Welcome‌ The BreakOut West Festival is upon our city. This week we welcome over 400 music industry professionals including musicians showcasing their talents to talent buyers, music supervisors, managers, producers and promoters who are traveling from afar from places such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Huston, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. It is a pleasure to bring this event, which travels to a different city in Western Canada each year, to Kelowna to celebrate the amazing

talent of musicians from the great Western Canadian provinces. More than 70 fantastic emerging artists will perform, many of whom are nominated for awards at the Western Canadian Music Awards taking place on Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Kelowna Community Theatre. There are artists performing from a variety of musical genre’s including jazz, funk, Afro-rock fusion, indie rock, Francophone, hip-hop, acoustic folk, pop, country, electro, rap, soul and much more. There is truly something for everyone including an

all ages event on Saturday and the family festival Mini BreakOut West on Sunday. In the evenings go to one or more of the venues for the music at the BreakOut West Festival, all located within walking distance in the heart of Kelowna. Wristbands can be purchased which will allow you access to all venues for all performances throughout the entire weekend. Enjoy all that BreakOut West has to offer you on this music filled weekend!

Western Canadian Music Alliance History The music industry associations of Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan staged independent music festivals and conferences known as All Indie Weekend in the prairies from 1995 to 1999. With this common project, these three industry associations have worked in tandem towards the shared vision of developing the infrastructure of the independent music industry in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. After four successful All Indie

Weekends, these associations decided to join forces and resources to create a new entity to further promote prairie music to the world. This new entity, called the Prairie Music Alliance Inc. (May 1999), is a federally incorporated not-forprofit organization. All members in good standing of the three provincial recording industry associations are automatically members of the PMA. The Western Canada Music Alliance Inc. (January 2003) was formed in late 2002 when the Prairie

Music Alliance expanded, inviting the Music Industry Associations of BC and the Yukon to join forces in creating a new entity. While the Western Canada Music Week and Awards is a new event, there is a strong sense of history, a legacy of the successes of both Prairie Music Week and the West Coast Music Awards. The vision of developing the infrastructure of a regional music industry is intact and now shared across western Canada.

Awards for International Achievement at the Western Canadian Music Awards to be presented to Sarah McLachlan and Tegan and Sara. Tegan and Sara

Sarah McLachlan

Tegan and Sara Quin were born Sept. 19, 1980, in Calgary. They began playing guitar and writing songs at age 15. They initially played as PLUNK without a drummer or bass player. In 1997, they used their school’s recording studio to record two demo albums: Who’s in Your Band? and Play Day. In 1998, they won Calgary’s “Garage Warz” competition, using the studio time they won to record their first professional demo, Yellow Demo, which was followed by Orange Demo and Red Demo. Two songs from Red Demo appeared on their first album, Under Feet Like Ours, which they released independently in 1999. Neil Young’s manager signed them to Young’s Vapor Records label, and they released This Business of Art through Vapor in 2000. They have toured extensively since then. On October 2009, Tegan and Sara released their sixth album Sainthood, produced by Walla and Howard Redekopp, as well as a three-volume book set titled ON, IN, AT. The song “Paperback Head” appeared on the album, making it the first song on any Tegan and Sara album that they wrote together. Spin magazine gave Sainthood four out of five stars and wrote, “Tegan and Sara’s music may no longer be the stuff of teens, but its strength remains in how much it feels like two people talking.”

Sarah McLachlan is one of Canada’s iconic singers and songwriters today. After taking a break from recording and performing to raise her two kids, McLachlan re-emerged from her self-imposed musical exile this year with a new album, Laws Of Illusion, and headlined a revived Lilith Fair all-female concert tour after an 11 year hiatus. She was also one of the featured performers at the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Since her signing with Arista Records nearly two decades ago, every one of Sarah McLachlan’s studio and live albums has been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum by the RIAA. Touch (1988) and Solace (1991) were both gold sellers. McLachlan has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide since her recording career began in 1988 with her debut album Touch. Five of her albums have reached the Billboard Top 15. She has received a career total of 21 Juno Award nominations.

Performers 41st and Home Indie/Alternative/Folk

Alpha YaYa Diallo Guinea, West Africa/ Vancouver, BC World/Folk/Jazz Vancouver, BC •

For the greater part of the past year the band have holed themselves away in a Burnaby studio, crafting the makings of their debut album “Left In Places.” The 8 track CD is a compilation of their past and present, taking cues from contemporary DIY folk and indie rock. The songs are layered with rich instrumentation and narrative lyrics influenced by the landscape and everyone in it; from the bittersweet “Box and the Bee” to “Great Bear,” a driving tribute to the Canadian wilderness.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 8:30 p.m., Habitat Acres Of Lions Indie/Alt. Rock

Victoria, BC

Since the release of Workingin February 2009, Acres Of Lions has upheld their reputation as one of Canada’s hardest-working bands. This band knows that it takes dedication and serious work ethic to make a good band great. What started out as a misguided, teenage-angst ridden quartet, soon transformed into an energetic rock band that began to include the characteristics the band deemed necessary for their existence: melody, volume, spontaneity, oddtime signatures and above all else, energy!

Thursday, Oct. 21, 11 p.m., O’Flannigan’s Pub Friday, Oct. 22, 7:45 p.m., Cush Adaline Indie Rock/Folk/Pop

Abbotsford, BC

With a voice that seamlessly captures intimacy and intensity, Adaline’s compelling piano compositions, vulnerable lyrics, and haunting melodies have been seducing audiences since 2005. From pulsing rock, to cabaret, to orchestral ballads, Adaline creates meticulously crafted soundscapes where brass, strings, and vibraphone meet electric guitars and programmed percussion. Classical and pop sensibilities produce soundtracks that are both artistic and accessible.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 9 p.m., Streaming Café Friday, Oct. 22, 8:45 p.m., Gotcha’s Aidan Knight Soul/Pop

Victoria, BC •

Aidan Knight’s debut, ‘Versicolour,’ has been gaining momentum as an album to watch this year after playing sold out shows at The Alix Goolden Hall in Victoria, The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, and Toronto’s historic Horseshoe Tavern. Previously, his work was seen in the jacket credits of Maurice (David Foster, Warner Bros.) and The Zolas (Howard Redekopp, 604 Records) as a helpful backing player of guitar and bass, respectively. Knight’s brand of understated, genre-defying indie folk took over 2 years of recording to see the light of day, but now it’s evident: Knight is full of potential and well crafted songwriting. Awkward comedic timing in his between-song banter and dynamic, powerful arrangements are both highlights of Knight’s live show, where the audience is treated to the kind of energy seen more often in improv jazz concerts than local pubs and cafes.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 10:30 p.m., Habitat

Alpha YaYa Diallo, guitarist, singer, songwriter is a true multi-cultural Canadian artist performing in French, English and his native Guinean languages. The recent release of his sixth album, Immè, Alpha has created an incomparable discography which includes three Juno Award winners The Message, The Journey, and the hugely successful African Guitar Summit.

Friday, Oct. 22, 9:45 p.m., Cush Saturday, Oct. 23, 11:45 p.m., Cush Ariane Mahrÿke Lemire Jazz & Blues/Cabaret

Edmonton, AB

Born to bilingual parents from Saskatchewan, Ariane Mahrÿke Lemire started writing at an early age. With the help of her father, classical guitarist Lyall Steel, she eventually put her first lyrics to music. She has since played on stages across western Canada, Québec, France and Ireland. When accompanied by multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Cam Boyce, doing a solo performance, or backed by a full band, she manages to entertain crowds with theatrical deliveries of her story-like songs which blend folk, jazz, blues, a touch of cabaret and improvisation.

Friday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m., The Keg Saturday, Oct. 23, 10:45 p.m., Bohemian Café Ben Sigston Alternative/Pop

Vancouver, BC •

Whether they are simple ideas, or wide ranging thoughts, Sigston has an uncanny ability to convey himself through the melody of song. His music successfully cuts through the noise of modern existence, and extracts simple, universal truths: hope, love, redemption and the search for meaning. Sigston has clearly struck a chord both with the public and with the industry, landing showcases for major labels and a recent development deal. Ben’s struggles and his successes are both captured in “Free Now”, his new EP. The EP is a glimpse into his personal reflections and the overriding theme of the redemptive quality of love.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 8 p.m., Streaming Café Behind Sapphire Pop/Jazz/Americana

Vancouver, BC •

Behind Sapphire began as a bedroom project but became a band of scope with local producer Tom Dobrzanski (The Zolas, Said The Whale, Hey Ocean) outfitting their baroque pop and acoustic lilt with depth and his own sonic stamp. Their sound is marked by unbridled optimism and attended by virtuosity in every musical cleft and corner of the record. On stage, they flurry through pared-down folk, string-flourished anthems and vocal cadenzas in the kinetic spirit of their contemporaries. Behind Sapphire can be brazen or easygoing, but their stage troupe has moved well beyond the bedroom, into the peer-to-peer grapevine of Vancouver talent that has proven to be worth every whisper of excitement it has received.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m., Cush Bodhi Jones Pop/Folk Rock/Indie

Vancouver, BC •

Over the past 6 years, Bodhi has recorded 5 EP’s and 3 full length albums, selling over 12 000 copies while performing on the streets of downtown Vancouver. In 2009 Bodhi was selected as Virgin Radio’s “BC artist of the month,” voted into The PEAK Performance Project’s Top 20 for its freshman year, and named Vancouver’s best busker by The Georgia

In April of 2010 he released a new full length album titled ‘Where Do We Go From Here?’ produced by Winston Hauschild (Hannah Georgas) and mixed by Shawn Cole (Bend Sinister, Yukon Blonde, and You Say Party! Christina Maria Acoustic / Folk / Pop

Singer-songwriter Christina Maria hails from Surrey, BC (a suburb of Vancouver), but don’t try to pin her music to any one place; while she was born and raised in Canada, her eclectic folk pop sound reflects her diverse experiences touring and traveling throughout the world. She began songwriting at the age of 15, and within a year, she was already a well-versed performer, winning Surrey’s Creative Contributions Award. Straight Line, Christina’s most recent album, contains tracks ranging from the Eastern-inflected “It Is What You Make It” to the silky after-hours jazz lilt of the title track, the album’s lush array of sounds and styles hints at its unique genesis.

Thursday, Oct. 21, 8:30 p.m., Cush Christopher Arruda Pop/Folk Rock/Soul

Nanaimo, BC •

Arruda’s performances are bold and varied. One moment a boistrous shout, the next a soft whisper, Christopher strives to connect with the audience through unbridled fervor and a captivating presence. Influenced by the likes of Thom Yorke, Sufjan Stevens, Rachel Yamagata and Sarah Slean, his sound strikes a chord somewhere between pop, rock and folk music but his only goal is to create inspiring soundscapes that are honest and true.

Losin’ Lately Gambler, is the 6th album from Corb Lund, Alberta’s acclaimed, alternative country star. Produced by the noted Nashville drummer and vocalist Harry Stinson (of Marty Stuart’s Fabulous Superlatives), this is Lund’s first album on his new record label New West Records. Lund’s latest series of songs on Losin’ Lately Gambler, features a gallery of subjects drawn from real life. Drawing from charaters in this family history, in his lyrics, creates a quirky edge that draws in a broad audience to his country music. Lund has been named Roots Artist of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association for the last five years running and is a JUNO award winner.

Classically trained in piano for 12 years and early experience opening for bands like Nickelback and the Barstool Prophets has bode David well. In addition, he has showcased his music at several music festivals around the world and toured widely across North America on “Hard to Control” (2007) and “Things Left Unsaid” (2009) playing rooms across Canada and in the US from New York to LA in venues such as the Viper Room and the House of Blues in Hollywood.

As a founding member of Canadian indie rock outfit Mother Mother, Debra-Jean Creelman was afforded ample opportunities to learn about the stage, the studio, and the road. Coming from Canada’s arguably most “extreme” city (i.e.: cold, heat, music, arts), chemistry, talent, a bit of ego, and a lot of heart and desire are the key ingredients to success. At this point, Team E&H isn’t about to hit the showers anytime soon. In fact, their latest album Sirensong has taken them to new heights. E&H know the importance of putting in a full “game” effort and that they can’t sit back on past success. Everyone’s gotta be working hard the full game if they want to make the playoffs.

Gordie Tentrees is from the cold and rustic Yukon Territory and writes like a disciple to preeminent Texas storytellers on his third album, Mercy or Sin. “Alfred” leads off the record, a darkly poignant acoustic tale -“Walks with a hitch, right side hip, reads a dirt palm, right before he spits, thinks on the rain, hollers for the end, Alfred is old his blood ain’t thin.” But don’t settle in for a mellow country/folk album, because he brings his resophonic guitar and stomp board to a roaring “No Integrity Man” for a decidedly blues-rock feel—and a hint of rockabilly on “Same Old Blues.” Tentrees and band are relentless road-warriors, with almost 200 dates the past year in Canada and Europe.

A year after the guys were jamming they took a chance on Cody’s older sister Tamara as the lead singer in 2005. While Familia love the classic “pop tune”, they aspire to meld the catchiness of pop with the heart of a progressive and mysterious sound. Langley, BC •

YUCA skilfully redraw the rock & roll design. One moment Matt’s vocal gentleness will envelop you and the next he’ll soar high and lead you to someplace new. Justin’s guitars are equally comfortable setting an anthemic ambiance to tearing up a wicked solo. Andy and Dave are the foundation that moves the music from soulful grooves to heart-pounding rhythms. When it comes to YUCA’s music, the band has a rule “write what comes naturally”. And what comes naturally has been described by fans as “uplifting, emotional & passionate music with hints of Beatles, U2, Radiohead and Muse”.
