A first chance to take stock of who we are, and what we’ve become 5TH ANNUAL NAPA VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL

Welcome!

Way back in the summer of 2009 when we decided to start a new film festival, many people thought we were about as wild-eyed and foolhardy as Napa Valley’s pioneering vintners dreaming of making wine as good as the French. At the same time, others encouraged us. With each conversation sharing our vision in the Valley and with colleagues in the film industry, more and more folks jumped on board to help—as founding patrons, sponsors, volunteers, and even staff once we had a little money cobbled together. Our first artists and audience members convened for a series of special screenings and conversations between May and September 2010, and for the November 2010 six-film mini-fest…all building towards our inaugural full scale Festival in the Fall of 2011. A fifth year is the first major milestone, akin in some ways to a five year high school or college reunion, a first chance to take stock of who we are and what we've become. Here in Wine Country, it is tempting to make another analogy, likening our young history to that of vintners anticipating making wine from their fruit for the first time after planting rootstock five years earlier. While we most certainly plan to serve up an exceptional experience for you with this year’s Festival, we are fortunate that we haven’t had to wait five years to savor the fruits of so many people’s collective labor. This year’s Festival is dedicated to the cinematic storytellers who share their beguiling art with us in the dark, to Napa Valley’s wizards of food, wine and hospitality who help us deliver an unparalleled experience, and to everyone who has helped us get to where we are today, especially those who’ve been with us from the beginning. On behalf of our board, year-round team, seasonal production crew, creative advisors, volunteers, sponsors and partners, artists and audiences, we both thank you and invite you to join us in toasting the first five years of the Napa Valley Film Festival, and the next five, and the next…! See you at the movies!

Festival Survival Guide

HOW TO FESTIVAL The Napa Valley Film Festival takes place November 11 – 15 (Wednesday through Sunday) in the four walkable villages of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga—where over 115 films, 300 filmmakers, 150 wineries and 30 chefs will actively engage our audiences. Each town has a Box Office, multiple NVFF theaters, a wine pavilion or wine stroll, “Passholder Perks” and special events taking place throughout each day.

FILM PROGRAM

From over 1,000 films submitted from around the world, we select 100 or so for the quality of their filmmaking and the compelling nature of their story lines. These films are grouped in competitive sections that are eligible for either juried or audience awards or both. These program sections include: • • • • • • •

Narrative Features Documentary Features The Lounge (Features & Shorts) Narrative Shorts Documentary Shorts Short Features Special Presentations

Our program also includes a selection of sneak preview screenings of important Awards Season films, frequently presented by the directors who attend along with writers, actors and producers. Always be sure to check our website at nvff.org for the most current and complete list and description of films and screening details.

FOOD & WINE

We’ve integrated Napa Valley’s incomparable food and wine into the film festival experience. You will enjoy wine at nearly every theater and Stella Artois at select locations. Wine pavilions or wine strolls are the place to be each afternoon. Food and wine are cleverly paired and served up at all of our special events, most notably the blowout Festival Gala and our Opening, Closing and Tribute Night Parties. Members of our Vintner Circle open their private estates to host our unique Vintner Circle Dinners and provide our winning filmmakers with large format collectible bottles.

Festival Survival Guide

ATTENDING

The best way to experience the Festival is with a pass. We offer passes at three levels: Festival Pass, Pass Plus, and our VIP Patron Circle. With a pass, you do not need individual screening tickets, attend as many screenings and panels as you’d like, and enjoy wine-tasting each afternoon along with an array of Passholder Perks offered throughout the Valley. Higher level passes include access to special events and receptions with our filmmakers and celebrity guests. For those with limited time or on a limited budget, we also offer Day Passes and last minute Rush Tickets, sold at the door to film screenings and panel discussions when seats remain available after passholders have been admitted. For full details, please see BOX OFFICE information (p.9) or visit nvff.org.

ACCESS TO THEATERS

There is an order to which audiences are admitted into our screenings. Members of our Patron Circle enter first, followed by Pass Plus holders, and then Festival Pass and Day Pass holders. Nonpassholders wait in a Rush Line and may purchase tickets if space remains available after all passholders have entered. All passholders must arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to show time. A pass does not guarantee a seat, so please be aware of venue capacities and arrive early for the most popular films. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so all individuals must be present in the theater to have claim to a seat (one individual per seat).

FILMMAKER Q&A'S

What truly makes a film festival a “festival” is the live participation by the writers, directors, actors and producers responsible for the wonderful films we get to see. Question and Answer sessions with the filmmakers follow almost every screening.

AUDIENCE AWARD VOTING

The Festival presents Audience Awards determined by popular vote. At most screenings, viewers will receive a ballot to rate the film. Please return the ballot at the end of the screenings. Voting ends Saturday night, and all winners are announced at the Awards Ceremony on Closing Night.

LODGING

Make your lodging plans early as rooms fill up quickly. Be sure to state that you are coming in for the Film Festival, as many lodging properties offer special Festival rates. All official Festival Lodging Partners can be found at nvff.org.

PASSHOLDER PERKS

All passholders may redeem perks at participating restaurants, wineries, and businesses throughout the Valley. When you pick up your pass, you’ll be provided with a Passholder Perks card. Simply flash your Passholder Perks card to receive special offers or discounts. For a complete list of perks, see PASSHOLDER PERKS (p.74) in this guide or visit nvff.org.

STAY CURRENT

Visit nvff.org on your desktop or mobile device and sign up for our NVFF email newsletter. The newsletter is the best way to ensure you stay current with NVFF news including any additions or changes to the Festival schedule.

STAY OUT LATE

After the last screen goes dark, Festival Villages are still alive. While Patron Circle Members and Pass Plus holders participate in various Special Events, there are also nightlife options that offer food and drink specials for Festival Pass and Day Pass holders. Check page 68 or nvff.org for more information.

GETTING AROUND THE VALLEY

Each Festival Village is approximately 9 miles apart as you travel up-and-down the valley, with nearly 30 miles between Napa and Calistoga. Travel time between villages can vary, especially on the weekends or during rush hour. Since many films screen at multiple theaters, we've made it easy for you to maximize your film, food and wine experiences each day without having to travel all over the Valley. If you do want to move around and explore different villages and venues, please, plan ahead and always Festival responsibly! Wine, dine, but please don’t drink and drive. There are a number of transportation options, including The Vine, taxi cabs, and Uber. New this year, The Vine is offering free rides for NVFF Passholders. Just show your pass as you get on the bus. Bus schedules are available at each of the Festival Box Offices. Book in advance with BEAU WINE TOURS, official luxury transportation service of NVFF. MENTION NVFF AND RECEIVE 15% OFF. THE LOUNGE The Lounge is home to an eclectic mix of NINE NARRATIVE FEATURES and a program of NINE SHORT FILMS. We created The Lounge to offer an alternative programming track to our core competitions. The films tend to be edgy, funny, dark, low-budget, fantastical, and mysterious, often in creative combinations. Each film also has an up-valley breakout screening, this year which takes place at our wonderful new theater at CAIRDEAN ESTATES featuring state-of-the-art 4K Home Theater Projection provided by SONY. Also new this year, we have a special Jury dedicated to The Lounge, so while you vote for your favorites in the Audience Awards balloting, our jurors will also be choosing theirs. ENJOY!

Education & Outreach Informing and inspiring the next generation Program Goals: • To expose students to films, filmmakers and subjects that open the conversation about critical, social relevant and timely issues in students’ lives by screening and discussing socially conscious films • To provide instruction and resources through select workshops, as well as internships and summer opportunities, that will inspire and motivate those students with a desire to pursue filmmaking as a means of self-expression • To reach more than 3,000 students, parents and other community members throughout the year through unique programs both in school and in the community

FILMMAKERS-IN-THE-SCHOOLS PROGRAM Filmmakers and subjects speak with Napa County students in their classrooms during the week of the festival. Teachers and students select the films they would like to screen in advance, and prepare for intensive discussions with the filmmakers and subjects of the films during the week of November 9. Right Footed (p. 40) Meet Jessica Cox, a courageous and inspirational woman born without arms: motivational speaker, mentor and advocate for people with disabilities. CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap (p. 37) Code exposes the dearth of American female and minority software engineers and explores the reasons for this gender gap and digital divide. 120 Days (p. 60) A law-abiding family of undocumented immigrants who have lived and worked in the United States for twelve years have just 120 days to figure out their future.

Bounce: How the Ball Taught the World to Play (p. 37) Bounce follows the bouncing ball from animal play through professional sports to video games, exploring why we play and what play says about who we are and where we are going as a civilization. The Mask You Live In (exclusively appearing in NVFF’s Filmmakers in the Schools Program) As a society, how are we failing our boys? The Mask You Live In looks at the sociological implications of the phrase “Be A Man” and how it plays out throughout a boy’s development.

WHAT’S GERMAN FOR “MOVE OVER”?

2015 LEXUS GS 350 F SPORT While we aren’t fluent in German, we certainly speak performance. And we’re not the only ones. AMCI tested the Lexus GS 350 F SPORT and concluded it has “better overall handling performance than the BMW 535i M Sport.” 1 When you experience this level of performance, there’s no going back.
