Suspension (Seating):

Purpose:

Suspension One: Stove Bench

Suspension Two: Tables & Chairs

Suspension Three: The Window Sills

The stove bench in this space is utilized most during the cold winter months since the building relies on the stove for all of its heat. The aqua pattern creates a focal point and draws emphasis. The black pattern connects the stove and bench through planar application.

The black tables and chairs mark the area in between the hot spaces (stove area) and cold spaces (window seat). They draw emphasis with their saturated black color. It is a very high contrast compared to the bright wall and ceiling color and concrete floor texture.

The window sill seating is utilized most during hot summer months when the building relies on the opened windows for air circulation. The black color of the sill and window create a frame looking outside. Again, the black color is emphasized because it a high constrast compared to the tan brick color.

[Project Description]

This commercial project examines the issues of food in the urban environment. This project was split into two phases; research and design. From my research in phase 1,discovered that lack of edcation correlated to both focus issues of food deserts and food waste. Solution for phase 2 would then be to create a space that fosters food education in three components; preschool level, school age level, and adult level. Achieved this by dividing the building into 3 areas; a food library, an indoor garden education space, and a preschool.

Prairie Pines Welcome Center Spring 2015 [Team Members] Jin Seok, Christine Reiners, & Morgan Ronspies [Size] 1,000 sq ft. [Location] Prairie Pines Lincoln, NE

[Project Description]

Group Project to redesign a Welcome Center for Prairie Pines. The intention for this project was to evoke past memories and promote the creation of new ones. Group was inspired by the tree tags in the arboretum. Used this concept to allow visitors to make their mark by engraving their own names on a tag and displaying it on the corn crib. Another way this concept was incorporated was through the overlapping of the new and old quonset. The historic part of the quonset is used for history display. The new addition is a flexible space that could be used for research display and be a meeting space.

[Material Analysis] Design Strategy:

For the small space, applied more textures and patterns to make the space feel more inhabitated ,since it is the space used the most.applied patterns and textures to the walls, but both have the same color scheme and are at unsaturated levels. This allows the space to not be too busy. In addition, applied the dark pattern to the ceiling to bring the scale of the space down. Finally, used the green color for the chairs to match the logo. Also created a distinct work zone on the floor by adding the yellow color from the logo. The medium sized space applied pattern and texture in more subtle ways to make the space feel less busy. Continued to apply the green color to the chairs and seating nook. Also applied a wood texture to the ceiling detail and the dark pattern on the ceiling to help with wayfinding. However, both the ceiling and floor of the table space is concrete to make the space feel more enclosed. Also applied the logo on the enclosure’s back wall to create a focal point.

Enclosure One: Entry Ceiling Detail

Enclosure Two: Pod

Enclosure Three: Conference Room Ceiling Detail

Enclosure One’s main purpose is wayfinding and is utilized as a focal point in this space. This enclosure is featured overhead and does not allow the user to engagewith it physically. It creates a sense of movement to the front reception desk. There is also a high constrast between the white disks and black ceiling.

Enclosure Two’s purpose to create an space that users can retreat to for group meetings, casual conversations, or relaxation. This enclosure allows the user to physically engage with it. The green color is emphasized against the white color of the outer shell. This enclosure creates a frame to outside as well.

Enclosure Three’s purpose to create a focal point above the conference table, bring the scale of the room down, and possibly assist with acoustics. This enclosure does not allow the user to physically engage with it. It is the focal point of the room with its very geometric form and warm wood tones which make the space feel inviting. It is also balanced with another wood shape extruding from a wall.
