NAMES, IDENTITY, AND HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Aurora’s
Chicken & Grill
During the time of the U.S. Navy occupation of Vieques, the beaches were renamed based on colored flags placed on them for training exercises. Set in motion by elders and community leaders from Vieques the effort is underway to reclaim the former names of the beaches and restore their cultural significance and longevity. Internet sites and publications still use the Navy names of beaches and you will hear many islanders still using the English names as well. But while you are here, please paint the mental map in your mind with the original Spanish names. The English names are listed below for your reference to the pull out map on the inside back cover. Thank you for participating in this milestone effort by honoring and using the original Spanish names of the beautiful beaches of Vieques.

safety tips Many visitors think that Vieques is a sleepy, laid back island where you can lay in your hammock on the beach without a care in the world. For the most part, this is true. But petty theft is everywhere and your vacation can end badly without some precaution and common sense. Follow some safety tips and always be aware of your surroundings and belongings.

ALWAYS lock the doors where you are staying. Period. First floor, second floor, every door.
DON’T leave a cell phone or iPad charging next to an open window. Never leave house keys next to a window.
DON’T take valuables to the beach.
NEVER leave valuables unattended.
DON’T lock your car at the beach. Leave it open with nothing in it.
USE COMMON SENSE when walking around at night. Never walk on the beaches alone after dark.

PUBLISHER / EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR WEB MASTER 2017 year of the rooster
L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I TO R
Happy New Year and welcome to Vieques! According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2017 is the year of the rooster (and the humor is not lost on us islanders). We do, in fact, have a lot to crow about, like the fact that the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay, one of nature’s finest gifts, is part of Vieques. So it’s worth getting up with the sun (and the roosters) to absorb every minute on the island. Spend a few days with your toes in the sand, the sun on your face (with spf 50 of course), and let strangers become friends. Take a tour on the Bioluminescent bay and note your shift in consciousness. If you are escaping the frigid temperatures of the north the ocean will feel just right. Average winter water temps in the high 70s can do that, although the island residents don’t swim much in the winter. They say it’s “too cold.” Okay, we’re spoiled. With the new year at hand, I will certainly park myself in a beach chair with my toes in the sand and reflect on the year past and the one to come. More hard work ahead certainly, but that’s why we’re here. That’s why the team at Vieques Insider can relate to the rooster, because when there is something important to say -we shout it out! We want you to know the beauty and charm of Vieques. We have a core belief that pride in a community inspires a better future, and we love to spread the word. It’s our job! So don’t mind the roosters. They’re just doing their job. Enjoy our magazine, that’s us doing our job. While you’re here, get up and enjoy the day. That’s your job! Kelly Thompson 18

Pincho madness! The Caribbean Pincho is usually pork, shark, chicken or beef skewered with a really long wooden toothpick, grilled to perfection and then slathered with barbeque sauce. Topped off with a slice of pan de agua (Puerto Rican version of French bread), it is served simply on the stick and wrapped in tin foil. It is the quintessential “finger food”.

WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED DRINKING THE COCONUT WATER, ASK THE VENDOR TO CUT THE COCONUT IN HALF FOR THE SWEET MEAT INSIDE. A SLICE OF THE OUTSIDE HUSK MAKES A PERFECT SPOON!
SAMUEL AND PAPO, FATHER SON TEAM BY MARGO CHENEY
cocotero is a person who works with coconuts, harvesting, selling and cutting them with a machete to get to the nutritious liquid inside. The liquid, called water, has a sweet, nutty taste and is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and enzymes! Getting it fresh right from the tree is a rare opportunity to take advantage of while on Vieques. Being a cocotero requires skill. I recently observed a local cocotero team, Samuel, and his father, Papo, harvesting coconuts in a practiced, organized manner. Samuel arrived with a well sharpened machete and climbing gear, the same used by telephone pole climbers. Samuel cinched his belt around the tree and himself around the waist and carefully made his way to the top. As Samuel climbed, Papo placed a foam mattress at the base of the tree for the coconuts to land on then got out of the way of the falling nuts.
A few deft strikes with his machete and Samuel rained down coconuts! Returning to the ground, Samuel then demonstrated additional machete skills as he chopped off the top of the coconut, added a straw and offered the perfect drinking vessel. And it is not just the water inside that has health benefits. Green coconut meat is extremely good for you. Your cocotero can show you how to access the meat of the nut, even creating a spoon from the outer shell. Like Samuel and Papo’s stand in Esperanza, most roadside stands are not always open. When you see a cocotero open, take the opportunity to get this delicious treat. n ......................................................................... Do not attempt to harvest your own as it is dangerous. It is also prohibited on some areas of the island and can carry a hefty fine.

Despite the Navy’s departure, evidence of their stay still remains. But continue farther and you will see, facing away from the main road onto service roads, large numbers of barrel-arched, earth covered bunkers of a type the Navy used between 1928 and the ‘80s (and sometimes after). When introduced, they were popularly known as “igloo magazines”, designed to explode upwards, not outwards, reducing the chance of “sympathetic explosions” of other nearby structures. They face away from the main road for the same reason. Fill Up or Top Off! The two gas stations on the island can run out of gas if deliveries are delayed. The gas trucks come on the ferry so it can be a long wait if you run out. So if the lines at the station are not long, stop in. When it is busy the lines form in one direction only and sometimes go around the block. If you see an empty spot at the pump, before pulling in, check to see if there is a line coming from the opposite direction. Go with cash; they don’t take debit or credit cards. Fix a Flat Pick one of these up at any convenience store or gas station on the island and save yourself a lot of trouble. Flats happen and usually not in the most convenient places. Just connect, inflate and go! It will only seal temporarily so call your rental company for directions on where to go to get it fixed. Leave No Trace Remember to leave the beach just as you found it. If you or your children dig holes or make sand castles, level the sand before you go. Don’t make huts from the palms for shade. Many beaches are turtle nesting beaches and baby sea turtles can get stuck, diverted by sand mounds or obstructions on their way to the ocean. Cell Service at the Beach If you hire a publico to take you to the beaches remember to arrange a pick up time before they drive off because cell service may not be available. A Twist or a Tap If your car won’t start when leaving the beach, before panicking, first check your battery cable connections. On rough roads they tend to bounce and loosen. Tighten them up or give them a tap and try again!

the house that jam built Jim Stott and Jonathan King are the founders of Stonewall Kitchen, a Maine company that produces high-quality, specialty food products. Relaxing in their Vieques home surrounded by floor to ceiling mahogany with their golden retriever Lilly at their feet, they reflect on how they came to find Vieques...
"We came down with friends on a Thursday and before lunch on Saturday we owned this property. We fell hard and quick for Vieques." The house, named Quinta Caoba (Mahogany) by the hardware store delivery men who delivered load after load of wood, was designed by architect Wayne Rowly. With floor to ceiling windows and mahogany vaulted ceiling, it has a West Indian cottage feel with a British colonial accent. When Jim and Jonathan step off the plane in Vieques their lives take a turn to the simple life... the beach, their house, their friends and, of course, Lilly.

How did Stonewall Kitchen get its start? "We went to a farmer's market in 1991 with some blueberry jam that we made, Jim says. “That was it. There was no plan, no dream, no idea that it would be our careers, no nothing. Before that we were both waiting tables in two different restaurants." "The name Stonewall Kitchen came from looking out our kitchen window at an old stone wall," Jonathan adds, as they both laugh at the memory. Now, Stonewall Kitchen has expanded to add a restaurant and state of the art cooking classroom. It is one of the largest tourist attractions in Maine.
Lilly's Life
Lilly's got it made. As a service dog, she enjoys trips to Sunbay, high-end doggie biscuits and, a gorgeous view overlooking Esperanza. Lilly is the proud owner of her two humans, Jim Stott and Jonathan King.
DID YOU KNOW? Dogs are allowed on all beaches except Sunbay, Media Luna, and Navio. Service dogs are allowed on all beaches.

Low cost spay and neutering clinic The Vieques Animal Clinic is a community-wide clinic dedicated to spaying and neutering our Satos for low cost as well as providing education to our island residents about the benefits of altering our dog population. The idea was conceived because we could no longer turn a blind eye to our very real and growing problem of abandoned and neglected dogs on the island. All our animal care and educational programs, The Vieques Humane Society, Our Big Fat Caribbean Rescue, Juntos and dozens upon dozens of concerned citizens have come together for the benefit of our island animals. April 1 is the day we band together for the love of our Satos. April 1 is the day we start showing how much we care. April 1 is our first Vieques Animal Clinic and we couldn't be prouder. Please support our cause. Go to Facebook; Vieques Animal Clinic, and we will be truly thankful for all help we receive.

These island treats are made and sold right here on Vieques. They are the perfect addition to your shopping list and gift ideas.
If your dog is not on a leash you run the risk of a fine. There are many reasons for the leash law, please respect them.
1. There are many stray
dogs on the island and the beaches. Your dog running on the beach could surprise them in their territory and cause them to attack your dog.
Vieques Killer Bee Honey Wild cut honey harvested locally. Available in Esperanza at Abe's Gift Shop and Vieques Gifts and in Isabel II at Buen Provecho, Funky Beehive, and the VQS Emporium.

coqui fire hot sauce There are 11 different locally made sauces to choose from, with sweat factors ranging from 2-15. Pick it up in stores around the island or buy online www.coquifire.com
2. Some adults and
children are afraid of dogs and want to relax on the beach.
3. Vieques is a prime
nesting site for Leatherback turtles which are at critical risk of extinction. Dogs will naturally dig if they find a nest, putting the eggs or hatchlings at risk.
4. Dogs are domestic
animals but will naturally interfere with wildlife.

A South American twinning vine that bears gorgeous, exotic blossoms followed by perfectly spherical yellow or deep purple-skinned fruit. The orange-yellow pulp is truly perfume-like, delectable and chock full of edible, crunchy seeds. Here on Vieques the pulp of the fruit and the juice is consumed to alleviate high blood pressure. The pulp contains fair amounts of vitamin C, carotenes, vitamin A, niacin, riboflavin, phosphorous and potassium. So go ahead, have another parcharita!

His colorful creations have since morphed into recycled flower lampshades, baskets to place upon pedestals, and other hanging wonders. Pito uses soda, water and Clorox bottles to create his pieces, and his style continues to evolve. Each flower decoration takes over 170 bottles that he gets from his clients, local restaurants, stores and others who bring them by. Until Patronales this past July, this creative man had been gifting his designs to local friends and relatives until a local doctor purchased a few to hang from their balcony. These whimsical creations are not only keeping trash out of our local landfills but are also providing funky and unique decorations to the island’s already vibrant colors. While Pito doesn’t have plans yet to sell his creations on a larger scale he has picked out a fun name for his future endeavor – Forever Flowers. recao Recao (Broadleaf Coriander) is by far the most ubiquitous culinary herb in Puerto Rico. Appreciated for its pungent, cilantro-like taste, recao (pronounced reh-cow) is found growing in yards or freshly cut in Morales’ produce section and at the local fruit stand. The herb bears ground-hugging rosettes of dark-green, tongue-shaped foliage that are armed with small sharp spines along the leaf margins. The spines make it difficult to eat large leaves raw. Not surprisingly, this herb has a multitude of medicinal uses. The Caribe Indians used this plant as a cure-all. On Vieques, leaf teas of broadleaf coriander are drunk to lower both high blood pressure and high blood sugar. Brewed with rue and fennel this tea regulates the menses and alleviates menstrual pain. Elsewhere through the West Indies recao-based strong leaf teas are considered antispasmodic, anticonvulsant and antihysterical - hence another English common name, “fit weed”. These particular qualities have been clinically proven. Nutritionally, recao is reportedly high in calcium, phosphorous, iron and vitamins A, B and C, making it healthful and tasty. Look for it in your yard. Rub a leaf between your fingers and if it smells like strong cilantro you have found it! 34

VIEQUES CEVICHE BY CHEF EVA BOLIVAR
Ceviche is a popular seafood dish found on the menu of many Vieques restaurants and traditionally consists of raw seafood marinated in lime or lemon juice.
1 tablespoon Sugar 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce Mix all the vegetable ingredients together Salt and Pepper to Taste Add the lime juice, orange juice and tomato juice to the vegetables add Worcestershire sauce ½ an hour before serving add fish and refrigerate Garnish with Fresh Avocado Cubes and Cilantro
The citrus juice firms the raw seafood and turns it opaque, giving it the appearance and texture of being cooked.
Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems should avoid the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood.
Artist Damian Gil-Rivera
love, light, and life BY: SYLVIA FERNANDEZ
You might notice some changes around the island, particularly on abandoned walls. They are getting new life thru the work of artist Damian Gil-Rivera. Thanks to a donation from Master Paint, Gil-Rivera is sharing his talent with us by painting colorful, exquisite murals on walls that, in his words, need a little “love, light and life.” “I wish to express my soul through art,” the artist says, “and gratitude for the life I'm living.” Gil-Rivera brings a unique abstraction to island life with his style of painting. His recent mural on 997 should not be missed. Slow down, or enjoy it from El Resuelve Restaurant across the street. Damian has also painted murals at La Parque de Ceiba on the way to Rompeolas Pier and in the local cemetery. A new mural is underway in Isabel II. Contact the artist by email - mututropik@yahoo.com or find "Damian Gil Rivera” on Facebook for more information.

12x12 SHOW
CALLING ALL ARTISTS that's you!
The 12x12 show at the Siddhia Hutchinson/Glen Wielgus Gallery will be held March 16, 2017. The show features artwork created by students, community members and professional artists combining the owners’ love of art and their passion for helping the island’s animals in need. The goal is to raise funds and awareness for the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue, and to offer a showcase for the island’s limitless creativity. Last year’s show raised over $20,000, with 100% donated to the VHSAR. Beginning February 1st, interested Vieques community members may stop by the gallery to pick up a 12” x 12” canvas to create a masterpiece to donate to the event. Artists working in other media may contribute any creation, as long as it is exactly 12” x 12”. Artwork will be on display for a silent auction at the gallery March 6th through March 16th, with a grand finale bidding exhibition and reception event the evening of Thursday, March 16th, 6-8pm. Out-of-towners can call the gallery with their bids beginning March 6th and are encouraged to call the gallery through the evening of the 16th to check on or raise their bid. All monies raised from your donated artwork will be given to the VHS. For more information call 787-741-1343.

OUR AMAZING
BIOBAY
There are few places in the world that classify as bioluminescent “bays”. Puerto Mosquito, Vieques’ bioluminescent bay, is considered by many to be one of the hidden wonders of the world, having been declared the brightest in the world by Guinness World Records. The experience of taking a guided tour should absolutely not be missed if you are visiting. It is an experience that will stay with you a lifetime.

One can only imagine what the Taíno Indians thought of the glowing waters of the bay. Elders of the community tell stories of how the bay glowed much brighter than it does now, probably due in part to less light pollution at that time. Named Caño Hondo, la Laguna and la Bahía by the locals, the bay has traditionally been used by the local fishing community and their families as a source of food and baitfish, and as a safe harbor for boats during a storm. The bay once provided oysters, and families would collect them from the roots of the mangroves. It was said that the bay could be crossed side to side in the shallows and fishers would walk the bay rather than fishing by boat. Locals named parts of the shoreline after those who frequented the area such as Playita Don Flores and Felix Dones lagoon.
Tourism on Vieques grew in the 1980s and the Biobay became a main attraction. People came to the bay with local fishers in little dinghies to see what was then a secret. Sharon Grasso began the electric boat tours and soon several kayak operations popped up. At one point a boat called the Moonglow departed from Esperanza at night, travelling to the mouth of the bay from the Caribbean Sea. The bay and surrounding areas received the designation of a Natural Reserve on June 1, 1989. This was done through a combination of efforts spearheaded by the VCHT and their president at the time, Myrna Pagan Connelly, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and the Puerto Rican senate. THE SCIENCE The magic of the Biobay is created by single cell organisms called Pyrodinium bahamense (whirling fire of the Bahamas), a type of luminescent dinoflagellate. This single cell microscopic plankton is able to convert chemical energy into light energy by synthesizing luciferin which, when mixed with the enzyme luciferase, plus oxygen, produces a bluish-green light. The glow is thought to be a defense mechanism. The highest concentration of dinoflagellates in the bay to date was 938,041 per gallon. Pyrodinium bahamense The concentration varies over time and even at a fraction of that (whirling fire of the concentration, the Biobay bedazzles. bahamas) Dinoflagellate

THE ECOLOGY
There are several conditions that make Mosquito Bay the ideal environment for the dinoflagellates to exist in higher concentrations than anywhere else in the world.
A majestic mangrove forest, seagrass beds, a coral reef and neighboring lagoons have combined to create and protect one of the most delicate and unique ecosystems on earth. The lucky location and formation of the bay are key factors. A narrow, shallow mouth traps the water inside and keeps the high concentration of dinoflagellates from being washed out of the bay. The prevailing winds blowing east to west across the mouth of the bay also keep the organisms inside. The
specific water quality that makes up the secret recipe of the bay's primordial soup is perfect, with just the right mixture of salinity, temperature, nutrients, and other components yet to be revealed. Finding out the recipe is the quest of many people who study the bay, but one thing they all agree on: the amount of factors, variables and components balanced in this fantastic ecosystem is mind-boggling.
THE RECIPE
RED / BLACK MANGROVES provide nutrients for the dinoflagellates.
NARROW, SHALLOW ENTRANCE TO THE BAY traps dinoflagellates inside.
WATER DEPTH, TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY allow dinoflagellates to thrive.
PREVAILING WINDS blow across the mouth of the bay from east to west and keep the high concentration of dinoflagellates from “flushing out. 43

DARK EVENTS
PROTECTORS OF THE BAY
In January of 2014 the Vieques Biobay stopped glowing for several months. While a cause for alarm and a detriment to tourism, it is not uncommon for bioluminescent bays throughout the world to go dark for a few days or weeks creating a “dark event” on the bay. In Vieques, research found that there were 200 bahamense parts per liter compared to 75,000 parts per liter in 2011. Factors that can affect the concentration of dinoflagellates are weather related (winds, tides, rains) and changes to its hydrology and, of course, contamination. In the context of climate change, scientists have been looking into its possible effects on water level, temperature of air and water, ocean acidification, and other major events such as increased sargassum seaweed. Fortunately, logical minds have recognized the effects of human interaction with the bay and efforts have been underway to minimize and/or prevent dark events. Listed below are conservation efforts and protocols that exist to protect the bay.
The Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Natural Reserve is co-managed by DNER and VCHT. The lands belong to the National Parks Company (NPC), the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO) and DNER, while other assets are of public domain. Mark Martin Bras, Director of Community Relations & Field Research at VCHT, whose name is synonymous with the bay, has worked tirelessly for more than 12 years to study and protect it. His efforts creating educational outreach to children and the award-winning summer Manta camp for kids will resonate far into the future. Tours of the bay are also offered by VCHT and collaborating operators. Biobay tour operators and guides play a crucial role in protecting the bay and ensuring on a daily basis that visitors do not impact the bay in a negative way. They are the nightly guardians of this treasure as well as your escort to experience nature as you have never seen her before. Continued research, education and environmental consciousness have led to cooperative collaboration between the operators and guides and the VCHT and DNER. They are working together to ensure the bay continues to glow.
• Installation of permanent solar powered monitoring station by the USGS to measure real-time parameters. • Reduction of sediment, pesticide runoff and nutrient loading in the bay. • Implementation of erosion and sedimentation control on road, parking area and walkways. • Reevaluation of the bay’s usage capacity. • Increased training for Bay tour guides and operators such as first aid, CPR, environmental interpretation, etc., including the coordination of resources and venues. • Cooperative collaboration with the operators, guides, VCHT and DNER to protect the bay into the future.
• Adherence to the no-swimming policy to reduce/eliminate pollution. • Evaluation of the hydrology of the area and implementation of restrictions on land clearing or plant removal. • Creation of educational outreach for light pollution Law 218 detailing requirements for surrounding barrios. • Weekly monitoring of water quality and plankton counts in the bay carried out by VCHT.

• Three-day moratoriums to prohibit tours to the bay on the day before, during and after full moon.

TODAY The Biobay has been revered and respected for many years by many people including locals, visitors, students, guides and scientists, and it is people who are protecting and caring for it on a daily basis. Yet, it is safe to say that, over time, people do the most harm to these dinoflagellates and their home. The attraction of this must see, bucket list, once in a lifetime destination could also become its demise. We have seen what people have done to destroy other bays. It inevitably means the loss of needed tourism activity and, most importantly, a stunning piece of nature. Proactive steps have been taken to guard the bay for the future but we can’t do it without your help. As a visitor to an island dependent on tourism, you can help. Support our efforts to protect this natural wonder by visiting the VCHT. Leave a donation, sponsor
a child for summer camp, shop in the gift store, or simply share your experience with a friend and pass on the magic. The most important thing you can do is to book your tour through one of the licensed tour operators listed on the following page. You as a traveler have the power to help determine the conservation and survival of this wonder by abiding by the rules meant to protect it. The relationship between dinoflagellates and humans is a delicate one, requiring diligent attention to the conservation of the Biobay while sharing its beauty with our visitors. It is our hope that all locals and visitors will embrace this challenge for current and future generations. n
“There is natural magic that still moves us, that we don't understand and that cannot be controlled by us. If you let the environment work in its perfect balance, you will be enlightened." –Mark Martin

You asked, we answered
15 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT TAKING A BIOBAY TRIP
Can I see the bioluminescence in the daytime?
What do I need to bring with me?
What if I have never kayaked?
No, the glow is only visible at night.
As little as possible. Many companies provide storage on the van or bus while you are on the tour, but it is advised not to bring valuables or electronics including cell phones, cameras, or devices. Bring a towel and water. Pay for the tour with a credit card on the phone when you make the reservation so you don’t need to bring your wallet or purse.
When you make your reservation tell the guide your experience level. It helps to have a basic understanding of kayaking but guides can assist you. The bay is protected and usually very calm so the level of difficulty is very easy.
Why should I go with a licensed guide? Licensed tour operators are complying with the conservation protocol established and have the necessary course requirements to provide a safe and educational tour. Licensed operators are required to purchase permits, pay taxes, have a navigation license, insurance, be certified in CPR and First Aid, pay a fee to the DNER which contributes to the conservation efforts, and comply fully with the regulations set in the management plan. Guides have taken courses and adhere to a strict safety code. The licensed operators listed here each offer you a magical experience on the Biobay. Their expertise is invaluable. What should I wear?
Tour operators have transportation to the bay but in unique circumstances you may be asked to drive and follow the guide to the entrance. Will anything jump in my boat? Small fish or shrimp may jump in your boat. Just help it out or tell your guide. It’s a sign of good luck!
Clothing that you don’t mind getting wet. Bathing suit and shorts, with a loose fitting top or rashguard.
Should I tip the guide? It is courtesy to tip your guides.
What shoes should I wear?
The law against swimming in the bay is a proactive step taken to reduce the human impact on the bay. Body lotions, sunning oils, soap residue, shampoos, etc. all have a biologic impact.
Water shoes or flip flops are recommended. Are trips cancelled due to rain? No. To be on the bay when it is raining is a magical experience and has been called the Bay of Lights. Each raindrop hitting the surface will provide a display of light. Will I get wet? You won’t get completely wet because you won’t be swimming but you will have water in your kayak and may be splashed by the paddles.
48
Do I have to drive my own car on the bumpy road?
What are the glowing stones in the pathway made of? The stones are made of Phosphorescent plastic. The pathway is designed to light your way without light pollution. They also help your eyes transition to the glow of the bay. Is bioluminescence the same as phosphorescence? Phosphorescence is a different type of light emission. The plastic phosphorescent stones charge up with the sun then glow in the dark. Is alcohol permitted on tours? No. It is illegal, as is smoking on the bay.
Why can’t I swim?
Not many restaurants stay open past 10pm so plan dinner accordingly.
Did you know? Every year lots of flip flps are pulled from the shallow muddy entrance to the bay where the mangrove mud builds up. Our advice? go barefoot!

A SHOT IN THE DARK BY; KELLY THOMPSON
Photographer Karl Alexander has been capturing night images using all the latest technology to be prepared for the shoot. Using star charts and apps to know where the constellations and galaxies will be positioned in the sky, he meticulously tests, scouts, plans and tests again before going on location. Watching him shoot the cover shot of the Biobay was like watching a scientist in the lab, an artist in the nighttime studio and a child at play. Before going on location we first tested the shot by putting a kayak in a pool to get the right composition, lighting (minus the bioluminescence), model pose, and props that would be needed on the actual shoot. Of course, in nature you can’t plan for everything, and shooting a bioluminescent bay is no easy task. It helps to know the layout of the bay. Luckily, Mark Martin of VCHT, a champion of the bay with a back-of-his-hand knowledge of its nooks, crannies and features, was part of the crew. He guided us to a sweet spot where the glow of the bay would be strong but the landscape behind the subject visible. Karl knew Test shot taken in pool before going on location. where to position our model Brittany and her kayak so the Milky Way was floating in the sky just behind her. By the way, it also helps to have a very patient model. “We’ve got ten minutes before the cloud cover rolls in,” Karl said, at one point. Sure enough within ten minutes we were getting soaked by a light rain and the Milky Way disappeared behind the clouds. It was an excellent example of why planning mattered. He got the shot. And now, so do you. The cover shot is a compilation of three images shot in the exact same location; stars, water glow and subject. 5 tips
FOR SHOOTING IN THE BIOBAY If your camera isn't waterproof, don’t take it!
Have a protective cover or bag to house your camera.
Play with high ISO, long exposures, and a wide open aperture.
Shoot in RAW mode if your camera has the capacity. It will give you more image data to play with in your photo editor.
Long exposures mean blurry subjects. Try to have your subject be as still as possible.

VIEQUES FISHERMEN
OF TIME AND TIDE BY: TOM O'GRADY JR.
Science has long known the influence of the Moon on our oceans; the rise and fall of tides, the constant pull of water against an ever-resisting planet. But what does science know of the pull of men to the sea? Is it Physics, Astronomy, or something more? For the fishermen of Vieques the connection is as strong as their bloodlines and as meaningful as their lives.

Family, fraternity and nature cycle through them in many ways.

Back from a long but rewarding day, Marcos and Arizok will weigh and bag their catch and sell to the fish market (Pescaderia) next to the pier. The Pescaderia is open Monday through Saturday until 3pm to walk in and buy fish, lobster or conch.
it’s
easy to believe, as you sip your coffee in the morning sun, that the day has just begun, and all that is to happen on La Isla Nena lies ahead. But you would be wrong. North shore and south shore fishermen loaded their boats before the sun was up, seeking the bounty you will be served in restaurants that very evening. They’ve been at work for five or six hours; some floating on the surface in the rising heat, some skimming the ocean floor as eighty feet of water presses down. They are at work, but they are also happy. It is a special world they live in. Marcos Calzada has striking blue eyes filled with a constant laughter. He learned to swim, snorkel and spear fish from his dad and started deep diving at 12 years old. When he dives he is attached by rope to a buoy floating on the surface of the water that his partner in the boat, Arizok Melendez, pays careful attention to. With Marcos 80 feet below, it is Arizok’s job as boyero to fight off boredom, fatigue and weather conditions - distractions that could avert his attention from the buoy and his partner below.
56
Marcos speaks of a day of diving many years ago when a storm rolled in. His watcher at the time lost sight of the buoy as heavy rain obscured the ocean. When Marcos finally surfaced, the weather had cleared a bit and he could see the boat about four miles away, too far to be heard. Word got back to the pier and other fishermen went out to search for him. Marcos swam for 24 hours. In the dark he used the stars and the lights from the shore to navigate. When asked where he came to shore he laughs and says, “Right back here where I started from!” Today, while diving and searching the ocean floor for conch, Marcos felt an earthquake tremor. He could hear the vibration in the water and feel the ocean floor tremble, a feeling he remembers from the days when the Navy shook the island with falling ordnance. He speaks of the memory with wonderment, subtly aware of how unique it is.
He has a deep respect for the ocean taught to him by his dad. His father was waiting for him at the pier to buy Conch to send to his sister in Fajardo. Marcos jokingly said he was “shipping it priority mail,” which meant running it to the ferry leaving in ten minutes. Marcos has 4 daughters, three sons and 14 grandchildren. His children don’t want to fish for a living. “It is all changing,” he says, with a sense of uncertainty. “The fishermen are all getting older and many of the younger generation do not want to fish.” But some do. The Ventura family is a multigenerational family of fishermen and many of them still make their living in the water. Pumba Ventura, a single father raising three children, sits with his daughter Prieta at the pier. She is still in her school uniform as she watches the other fishermen weigh their catch. Pumba calls the sea “their other school”. “I am still learning things about the ocean,” he says, with quiet modesty. “My father taught me to never be afraid of the ocean but to never disrespect it. The wind, the currents, the seasons. It is a long process to teach about fishing because you will never have
Pawao Cruz and Georgie Peterson show off the largest catch of the day. 8 pound and 7.5 pound lobsters.
Pumba Ventura's children have been fishing since they were very young. The first catch feeds the family and the rest they sell.
Your dinner at any of the amazing Vieques restaurants is really "sea to table." Fishermen sell directly off the boat to the restaurant chefs.
57
two days of fishing that are the same. Everyday…,” he pauses to find the words, “…you just try to pass on what you learn. Tomorrow will be different.” Two more boats return from the day’s trip and it’s a family reunion on the dock; Father and Uncle in one boat, his two sons in another. Brothers Pawao Cruz and Omar Cruz fish every day with the same crew in the boat Eira captained by Sidon Colon. The two brothers learned to fish with their father Tumby, who now fishes with another crew. They all used to fish together but the brothers formed their own crew. “Our company,” Pawao jokes. Today they unload 56 lbs. of lobster and some large grouper. One of the lobsters is enormous, and all of the fishermen on the dock take bets on the weight.
The best guess is 7.5 lbs. It’s 8. Omar and Pawao dove to 80 feet three times since 5:30am. In a time of increased information and ever faster technology the world of the Vieques fishermen moves at nature’s pace. Their simple occupation, a blend of biology and behavior, reveals a deeply lived ritual that still determines their path. It has continued for generations, and perhaps, for many more. In their minds the future is uncertain, but the present is clear. This is what they do; what they must do. When they return from the sea they are tired but they are jovial. They have full boats, they have stories to tell and they are safe back on land once again. They are the fishermen of Vieques. n

For a mere four dollars you can load up your car with friends and family and visit Sun Bay, one of the most spectacular beach vistas on Vieques. But what you may not know is you’ve just hit the trifecta with your bet. THREE of the most beautiful yet uniquely diverse beaches of Vieques, Sunbay, Media Luna and Navio, lie just beyond the entrance on Rt. 997. Under a joint care and management agreement between the DRNA and the Vieques Historical Trust each of these beaches is receiving the attention needed to be considered a top tier Caribbean beach. And you can hit them all in one day with a little planning.
SunBay
A spectacular one mile expanse of white sand with plenty of shade, Sunbay is the perfect destination to wind down, relax and enjoy the crystal clear water of the Caribbean. It is the only beach on Vieques with rest rooms, showers and food service. Sunbay is the preferred beach where locals gather for dominos, barbeques and beach games. Once you find your spot in the sun you may find it difficult to leave!
Media Luna
After Sunbay, head east to the end then follow the signs to Media Luna. This beach is ideal if traveling with small children. Sand as soft as powder, the warmest water on island, a very gradual pitch and extremely calm water ensure the comfort and confidence of even the very young. The grass areas among the trees can accommodate large group cookouts or a private family picnic. The gazebos and picnic areas have been recently updated.
Navio
Just a few hundred yards east of Media Luna sits Navio, the beach for the adventurer. This open water beach creates the largest waves on the southern shore. Boogie boarding and body surfing are the predominant water activities but there is also very good snorkeling along the eastern shoreline. The cave to the east is an amazing photo opportunity. Bring a beach umbrella.

NORTH SIDE
Sometimes a picture conjures the words. Sometimes the words evoke the picture. There are always two sides to the story, especially on Vieques. Take a north-south walk through our pictures and words and let your mind abound with the possibilities. SOUTH SIDE
65
CARLO ANGELICOLA
Bordered by the wavy blue of the Atlantic, the north side offers a loosely organized configuration of main and side streets, churches, stores, bars, restaurants, shops and municipal offices, all loosely draped around the Plaza, a community square for great gatherings all year round. Charming and colorful, Isabel II ("town" or "el pueblo" to the residents) is named after the first reigning female monarch of Spain. Look carefully at the architecture; Spanish influence and amazing detail play peekaboo throughout many of the streets, and tropical colors stand boldly against surreal skies. Sitting like a decorated cake high above the town is the Fortin Conde de Mirasol, the last Spanish fort built in the Americas. Beaches are off the beaten path but offer great stroll and comb opportunities as well as surfing.

SOUTH SIDE ESPERANZA
Esperanza, on the southern coast, boasts the deep aqua and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, gently lapping along a picturesque walkway known as the Malecón. More a collection of houses than a town, Esperanza offers a walkable array of restaurants, museums, stores, piers, boating and social interaction. Sundays are full of music, dominos, and libations. Extend your pleasure east or west along the Caribbean shore to discover art, black sand, roadside food experiences and an endless string of unique beaches so visually outrageous you’ll be at a loss for words and pictures. 67

Our black sea urchin, abundant along the rocky shores and coral reefs of Vieques, are an amazing but potentially painful member of the spinyskinned invertebrates family which includes starfish and sand dollars. The Vieques black sea urchins have an ecologically important job to do. Using their tiny, tubular feet, and long, needle-like spines that can inflict an excruciating puncture wound, they clean the coral reefs of algae that could potentially smother the coral. Working at night they are the custodians of the reef, by day they are a potential injury if you don’t watch where you step! So, don’t mess with the urchins. They’re busy. They have cleaning to do.

ADVICE FROM BLACKBEARD The spines are protein based, and very brittle. If you come into contact with an urchin carefully pull out any protruding spines. If they are already under the skin don't attempt to dislodge it as it will break into tiny shards potentially causing an infection. You can try to pull them out slowly with hot candle wax. Because the spine is protein, our body pulverizes it, breaks it down, and then absorbs it. If you have multiple punctures, we always recommend you go to the hospital in case of allergic reaction.

SUNBAY Accessible by the gated entrance off 997, Sunbay is a one mile stretch of beach. Sunbay has lifeguards and bathhouse. The entrance is 5 miles from Isabel II and 0.7 miles from Esperanza (the Malecon). There is a $2 entrance fee. ........................................................
MEDIA LUNA Enter the gated entrance off 997 at Sunbay. Follow the dirt road at the end of Sunbay and travel 0.6 more miles to Media Luna. Great for small children, Media Luna is shallow. You can walk 30 ft out into the water and still be in waist deep water. Also, for a free “spa experience,” enjoy an exfoliation from the silky, fine sand. ........................................................
NAVIO Follow directions to Media Luna but pass Media Luna and take a left at the sign and go another 0.3 miles. The road is extremely rough and 4wd is required but you can also park at Media Luna and walk 72
west of the fishing piers in Esperanza. ........................................................
PLAYA GRANDE Leave Esperanza on 996 going west and come to a T (rt. 201). Take a left. Go 1 mile to where the road dead ends and take a left. Follow road to the bottom of the hill. Take a right onto dirt road to find a beach spot. Great beach for walking. Playa Grande is a turtle nesting beach so be sure to keep dogs on a leash and watch out for roped off nests. ............ ............................................
PLAYA NEGRA (BLACK SAND BEACH) Leave Esperanza on 996 going west. Come to T (201) and take left. Drive 0.1 mile and there will be a guard rail and small pull off on your left. Park here. [It is easier to turn around if you drive 100 feet more to Gallery Galleon and turn around in drive just past entrance to Gallery.] Walk down the path to the dried stream bed and follow to the right. It is about a 20 minute walk to the beach. If it has rained, stream bed will actually be a small stream. Bring bug spray and water.
Refuge at the Sol Food truck. Go aprox 2 miles to a sign for Caracas. Turn right and go aprox 1.5 more miles. No shade except for picnic gazebos in the grass area. Watch out for the sandburs! (see below). Be very careful where you step when you are in the grassy area and kids should wear their shoes down to the sand (or water’s edge). Note: Only park in the parking lot, and not in the cul-de-sac at the very end, to avoid fines. ........................................................
PLAYUELA* From 997, turn into the FWS
Refuge at the Sol Food truck. Go aprox 2 miles to the brown sign for Caracas. Turn right and go aprox 1 mile to brown sign for Playuela and Tres Palmitas. Turn right and drive 2 minutes to the sign and take the walking path to the left to get to the beach. A short walk and you’re there! ........................................................
PATA PRIETA* From 997, turn into
BLAYDIN BEACH OR MOSQUITO BEACH Follow direc-
the FWS Refuge at the Sol Food truck and go aprox 2 miles. Pass turn to Caracas and continue straight on dirt road for aprox 1 mile and turn right at Pata Prieta sign. After 0.2 miles, follow the road to the right to a small parking area with sign. Walk down the (slippery) gravel path to the left of the sign to the beach. Rough road so 4wd is recommended. Bring a beach umbrella as there is little shade! ........................................................
tions to the pier but right before going out onto the pier there is a small sandy road to the left that leads to a shallow beach. There are lots of starfish here so be very careful where you step! ........................................................
PUNTA ARENAS Follow directions
LA CHIVA* From 997, turn into the
FWS Refuge at the Sol Food truck and go aprox 2 miles to the end of the paved road. Pass the sign for Caracas and continue straight on the dirt road. La Chiva has numbered spots #1-21. At marker #15 the road splits so stay right if you want to explore La Chiva spots #16-21. ........................................................
LA PLATA* Follow directions to La
........................................................
Chiva but when road splits take left and go 0.5 miles to reach La Plata. ........................................................
EL PARQUE CEIBA Go west on 201 approximatelyg 1 mile past the airport and follow the sharp curve to the right.Go down a small hill and the Ceiba tree is on your right. Enjoy the Ceiba tree without climbing, marking or damaging the roots. ........................................................
NORTH SHORE BEACHES
ROMPEOLAS Follow directions to the Ceiba tree but pass the Ceiba and continue on the main road to the left.Take the next right at the empty concrete structure with parking lot and this road will take you to the pier. Rompeolas pier is 1 mile long so it is great for beginning joggers or walkers! Great snorkeling on the left side of the pier.
SEA GLASS BEACH Drive into Isabel II on 200 and make a left onto main street (Calle Muñoz Rivera). Almost at the end of the street you will see an intersection with a church on your right. Make a left here and at the next intersection make a right. Park on the street (not in the yellow!) and walk to the left of the gazebo down a path to the beach. ........................................................
to Rompeolas but go past turn for pier and drive aproximately 2 miles. You will come to a sign that says you are entering FWS Refuge. Drive 1 mile and come to a T / there are spots to the left and to the right with the best snorkeling to your left. Much of Punta Arenas has eroded away so, in many places, there is not a beach to sit on until further down on the right. No-see-ums tend to come out in the afternoon so make it a morning excursion and bring your bug spray! ........................ ................................
BUNKERS To see the hidden Navy bunkers follow directions to Rompeolas but keep straight past the turn for pier. Drive 2 miles and take the second paved road to the left. This road is a short loop that will bring you back to the same road.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO EXPLORE THEM ALL, THESE ARE INSIDER FAVORITES!
..................................................
LA CHATA Drive by the ferry on your left and go up the steep hill to the right of El Yaté Bar. Go by the lighthouse on your left and take the next right down a steep little hill. Curve to your left and follow along this shoreline road. Pass La Lanchita on left and drive aproximately 0.35 miles to a left turn onto a small dirt drive with two palms and large rocks at the end. La Chata! Keep your eyes open for sea glass. Don’t be surprised if you are swimming with horses! Many people come here to exercise them. ........................................................
EL GALLITO Pass the W on 200 going west and look for a parking area and short peninsula on your right. The beach is on the right. Great place to be at sunset! Excellent photo spot!
