Positions typically are posted for a two-week period. • At the end of the posting period, the Career Services Center forwards cover letters and résumés to the recruiter’s designated contact. • The recruiter selects student candidates to interview and notifies the Career Services Center at least 10 days prior to the scheduled interview date. • The Career Services Center notifies student candidates. The final schedule is posted in the system three days prior to the interview date.
The Career Services Center can arrange recruiting dates that accommodate your needs as well as those of Katz students. Recruiting for full-time candidates begins October 4, 2010, and ends December 10, 2010, for the fall semester. Recruiting for internship candidates begins (and resumes for full-time candidates) January 19, 2011, and ends April 22, 2011.
The Recruiting Process The following is an overview of the on-campus recruiting process. • The recruiter schedules a corporate presentation and/or an on-campus interview date (including choosing a scheduling option and making necessary arrangements) by logging in to the Katz recruiting Web site at https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers.

Recruiting Katz MBAs (continued) Additional Recruitment Options
The race to attract and retain top MBA talent is becoming more intense every year, and having a strong presence on campus is critical to leading the pack. By participating in on-campus recruiting activities, such as corporate presentations and on-campus interviewing, your organization can gain a competitive advantage.
Corporate Presentations Corporate presentations help to build student interest in your organization as well as give you the opportunity to interact with those who you may want to interview. MBA students want to learn about your company and the issues it’s facing as well as potential career paths; the recruiting process and what to expect during interviews; what qualities you are looking for in potential candidates; what it takes to succeed in the company and why; and information about the location, travel requirements, benefits, etc., of available positions.
Who Should Present? Representatives of different levels of management within your organization can provide MBA students with a firsthand look at varying business viewpoints. These representatives include: • Members of senior-level management, who can discuss strategic direction. Their presence also indicates a commitment to, and interest in, the school. • Human resources representatives, who can describe the recruiting process from start to finish. • Recent hires, especially Katz alumni, who can provide helpful insights concerning their career decision-making process and information on career tracks.
On-Campus Recruiting The Career Services Center is located in Mervis Hall, Suite 301 (see page 16 for directions and page 17 for a campus map). Upon arrival, you will receive your schedule and candidates’ résumés. The Career Services Center staff will be available to answer questions and assist you with any needs you have concerning the University, the Career Services Center, and/or Katz students. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Lunch A Career Services Center staff member will be your host for lunch. Lunches are catered and typically are held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Student Evaluations We ask that you complete a brief evaluation of each student. A feedback form will be included with the packet you receive when you arrive on campus. A Career Services Center staff member will meet with you briefly at the end of the day to discuss the candidates.
4
The most direct and effective way to reach MBA students is through on-campus recruiting; however, here are some additional options to consider when you are looking to fill immediate openings: • Job postings. Students or alumni can apply online or via an e-mail address you provide. Log in at https:// katz-pitt-csm.symplicity. com/employers and post your open positions directly to our Web site. If you do not have an account, please visit the site to register. • Résumé books. Résumé books are searchable at https://katz-pitt-csm. symplicity.com/employers, and the Career Services Center also partners with MBAFocus, https://www.mbaselect. com/pittsburgh.aspx. Both resources allow you to search résumés based on criteria such as industry and functional preferences, pre-MBA work experience, and undergraduate majors. • Video conferencing. Please contact Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510 or caevans@katz.pitt.edu for more information about video conferencing options. 5
Corporate Visibility Katz students have conducted Consulting Field Projects with these and other organizations: Allegheny County American Eagle Outfitters BNY Mellon Corporation Bayer AG FedEx GENCO GlaxoSmithKline HM Insurance Group NOVA Chemicals Philips Respironics UPMC Westinghouse Electric Company
Consulting Field Projects Consulting Field Projects offer MBA students practical business experience prior to graduation while providing invaluable project assistance to participating businesses. Under the supervision of the world-class Katz faculty and in partnership with McKinsey & Company, students apply the tools and skills they learn in the classroom to solve real-world business problems as consultants to organizations ranging in size from innovative start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. Student teams present their Consulting Field Projects as part of the prestigious McKinsey Cup Competition at the end of the term. If you are interested in getting a fresh perspective on an actual ongoing project in your organization, please contact Bud Smith at 412-741-6497 or budsmith@pitt.edu.
Guest Speakers Katz faculty members often seek out recruiting partners to serve as guest speakers and lend a functional perspective or present a business case that is relevant to their academic areas. If you would like the opportunity to serve as a guest speaker in the classroom, please contact Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510 or caevans@katz.pitt.edu, and she will direct you to the appropriate faculty member.
Mock Interview Day One of the most well-attended events on campus, Mock Interview Day allows participating recruiters to promote their companies to current MBA students before on-campus recruiting officially begins. In turn, students have the opportunity to interact with recruiters one on one while practicing their interview skills. After a mock interview, students receive invaluable feedback from their interviewers about their strengths and how they can improve. This feedback is just one of the many professional development components that the Career Services Center uses to help build stronger, more effective candidates for your future employment opportunities. If you wish to participate in Mock Interview Day, please contact Dana C. Romano at 412-648-1598 or dcromano@katz.pitt.edu.

Diversity Initiatives The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business strives to create an environment in which exposure to diverse ideas and differences can generate true global thinking. One of its primary goals is to foster students’ ability to embrace diversity and work effectively with others.
Partners
Diversity gives every member of the school an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to succeed in a challenging and complex global business environment. Toward that end, Katz seeks to enroll men and women who represent different nationalities, ethnicities, religions, backgrounds, and political persuasions and who possess diverse pre-MBA work and/or military experience as well as exposure to other disciplines besides business.
Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Pittsburgh Chapter The Pittsburgh chapter identifies and refers ALPFA members for admission to the full-time MBA program.
In order to best prepare students to contribute to the ever-changing face of global business, Katz has sought to create a diverse student body by partnering with organizations that will assist Katz and its corporate partners with meeting their recruiting needs.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Katz has a tradition of recruiting qualified graduates from such HBCUs as Howard University, Hampton University, Morgan State University, Virginia State University, and Florida A&M University. Katz also actively recruits graduates of Cheyney and Lincoln universities in Pennsylvania.
National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), Pittsburgh Chapter The Pittsburgh chapter assists Katz with identifying and referring candidates to the full-time MBA program.
National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) Katz is a member of the NSHMBA University Partnership Program, which identifies and refers applicants to the full-time MBA program.
Additional Resources Fattah Conference on Higher Education Chaka Fattah, a former state senator and current congressman representing Pennsylvania’s Second District, designed the two-day Fattah Conference on Higher Education in an effort to increase enrollment of underrepresented students in graduate and professional schools. Minorities in Pittsburgh Conference Sponsored and planned by the Roberto Clemente Minority Business Association, the Minorities in Pittsburgh Conference provides corporations and Katz with direct access to top students with diverse backgrounds and majors. 8
Kristina Badali
Undergraduate Experience: Pennsylvania State University Bachelor of Science, Information Sciences and Technology, 2005 Pre-MBA Employment: Technology Consultant Deloitte Consulting LLP; Pittsburgh, Pa. Internship: Deloitte Consulting LLP “Because business is always changing, it is important for leaders to be dynamic and to continue to seek ways to grow and advance their knowledge. Working toward my MBA and MS in Management of Information Systems degrees at Katz has helped me to build and strengthen my management and professional skills. In addition, it has allowed me to explore outside opportunities that I may not have had the chance to do, including working with nonprofit organizations and studying abroad at the European Business School. When I return to full-time employment, I know I will have an enhanced business background that will aid my future endeavors.” 9
Employing International Students International students who are in the United States as an F-1 or J-1 student (nonimmigrant) are generally eligible to apply for student work authorization upon completion of their academic program or studies, provided that they secure the necessary authorization before beginning employment.
Employment Not Requiring Sponsorship Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is defined as employment that is an integral part of the student’s academic program or established curriculum and that provides hands-on practical work experience. Students must have completed one academic year before they are eligible to participate in a summer internship and can work off campus for more than 20 hours a week. They do not need to be enrolled in academic classes. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary full-time employment after a student’s graduation that is directly related to the student’s field of study. It requires authorization by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The standard OPT period is for a maximum of 12 months. A student must obtain permission from the University’s Office of International Services and receive an employment authorization document (EAD) from USCIS. Employment can begin upon receipt of the EAD. There is NO cost to the employer for hiring international students for part-time or full-time CPT or OPT.
Employment Requiring Sponsorship H-1B Visa The H-1B visa program is the primary method for employers to recruit and hire international students and professionals in specialty occupations to work in the United States. Typically, a worker can have an H-1B visa for an initial period of up to three years. However, the initial H-1B visa can be extended one time for a combined maximum of six years. 10
KATZPORT The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business has an immigration attorney on retainer to facilitate the H-1B visa process for our international students. This attorney represents both the employer and the employee in the H-1B process. Katz covers all attorney fees associated with filing for an H-1B visa.
Standard Filing Fee: For the I-129 petition $320 ACWIA (Training) Fee: To fund training $1,500* of U.S. workers Fraud Fee: Required for the initial $500 H-1B petition or to switch employers Optional fee for premium processing: $1,000 Decisions are made within 15 business days. *Employers with fewer than 25 full-time employees must only pay one-half of the required training fee, which is $750. The following are exempt from the training fee: primary or secondary educational institutions, institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations related to or affiliated with any institutions of higher education, a nonprofit organization that engages in established curriculum-related clinical training of students registered at any institutions of higher education, nonprofit research organizations, and governmental research organizations.

Internship: Strategic Intern Bayer AG “Coming from a nonbusiness background, the courses I completed during my first year at Katz helped me to better understand the business landscape and how to approach problems in an analytical manner. Additionally, I was able to incorporate what I learned in the classroom through the experience-based learning initiative, which truly enhanced my MBA experience. During a Consulting Field Project, I led a team to evaluate and make recommendations designed to improve business development at a construction services company. This opportunity, in conjunction with my strategy course work, prepared me to be successful during my summer internship with Bayer.”

Guidelines and Policies The Katz Career Services Center strives to provide best-in-class service to recruiting partners and MBA students. To that end, we ask that all parties adhere to the following guidelines and policies.
Recruiter Expectations
Recruiters are expected to act with integrity throughout the interview process and to follow up with all candidates regarding the status of their candidacy in a timely manner. All recruiters, whether on or off campus, should give students until: • December 31, 2010, or three weeks, whichever is longer, to respond to a full-time job offer. • February 14, 2011, or two weeks, whichever is longer, to respond to an internship offer. Students can accept or reject offers prior to the specified deadlines, but should not be compelled to do so.
Companies should not encourage students to renege on previously accepted job or internship offers or rescind offers they have previously extended to our students; doing so could result in the loss of on-campus recruiting privileges.
Students are expected to sign up in advance for careerrelated events in the On-Target online system and arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of all events. Students who are repeated no-shows could lose their Career Services Center privileges.
Companies scheduling out-of-town interviews should give students five business days’ notice.
Students are expected to honor all on- and offcampus interview commitments, including adequately preparing in advance for the interview. Any cancellations must occur more than two business days prior to the scheduled interview.
Companies are asked to provide updates via e-mail on offers made and accepted or declined, as well as salary information, to Charmaine Evans, recruiting manager, at caevans@katz.pitt.edu. This assists the Career Services Center in preparing an accurate employment report at the end of each recruiting year.
Student Expectations
The University of Pittsburgh is committed to the advancement of learning and service to society. This is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility, self-restraint, concern for others, and academic integrity. By choosing to join the University community, our students accept the obligation to live by these common values and commit themselves to the principles as outlined by the University of Pittsburgh Honor Code.
No-shows, or students who cancel inside of the two business day window (excluding in the event of a medical or personal emergency), will have their Career Services Center privileges suspended, pending review by the assistant dean for MBA career services. Students must submit a letter of apology to the recruiter and to the Career Services Center for review within 24 hours of the infraction. Students are expected to report all job and internship offers and acceptances to the Career Services Center and to discontinue interviewing immediately after accepting an offer (verbally or in writing). Students who renege on job or internship offers could lose their Career Services Center privileges.

On-Campus Recruiting Checklist n Schedule an interview date. Complete a request form to schedule an on-campus recruiting event by logging in to the Katz recruiting Web site: https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers • Fall recruiting for full-time candidates begins October 4, 2010, and ends December 10, 2010. • Spring recruiting for internship candidates begins (and resumes for full-time candidates) January 19, 2011, and ends April 22, 2011.
If you do not have an existing account, please visit the above Web site to register or call Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510. We encourage companies to schedule their interview date by August 30, 2010.
n Choose a scheduling option. The Career Services Center offers employers four types of scheduling options. • Prescreen schedule: The prescreen schedule is one in which students submit cover letters and résumés for a posted position. The Career Services Center forwards the cover letters and résumés to the recruiter, who selects the students he/she wishes to interview, and those selected are invited to interview. This is the most popular scheduling option. • Open schedule: An open schedule is one in which interview slots are awarded to all interested students. • Mixed schedule: A mixed schedule is a combination of the above options—for example, half prescreened and half open. • Video conferencing n Post the job and/or internship description(s). A detailed job description is an essential tool for attracting highly desirable MBA candidates. You may post the job and/or internship description(s) as soon as your on-campus recruiting event has been confirmed.
All position descriptions should contain the following information: • Position title • Preferred interview scheduling option • Name, title, address, and e-mail address of the person to whom cover letters and résumés will be forwarded • Position description • Desired qualifications • Citizenship requirements, if applicable • MBA functional area, if applicable (Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Information Systems, Operations, or Strategy) • Industry • Undergraduate degree(s) required, if applicable • Geographic location of position
n Schedule a pre-interview reception. Held the evening before on-campus interviews, pre-interview receptions enable recruiters to further explain available positions and to discuss their company, career tracks, etc., leaving more time to learn about candidates during the interviews. Pre-interview receptions are usually considered part of the interviewing process. • Who to Invite: Pre-interview receptions are for those students interviewing the next day. • When to Schedule: Pre-interview receptions typically are scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. or from 6 to 7:30 p.m. • Where to Hold: Mervis Hall is the most popular choice. To provide a more formal atmosphere or to accommodate large groups, some companies elect to hold their pre-interview receptions at Oakland-area restaurants or the University Club. The Career Services Center staff will be happy to make the arrangements for you.
