Friday, August 15, 2008 8 a.m.–1 p.m. REQUIRED PROGRAM

Undergraduate Orientation Session: Day 1

William Pitt Union Assembly Room, Main Floor This is a required program for new international students.

Join the staff of the Office of International Services (OIS) as you start your life here at the University of Pittsburgh. During the first day of this program, we will check you in so you can register for classes. We also will go over such topics as banking in the United States, health insurance, academic success, and transportation.

Shopping at Target

Board buses outside the Pittsburgh Athletic Association (Free bus service will run continually from Bigelow Boulevard to the Waterfront.)

Don’t buy it at home and travel with it all the way to Pittsburgh. Knowing you’ll have the chance to shop at Target surely will make your move to Pitt more enjoyable and your luggage a little lighter. 4:30–7 p.m.

Chinese Student Welcome Reception

Hosted by the Chinese Student and Scholar Association William Pitt Union Ballroom, Main Floor

All interested Chinese students are welcome to stop by and enjoy refreshments with the Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA). 7–10 p.m.

Forward Lanes—The Office of International Services will direct you to this location.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This event is free to new international students.

Join OIS staff members and volunteers, and enjoy an American pastime—bowling! Bowling is a fun group activity that requires no previous experience to enjoy.

Go on a fun–filled trip through Pittsburgh in a vintage amphibious vehicle that is able to drive on land and into water.

Office of International Services Picnic Meet up with all incoming international students, graduate and undergraduate, for a fun and informal American-style picnic dinner. We will provide dinner, games, music, and activities, so come and join in the fun! This event is free to new international students and their families.

During the second day of this program, we will introduce you to such topics as culture shock, roommate and residence life concerns, the Outside the Classroom Curriculum, and much more. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This event is free to new international students.

Pitt Olympics Cathedral Lawn

Don’t just watch the Beijing Olympics on television; come participate in your own Olympic Games right here on campus. The Pitt Olympics, hosted by the Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development (CCLD), will feature sports and activities from the Olympic Games as well as a few of Pitt’s very own events. After the games and activities have ended, you will be treated to food, beverages, and a chance to meet with staff and student leaders of CCLD. This is an exciting event open to all new international graduate and undergraduate students. 7:30–10 p.m.

Movie: August Rush (PG) Schenley Park, Flagstaff Hill

Take a walk to Schenley Park with OIS staff and volunteers, and enjoy a movie under the starry Oakland sky. This is a movie event not to miss. Don’t forget to bring something to sit on, such as a blanket, towel, or small chair.

Meet in the Cathedral of Learning Gift and Information Center, First Floor

Let your mind travel to 27 countries in one hour when you tour the University’s Nationality Classrooms, located on the first and third floors of the Cathedral of Learning. These internationally famous rooms are gifts to the University from Pittsburgh’s ethnic groups. Quo Vadis, Pitt student guides who are familiar with the historical figures, myths, art, and events depicted in the rooms will lead the tours.

Heinz Memorial Chapel Tour

Meet at Heinz Chapel, across the lawn from the Cathedral of Learning

Heinz Chapel is the University’s campus chapel, a gift from Henry John Heinz, founder of the H.J. Heinz Co., and his children. This historic landmark is a vital part of the University community—open to campus religious groups of all denominations—and is a popular site for tours, weddings, and concerts. The neo-Gothic structure features 23 exquisite stained glass windows depicting 391 sacred and secular figures. 2–2:15 p.m.

Established in 1920, the Lantern Night ceremony is the oldest University tradition. Alumnae pass the light of learning and inspiration, in the form of lanterns, to first-year women. The lanterns represent those used at the time of the founding of the University. First-year men, families, and guests are invited to attend this special event.

We now are taking this commitment to developing important life skills to a new level by providing an intentional, manageable way to navigate the student journey, starting in the fall of 2008 with the unveiling of the Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC). On Wednesday, August 20, two special orientation sessions will be held in the evening to provide students and parents details about this exciting new program.

What is the Outside the Classroom Curriculum? The Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC) is a Universitywide initiative designed to educate the whole student through completion of a series of programs, activities, and experiences that complement each student’s academic studies.

Derived from the provost’s goals for University of Pittsburgh graduates, the curriculum engages students in the process of growing in nine key areas each year by intentionally and progressively completing various learning experiences outside the classroom. These areas include:

OCC Gives Pitt Students an Edge upon Graduation Students who complete the requirements of the program will receive an OCC “transcript” that documents achievements outside the classroom, as well as a special green cord to wear at graduation. These distinguished students will be able to confidently articulate and demonstrate tangible accomplishments that they achieved during their collegiate career. Students who complete OCC are likely to succeed in the highly competitive job market, gain acceptance into graduate or professional schools, as well as develop other character traits and life skills that are highly desirable.
