Kelowna
Yacht Club
The History of KYC
During the fall of 1945, a small group of boating enthusiasts were interested in the future of boating and formed the Kelowna Yacht Club (“KYC", "Club”) to promote safe family boating on Okanagan Lake. At this time there were no docks or launch ramps into the lake. The first boat lunch was built in 1945, located where the moorage basin currently is. In the first few years, there were just over 60 members of the KYC.
The first clubhouse was located at 1414 Water Street, where Stuart Park has since been developed. The original clubhouse and the moorage basin went through a number of expansions and renovations to accommodate the demand for moorage and the popularity of joining the Club. In 2013, it was decided that a new clubhouse was required and it was replaced with what you see today, the larger modern design of the building was inspired by a large ship. When standing on the second floor deck out the main doors you will notice the nautical details and the alignment of the building was created to feel as though you are at the helm of a large ship.
Over the year the KYC facility has developed from a self-service with an honour payment system into a full-service yacht club with daily food and beverage offerings, daily and season features, and a vast number of special events throughout the year. The facility currently has a capacity of over 450 and operates with up to 120 full-time, part time and seasonal staff.
The Club operation is overseen by a member-elected Board of Directors, headed up by the Commodore. More details about the Board of Directors can be found on the next page.
Although the Club has changed a lot since 1945, the core values reaming the same. At the Kelowna Yacht Club, we are all about embracing the Lake Lifestyle.
