Golf course greens firm up after an upgrading STRAIGHT FROM DEHART

allagher’s Canyon Golf Club has re-opened for the 2011 season with brand new ‘007’ bent grass greens. Over the course of time, the original bent grass greens had almost completely been taken over by Po annua, a weed grass. For bent grass, the non-tolerance of cold temperatures and ice covered conditions is its challenging qualities for courses located at higher elevations. Committing to resod the course at one time enables the implementation of consistent maintenance procedures for all the greens. The grass began growing in June 2010 and the successful re-sodding began at the end of March. The greens were then covered for the next four weeks and given daily labour intensive maintenance. The Gallagher’s greens are now in great shape, getting firmer and faster every day while being cut at 185/1,000th of an inch but that will be lowered to 1/10th of an inch. ate Following a process for making your dream a reality ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

Joel Young I had somewhat of a breakthrough in my thinking about what kind of person is drawn to becoming an entrepreneur. Specifically, outside of what the academic research and journalists shared, what are the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs? Recalling that we are offered the ideas of skills, techniques, models, tips, and “insider secrets, I began wondering if perhaps one of the critical characteristics might be something that cannot be taught by traditional methods—the characteristic of dreaming. Every once in a while, I come across a different kind of entrepreneur. I joyously meet and interview someone who dreams bigger than their background, education and experience suggests they can. This kind of entrepreneurial dreamer wonderfully never stopsdream-

ing, regardless of their circumstances or obstacles. This is not to say that they don’t fail or get discouraged, but they’re the kind of entrepreneur who simply creates another dream when their current dream dissolves. Living the entrepreneurial dream does not allow for discouragement nor disappointment to crush that idea for entrepreneurial achievement and success. So, are you an entrepreneurial dreamer? Are you the kind of successful entrepreneur who seems to have an almost innate ability to dream bigger than your experience, history or current environment allows? Do you have the desire, passion and power to keep on going even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds? If these personal qualities and characteristics appear to describe you, then please allow me a couple of questions: Have you identified what your entrepreneurial dreams are by writing them down? Are you currently living out your dreams? Is the first dollars earned from your venture come into your hands, or im-

pacted your personal or work schedule? What is keeping you from dreaming bigger than you do now? Have you had a recent setback or too many things are stacking up and taking up your precious time? Have you identified those things that appear to be holding you back, and found a way to move past them? How focused are you on expanding your dreams? The conclusion I have arrived at from the abundance of commentary I have written about entrepreneurial dreamers is that the most successful ones all dream continuously, and it seems and all go through a process of sorts. Let me attempt to highlight my perception of what I believe such a

process to be. Daring to Dream—a realization that you have the ability to dream. Yes, everyone dreams, but the successful entrepreneur never ceases to be deterred, just like the Ever Ready bunny, you just keep on going. Defining your Dream —once you have found your new dream, you realize that you must talk about it, think about it, plan for it and eventually, define its components. Death of your Dream –a slight diversion of progress when something happens, a setback, a crisis, a failure and your dream is crushed for a time. The successful entrepreneur will grieve their dream’s death but then apply what went wrong to their next rising quickly new dream. Discovering your Dream—this can be sure-

ly a rebirth more than a rediscovery because when an entrepreneur’s dream dies, the dreamer must resurrect it. For example, when a dream dies, their entrepreneurial dream must be reborn and take on a new life of its own. Developing Your Dream—you have come this far, dear readers, please don’t stop your dream machine just yet. Realizing your dream requires taking positive action steps to begin implementing it. Directing your Dream —perhaps the most important last step in the dreamer process, the effectively channeling of your energy and resources so that the greatest outcome of your entrepreneurial dream is achieved. And don’t be hesitant to revise if warranted. So guess what? By ex-

ercising a dream process as I have outlined for you today, you have, in essence, formulated your fantasy toward becoming a entrepreneur. You are the “star of your fantasy film and you can edit and control this film completely, so trust yourself. Stephen Leacock, humorist and economist, offers us this quote: “It may be that those who do most, dream most. I believe that this beautiful quotation sums it up nicely—so let this beautiful spring season find you embracing the entrepreneurial spirit through an abundance of entrepreneurial dreams. â–ź IMF MANAGING DIRECTOR ARRESTED

Workplace sexual harassment put in media spotlight T he arrest of the International Monetary Fund’s managing director has put the spotlight on the workplace atmosphere at the IMF. No doubt, Dominique Strauss-Kahn would have preferred to be the author of workplace change under more positive circumstances. Strauss-Kahn was arrested and charged with sexual assault in New York after allegedly confining and assaulting a hotel chambermaid. He has denied the charges and is under house arrest after putting up $1 million in bail and posting an additional $5 million insurance bond. Strauss-Kahn’s arrest prompted a report in the New York Times that sexual harassment and extra-marital affairs are rife

Robert Smithson at the IMF’s Washington premises. The Times’ story was entitled, “Men on Prowl and Women on Guard. The Times’ story described an atmosphere populated by “alpha male economists and women taking active steps to avoid unwanted attention. It called the IMF workplace a “climate in which romances often flourish—and lines are sometimes crossed. According to the Times, A 2008 internal review found few restraints on the conduct of sen-

ior IMF managers, concluding that “the absence of public ethics scandals seems to be more a consequence of luck than good planning and action. A spokesperson for the IMF has denied the existence of any institutionalized harassment and disrespect. Coincidentally, the IMF has introduced a new code of conduct restricting personal relationships in the workplace. The new code identifies the potential conflict of interest arising from a personal relationship between a supervisor and a subordinate and calls for early disclosure of such situations. Romantic relationships in the workplace have, of course, been around just as long as there have been workplaces.

The workplace is, after all, one of our main socializing venues after our formal education comes to an end, so there’s not much point in trying to eliminate personal relationships between co-workers. Surveys have indicated that over one-half of employees have been romantically involved with a co-worker and almost one-fifth of employees met their spouse at work. So, an employer seeking to totally prevent personal relationships between employees may only succeed in forcing them to be carried on in secrecy. There are circumstances, however, when an employer can (and should) lawfully impose restrictions on office romances. It would, for instance,

be perfectly acceptable for an employer to take disciplinary action when the activities of couples stray over into misconduct. This may be especially noticeable in the event of a breakdown in the relationship, when residual hostilities tend to manifest themselves in ways which are destructive to workplace harmony. The most important context in which employers may regulate office relationships is between supervisors and subordinates. It is well established that the employer has a legitimate interest in knowing about, and taking reasonable steps to control or prevent, these situations. The key problem arising from the supervisorsubordinate romance is the existence of a power

imbalance between the two. The prospect that the supervisor will abuse his or her authority in the course of the relationship is of great concern to employers. For example, a supervisor who is in the position of assessing the partner’s performance, affecting his or her salary, or making decisions about promotions is a supervisor who is not able to act objectively. And there is always the real prospect that this position of power will be used in a negative way if the relationship ends. Acting preventively, the employer can (and should) establish a policy, guidelines, and training on appropriate workplace relationships and conduct. This should be a core component of the employer’s ongoing manage-

ment training regimen. The objective is to establish a broad awareness of the boundaries of acceptable conduct. hat is career satisfaction? It is a concept that people often get confused about mostly because they don’t know how to measure it. One of the best ways to start is to reflect on one’s values as they relate to the world of work. In my coaching practice, I often use an assessment called the Career Values Scale to help clients clarify what is most important to them in their work. It is particularly useful during a planned transition or when someone is feeling burned out professionally. Combined with coaching, the CVS can help identify the kinds of things that either do or do not generate a feeling of comfort and satisfaction in one’s career. It is done online and ideally, the report is reviewed with a professional who can provide the clarity and larger context for the results. The CVS tool explores values related to career satisfaction in three key areas—Working with Others, Self-Expression and Extrinsic Rewards. It generates a personalized report that reflects one’s strength of prefer-

It reveals how much one is drawn to working directly with other people. For instance, someone may have a strong desire to be of service to others but how that service is provided will range. While one person feels drawn to work directly with others where there is a chance to build relationships, another individual might prefer to serve by offering objective analysis of issues away from the frontline. Another element of working with others is how much one needs and/ or prizes teamwork. Generally, we hear that everyone needs to be a team player. But the reality is that not everyone contributes best in an environment of steady teamwork. Some people pre-

fer independent work, produce good results on their own and don’t need a great deal of interaction with others. In the second value area of the CVS relates to the components of the work itself—its purpose, structure, pace, degree of autonomy and opportunities for using or developing one’s expertise. Some people feel more comfortable in a stable, predictable work environment than they do in one that is fast-paced, innovative and unstructured. One of the key values within this second area relates to how important personal and professional growth is to one’s career satisfaction. Some people are happy using the skills they have, while others are driven to constantly learn more so that they can ex-

pand their knowledge or refine their expertise. The third value area in the CVS relates to how much external recognition and compensation a person would like to receive for his/her work. Some people are keen to earn a high salary and value the tangible reward it represents. Others are more internally motivated and take great pride in their work, feeling that a job well done is reward enough. There is no right or wrong side of the Career Values scale. It is designed to highlight certain core values, suggesting key elements that are needed to ensure a best personal fit with a particular job or employer. When there is a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment in one’s work, chances are good that core values are being

nourished or reinforced on a regular basis. On the other hand, when there is conflict or feelings of tension in one’s work, it could be that deeply held personal values are being compromised and change is needed. The bottom line is we are each responsible for our own career success. When it comes to understanding what motivates us there is a lot to learn from exploring what we cherish most in our work. The Career Values Scale is an excellent tool for getting into that mindset. Laurie Mills is a Certified Coach and Human Resource Professional. Asked how they earned such a privilege, lead singer Craig Schram of the oft-quirky crew, admitted they “did a lot of sweet talking, but said it was ultimately worth it. Odd choices are a calling card for The Provincial Archive. Look at the cover of their last album and you’ll find it features an historic Louis Hine photo used in the sociologist’s campaign to transform child labour laws. Since quickly selling out all of his Crazy Love Tour dates across Canada last summer, Canada’s own Michael Buble has been extremely busy. Buble won a Grammy, he married the love of his life, and he traveled to 10 countries where he played for hundreds of thousands of fans making his tour one of the top five tours of 2010 in North America. Things are looking the same for 2011. Now he is coming back to B.C. to play a city he didn’t get a chance to play on the last round, Kelowna, making this a sure to be hot August night in Kelowna this summer. Couple of tracks on The Fall ‘worth price of admission’ GORILLAZ: THE FALL (VIRGIN/EMI)

This new Gorillaz album is not a live album but it isn’t really a studio album either. It is a true road album where Gorillaz recorded on the bus, in hotels, backstage and even in train stations picking up ambient sounds. The first two tunes on The Fall (recorded during an autumn tour) are terrific with the electro, boinky buzz of Phoner To Arizona that is equally propulsive yet restive, and the sweet ear candy of Revolving Doors. I had these two tracks on repeat listen for several turns and still want more. The rest of The Fall is digital travelogue where

Bruce Mitchell most of the songs closely segue into one another and take a little more time to absorb. There is a tone poem of a rattler, I think, on The Snake In Dallas, while Gorillaz become sort of airy fairy on the mellow and whimsical Little Pink Plastic Bags (as they float down the highway). There are also ‘found sounds’ here with the ambient train station an-

BEN HARPER: GIVE TILL

IT’S GONE (VIRGIN/EMI)

Ben Harper is a restless man when it comes to his music. He has changed and recorded in several styles over his career that switches from folk rock to blues to world beat to soul and now to rock n’ roll on Give Till It’s Gone, his latest studio effort. Two things have lead in part to his newfound love of rock. First, Harper

opened for a Neil Young tour which resulted in the inspiration for the ragged lead off single Rock N’ Roll Is Free (after hearing Young play Rockin’ In The Free World several times in concert). And Harper also became friends with Ringo Starr, resulting in their two collaborations with the Revolver-styled rocker Spilling Faith and its instrumental jam continuation, titled Get There From Here. Harper especially sounds like he is channeling Tom Petty on the midtempo opener Don’t Give Up On Me Now, while there is a hint of Helter Skelter in the opening to Clearly Severely. Harper returns to some folk rock on the lilting, alt-reggae of Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn that features Jackson Browne, while I thought I heard a dash of Steve Winwood’s old band Traffic in songs like Waiting On A Sign and Do It For You, Do It For Us. For the most part this is a fairly solid effort but there is a small, nagging sense that this ought to have been a better album with a few more nuggets to gush over. Otherwise Ben Harper’s old fans will enjoy. B-

fits the movie and hence Mike Tyson and his very limp sung/spoken cover of One Night In Bangkok (where much of the movie is set) and actor Ed Helm’s acoustic subminute and a half impromptu version of Billy Joel’s Allentown. The best of the tunes here is a sobering and stark cover of Nick Lowe’s The Beast In Me by Mark Lanegan that Lowe wrote for his father-in-law Johnny Cash back in the day when Lowe was still married to Carlene Carter. Danzig offers a bleak new song, Black Hell, loaded with gravitas, while Ska Rangers offer fairly straight up covers of I Ran and Billy Joel’s piano saloon song Just The Way You Are. Definitely a soundtrack for hard core fans only, with additional vintage material from Curtis Mayfield, deadmau5, Wolfmother and the aforementioned Joel with his lesser known song The Downeaster “Alexa (about a woebegone and

lonely fisherman?). C-

RORY GALLAGHER: IRIS TOUR (EAGLE RECORDS)

This is a re-issue and remaster of Gallagher’s legendary concert tour that was originally released as Irish Tour 1974. The recording label has dropped the date probably not wanting to ‘date’ this excellent blues rock album and to maybe trick huge Gallagher fans into thinking this was a new find, since Gallagher died several years ago. Gallagher is still regarded as one of if not the best blues rocker to come out of Ireland and this new mastering gives a way better sound to the proceedings. Note that this comes more or less co-released with the two-DVD set Ghost Blues The Story Of Rory Gallagher and The Beat Club Sessions 1971-72. Galvanizing stuff for old blues buffs.
