interviews, pre-interview receptions enable recruiters to further explain available positions and to discuss their company, career tracks, etc., leaving more time to learn about candidates during the interviews. Pre-interview receptions usually are considered part of the interviewing process. Who to Invite Pre-interviewing receptions involve those students interviewing the next day. When to Schedule Pre-interview receptions typically are scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. Where to Hold To provide a more formal atmosphere or to accommodate large groups, some companies elect to hold their pre-interview receptions at Oakland-area restaurants, the Holiday Inn, or the University Club. The Career Services Center staff will be happy to make the arrangements for you. Interview Day The Career Services Center is located in Mervis Hall, Suite 301 (see page 16 for directions and page 17 for a campus map). Upon arrival, you will receive your schedule and candidate résumés. The Career Services Center staff will be available to answer questions and assist you with any needs you have concerning the University, the Career Services Center, and/or Katz students. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Parking For your convenience, we have guest parking passes for the Wesley W. Posvar Hall parking garage, which is located on Roberto Clemente Drive directly across the street from Mervis Hall. When you arrive at the garage, the parking lot attendant will provide you with a temporary placard. Please display it on your dashboard and dispose of it when you leave. Lunch A Career Services Center staff member will be your host for lunch. Lunches are catered and typically are held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Student Evaluations We ask that you complete a brief evaluation form for each student. These forms will be included with the packet you receive when you arrive on campus. A Career Services Center staff member will meet with you briefly at the end of the day to discuss the candidates. Your feedback is invaluable!

Additional Recruitment Options The most direct and effective way to reach MBA students is through on-campus recruiting; however, here are some additional options to consider when you are looking to fill immediate openings: • Job postings. Students or alumni can apply online or via an e-mail address you provide. Log in at https://katz-pitt-csm. symplicity.com/employers and post your open positions directly to our Web site. If you do not have an account, please visit the site to register. • Résumé books. Résumé books are searchable at https://katz-pitt-csm .symplicity.com/employers, and the Career Services Center also partners with MBAFocus. Both resources allow you to search résumés based on criteria, including industry and functional preferences, pre-MBA work experience, and undergraduate majors. • Video conferencing. Please contact Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510 or caevans@katz.pitt.edu for more information about video conferencing options.

5

On-Campus Recruiting Checklist n Schedule an interview date. Complete a request form to schedule an on-campus recruiting event by logging on to the Katz recruiting Web site: https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers • Fall recruiting for full-time candidates begins October 5, 2009, and runs through December 11, 2009. • Spring recruiting for intern candidates begins (and continues for full-time candidates) on January 20, 2010, and ends April 16, 2010.

If you do not have an existing account, please visit this Web site to register. We encourage companies to schedule their interview date by September 2009.

n Choose a scheduling option. The Career Services Center offers employers four types of scheduling options. • Pre-screen schedule The pre-screen schedule is one in which students submit cover letters and résumés for a posted position. The Career Services Center forwards the cover letters and résumés to the recruiter who selects the students he/she wishes to interview, and those selected are invited to interview. This is the most popular scheduling option.

Consulting Field Projects offer MBA students practical business experience prior to graduation while providing invaluable project assistance to participating businesses. Under the supervision of the world-class Katz faculty and in partnership with McKinsey & Company, students apply the tools and skills they learn in the classroom to solve real-world business problems as consultants to organizations ranging in size from Fortune 100 companies to innovative start-ups. Student teams present their Consulting Field Projects as part of the prestigious McKinsey Cup Competition at the end of the term. If you are interested in getting a fresh perspective on an actual ongoing project in your organization, please contact Bud Smith at 412-741-6497 or budsmith@pitt.edu.

Guest Speakers

• Mixed schedule A mixed schedule is a combination of the above options—for example, half pre-screened and half open. • Video conferencing available

Mock Interview Day

n Post the job and/or internship description(s). A detailed job description is an essential tool for attracting highly desirable MBA candidates. You may post the job and/or internship description(s) as soon as your on-campus recruiting event has been confirmed. All position descriptions should contain the following information: • Position title • Preferred interview scheduling option (see above) • Name, title, address, and e-mail address of the person to whom cover letters and résumés will be forwarded • Position description • Desired qualifications • Citizenship requirements, if applicable • MBA functional area, if applicable (Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Information Systems, Operations, Strategic Planning) • Industry • Undergraduate degree(s) required, if applicable • Geographic location of position

n Make arrangements to park on campus. For your convenience, we have guest parking passes for the Wesley W. Posvar Hall parking garage, which is located on Roberto Clemente Drive directly across the street from Mervis Hall. Please refer to page 17 for a campus map. 6

Consulting Field Projects

Katz faculty members often seek out recruiting partners to serve as guest speakers and lend a functional perspective or present a business case that is relevant to their course’s curriculum. If you would like the opportunity to serve as a guest speaker in the classroom, please contact Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510 or caevans@katz.pitt.edu, and she will direct you to the appropriate faculty member.

• Open schedule An open schedule is one in which interview slots are awarded to all interested students.

Corporate Visibility

One of the most well-attended events on campus, Mock Interview Day allows participating recruiters the opportunity to promote their companies to current MBA students before on-campus recruiting officially begins. In turn, students have the opportunity to interact with recruiters one on one while practicing their interview skills. After a mock interview, students receive invaluable feedback from their interviewers about what their strengths are and how they can improve. This critical feedback is just one of the many professional development components that the Career Services Center uses to help build stronger, more effective candidates for your future employment opportunities. If you wish to participate in Mock Interview Day, please contact Dana C. Romano at 412-648-1598 or dcromano@katz.pitt.edu.

Katz students have conducted Consulting Field Projects with some of the following organizations: Allegheny County American Eagle Outfitters The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation Bayer Corporation FedEx GENCO GlaxoSmithKline HM Insurance Group NOVA Chemicals Philips Respironics UPMC Westinghouse Electric Company

Discover Your Career in Business In the comprehensive, highly interactive course Discover Your Career in Business, students learn MBA-level job search skills and strategies. Employers have the opportunity to participate as guest speakers and meet some of the top students seeking internships. To be a guest speaker for Discover Your Career in Business, please contact Dana C. Romano at 412-648-1598 or dcromano@katz.pitt.edu. 7

Career Clubs Career clubs are a highly effective vehicle for marketing your organization to a specific group of MBA students. Employers are invited to participate in a Lunch and Learn with one or more Katz career clubs to discuss potential MBA career paths and share advice on obtaining a position and/or leveraging the MBA to advance in the business world. To participate in a Lunch and Learn session or to partner with a career club, please contact the designated club leader below.

Benefits of Hiring International Students

• Familiarity and understanding of American business practices and theories learned through the MBA program

International students who are in the United States as F-1 or J-1 students (nonimmigrants) generally are eligible to apply for student work authorization once they complete their academic program/studies, provided that they secure the necessary authorization before beginning employment. Work authorization and authorization procedures can vary according to the student’s immigration visa.

There is no cost to the employer for hiring international students for part-time or full-time CPT or OPT.

Employment Not Requiring Sponsorship Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) is defined as employment that is an integral part of the student’s academic program or an established curriculum and provides hands-on practical work experience (e.g., internship). Full-time Internship Students must have completed one academic year before they are eligible to participate in a summer internship. They may work off campus for more than 20 hours per week and do not have to be enrolled in academic classes. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary full-time employment after graduation that is directly related to the student’s field of study. It requires authorization by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The standard OPT period is the maximum 12 months. Students must obtain permission from the University of Pittsburgh Office of International Services and receive an employment authorization document (EAD) from USCIS. Employment can begin upon receipt of the EAD.

Guidelines and Policies Recruiter Expectations

The Katz Career Services Center strives to provide best-in-class service to recruiting partners and MBA students. To that end, we ask that all parties adhere to the following guidelines and policies.

Career Services Staff

Recruiters are expected to act with integrity throughout the interview process and follow up with all candidates regarding the status of their candidacy in a timely manner. All recruiters, whether on or off campus, should give students until: • December 31, 2009, or three weeks, whichever is longer, to respond to a full-time job offer.

Students are expected to sign up in advance for career-related events in the On-Target online database and arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of all events. Students who are repeated no-shows could lose their Career Services Center privileges.

Melissa Kantrowitz

Charmaine Evans

Assistant Director, MBA Career Services

Recruiting Manager, MBA Career Services

Students are expected to honor all on- and off-campus interview commitments (including adequately preparing in advance for the interview). Any cancellations must occur more than two business days prior to the scheduled interview.

412-648-7263 | mfkantrowitz@katz.pitt.edu

412-648-1510 | caevans@katz.pitt.edu

• February 15, 2010, or two weeks, whichever is longer, to respond to an internship offer. Students can accept or reject offers prior to the specified deadlines but cannot be compelled to do so. Companies should not encourage students to renege on previously accepted job or internship offers or to rescind offers they have previously extended to our students; doing so could result in the loss of on-campus recruiting privileges. Companies scheduling out-of-town interviews should give students five business days’ notice. Companies are asked to provide updates on offers made, offers accepted, and salaries offered to Charmaine Evans, the recruiting manager, at caevans@katz.pitt.edu. This assists the Career Services Center in preparing an accurate employment report at the end of each recruiting year.

Student Expectations

The University of Pittsburgh is committed to the advancement of learning and service to society. This is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility, selfrestraint, concern for others, and academic integrity. By choosing to join the University community, our students accept the obligation to live by these common values and commit themselves to the principles as outlined by the University of Pittsburgh Honor Code.

No-shows, or students who cancel inside of the two business day window (excluding in the event of a medical or personal emergency), automatically will have their Career Services Center privileges suspended, pending review by the assistant dean for MBA career services. Students must submit a letter of apology to the recruiter and to the Career Services Center for review within 24 hours of the infraction. Students are expected to report all job and internship offers and acceptances to the Career Services Center and to discontinue interviewing immediately after accepting an offer (verbally or in writing). Students who renege on job or internship offers could lose their Career Services Center privileges.
