One of FLOR’s popular item, light baked cheese cake piled with fruits of the season and fresh cream.

DAY IN MY LIFE

Aquatic Daydream As someone whose illustration styles are heavily inspired by Japanese artworks and a huge nerd for limited edition Japanese stationery, I wanted to reflect these visuals into my 5 postcards.

My initial sketches involved windows and other abstract imageries such as flowers and the galaxies but I changed everything back to aquatic animals for consistency.

After discussion with Huiying I got a better idea of what I wanted to do for the postcards - to feel very peaceful and dreamlike so I should have go with more analogous colours or in Woon Lam’s words, more friends.

ASSIGNMENT 1

The illustrations had to be more flat and adhere to composition rules so that it would not stand out to the eye and would be more pleasing.

/ draft 1 I blocked out the colours, shapes and composition for each individual card and made sure to keep the colour palette analogous and tried not to use too much contrast.

I learnt that my poor attempt at texturing and blending colours was called “bleeding” in art, something that can add details and help focus the eye more.

DAY IN MY LIFE

/ draft 2 development

In draft 2, the kines were cleaner overall and textures were

also refined and more vibrant, making it dreamier overall.

very subtle shadows were used to break the light + gave off a gentle feeling too.

ASSIGNMENT 1

further tweaks The printed version involved some more final tweaks such as having more defined hands and tapering the fins for refinement.

DAY IN MY LIFE

/ final submission!

/ black & white version

For the final version I increased the brightness slightly to match the tonal values to the other postcards (it was too dark previously)

NEW vs OLD

ASSIGNMENT 1

More transitional colours were also added in sections to blend the shapes slightly The postcards are also arranged in a way that similar colours are not side by side and also narrate how communting is like for me every weekend Wake up lazy > bus > MRT > walking > grabbing home.

MAGAZINE COVER

A magazine cover! After my pecha kucha presentations, I was thinking of doing a more playful/lifestyle type of illustration as I was greatly inspired by 刘侃, Liu Kan (or better known as 666KArt/666K信譞 ) and his use of vibrant colours in his paintings.

I love the colours so much!! My go-to ideas were east-asian magazines due to the Chinese/Korean/Japanese letterforms allowing for vertical typography. Hence I came across La Vie which was a Taiwan Magazine that focuses on Creativity, Design, Trends and Lifestyle.

La Vie was established in 2004 and also french for “Life”!

One thing that stood out to me was that La Vie had a variety of styles when it came to their magazine covers. They rotated between Photographs, Abstract Images and Illustration Covers for their issues.

ASSIGNMENT 2

These were some of my favourite covers. The vibrant blue reminded me of Liu Kan’s art style and also a very refreshing summer feeling which I tried to do for some of my concepts later.

MAGAZINE COVER

Concept Thumbnails

I did alot of thumbnails and some colour variations and text layout tests for the “vibe-check”! I’ve removed some of them as they are repetitive and would be hard to layout in the flipbook as well. But from here on I’ll let the visuals do the talking since this is a sketchbook! I’ll come back to give a few comments to conclude the milestones. O1: Isometric design play space

O2: Calm Seas, Summer Breeze

ASSIGNMENT 2

MAGAZINE COVER O3 Lifestyle, In action, Working in progress

From these sketches I actually liked #1 and #5 the most but proceeded with #1 because I wanted to do a more detailed illustration (I’m usually too lazy so I want to push myself this time.) I also learnt that these are thumbnails and not sketches so...very interesting. Feedback was that I had to design the playground better so that we know what elements go where in the drawing instead of blobs A and B.

Colour Tests

ASSIGNMENT 2

While I liked colour schemes #2 (pastel gradients) and #3 (green purple) the most, I initially felt like the pastel gradients were too pale whereas the purple one was too funky. Huiying also said that the#3 also greatly simplified the detailed lineart by letting the brain see the image as big shapes instead of tiny details and didn’t allow the lineart to do its magic.

Edits after feedback! I used solid colours white and purple to place emphasis on different parts of the illustration and also as a way to counter balance each other to make sure its soothing to the eyes. That way, it helped to create a sense of rhythm throughout the image too. Contrast wise, the colours were filled in in a way that adds more depth.

Afterwards, I felt like the typography was abit lacking in comparisont to the whole artwork. La Vie plays with scale from time to time and so I wanted to recreate that vibe +l a pop of colour with the shadow. Compared to right ver, the middle one was much more attention grabbing with the big text.
