CHOICE, AVAILABILITY AND PROVEN DESIGN MAKES A T7 SWB A USED BUYING HIT

New Holland T7 SWB short standard wheelbase tractors took over from the higher powered T6000 series in 2011, with four Stage IIIB compliant models spanning a nominal 125 to 165hp or 171 to 212hp with power boost. The higher outputs also provided the model numbers, T7.170, T7.185, T7.200 and T7.210. Fresh styling and some model tweaks followed when Stage IV compliant engines arrived in 2016 (plus the more powerful 180/250hp T7.225), Stage V models arriving in 2021. Over a decade on, T7 SWB models are now a popular used buy, with decent choice to suit varied budgets.

It is a well-worn out piece of advice to start your used buying search early, but now is a great time to put out feelers for a tractor for delivery in 2025. Dealers typically have a used buyer lined up for trade-in models that will arrive in their yards in winter, so it may be worth seeing if you can be one of them. Nonfranchised dealers tend to hoover up higher hour T7 models offered to the trade later in the year as the T7 SWB makes a ‘safe’ buy thanks to its familiar mechanicals and good parts support.

… AND A LITTLE ON DEVELOPMENT

Original 2011 T7 SWB models share a great deal with previous generation ‘LWB’ T6000 series, with a move to Stage IIIB (Tier 4A) emission regulations, and with it the adoption of SCR and the need for Ad Blue. There were detail and styling tweaks made between the two series but the core elements of the range topping T6000 models was carried over to the SWB T7.

The revised Stage IV (Tier 4B) T7 models that arrived in 2016 had some updates and refreshed styling, with the 2021 Stage V (Tier 5) models pretty much maintaining this steady evolution approach. For some, this could suggest a T7 SWB tractor is not as ‘up to date’ as some of its competitors. Look at the new Horizon Ultra cab fitted to the New Holland T8 series and, yes, the existing Horizon cab of a T7 is now showing its 25-year plus design age. In the field, however, the T7 is certainly not likely to be at a disadvantage performance wise and for many it is the well-proven key components of engine, transmission and hydraulics that really counts.

T7 tractors with the entry-level Classic specification may come with Range Command semi-powershift or Power Command full-powershift transmissions together with mechanical hydraulics but still with the CCLS hydraulic pump; this will have a capacity of 113 litres per minute, all models having a separate power steering pump. Demand for these ‘entry-level’ Classic tractors is strong, used values regionally seeing SideWinder models with electronic valves and more advance spec not always commanding the premium you may expect.

SideWinder spec is the default for the AutoCommand only T7.250, with the popular T7.210 having this option available also for Range Command and Power Command transmissions. Electronic spool valves and a Command Grip and joystick are part of the package along with an IntelliView monitor.

WHAT’S NEW WITH STAGE V

New Holland T7 SWB models switched to Stage V (Tier 5) emission standards in 2021, with key developments as listed below. To avoid possible confusion, the Horizon Ultra cab launched on the T7 LWB Stage V models is not part of the SWB tractor’s development.

• Stage V emissions reduce particulate matter by a further 40%, achieved by adding a ‘clean-up’ catalyst within the SCR chamber.

• Stage IV engine service intervals of 600 hours increased to 750 hours. Transmission service increased to 1,500 hours.

• Fuel capacity increased to 330 litres (from 328 litres). New single tank on the LH side replaces the main and auxiliary tanks of Stage IV tractors. S models retain 260 litre tank capacity.

• Intelligent Trailer Braking System (ITBS), option for AutoCommand transmissions tractors either as a factory install or dealer unlock. (AC models back to 2018 can be modified with software upgrade). ITBS can improve tractor and trailer stability whilst decelerating with the CVT and engine braking. System estimates the Deceleration Force by comparing

the target vehicle speed versus actual vehicle speed whenever the driver requests a speed decrease, either by the CommandGrip or by releasing the drive pedal. The system adjusts the brake force applied with a measurement of transmission input torque, based on the flywheel torque sensor and Engine Control Unit data. This data is used to apply the trailer brakes with the appropriate pressure to improve the stability.

• Wiper moved from a high mount in the top of the cab screen to a low mount behind the dashboard. Sweep angle increased to 175 degrees.

• LED front indicators and side lights. Indicator, lights and wiper stalk in cab are upgraded to same automotive design used on T8 Genesis.

• Hydraulic pump flow increased to 150 litres (UK specification). Previously offered as an option. Stage IV models have a 113 litre pump as standard (150 litre a common upgrade, so check on a used buy).

• New option of four rear remotes with a divertor valve. Allows pick-up hitch integration without taking up two remotes.

• Telematics one year offer from new

T7 models were launched with the IntelliView III screen above, Stage IV models from 2016 having the updated IntelliView IV. The latter has seen a few tweaks for Stage V models launched in 2021 but looks the same. The III screen was prone to fading so check you can read it in bright sun. It is worth spending time working through the screen menus as it will reveal more than just operating hours. Hard to see in the picture, but the screen on the right has a panel showing the system is set up to run GPS services to include IntelliSteer.

• IntelliView changed. Incorporates with a New Holland to enable the operator to add quick access keys for most used features such as linkage drop rate.

WHAT’S USED

New Holland offer a choice of seat types for the T7, with the Stage IV models coming with a choice of the standard Comfort seat as pictured or a choice of Dynamic Comfort or Auto Comfort seats as options. It follows that the higher spec seats offer more features, with heating and ventilation for the Auto variant, but the entry level seat will be fine for most if it is working as it should, the backrest swivelling to make it easier to look over the shoulder when using rear mounted kit. If the seat is in poor condition, it could suggest the tractor has been worked hard.

As a used buyer, a tractor series that has undergone steady evolution over several years is a key plus. So is knowing that if something does go wrong there will be someone who knows how to fix it.

BEFORE YOU START

As with any tractor, start with the basics: specification, service and usage history, hours and condition, not neglecting tyre size and wear. Get your timing right and you should be able to find a tractor of the right specification and in the condition you are after. Stick to ‘must have’ features, with the most obvious including:

• Transmission type.

• Power.

• 40kph ECO or 50kph.

• Number of rear spools.

• Front linkage (with or without pto).

• Front loader or loader ready specification.

A failed lens seal on the oval halogen lights fitted to early T7 tractors can let in water, leading to the reflector losing its sheen. Later lighting packages proofed more resilient, with LED lighting on Stage IV tractors delivering much improved lighting. On a used buy, consider upgrading the work lights if the originals are past their best.

The mechanical parking brake is easy to overlook, but it needs to be checked as a floppy lever could indicate the brakes need some attention. An electronic parking brake is an option on both Range and Power Command tractors, Auto Command having this as standard.

Complimenting the nominal 8,257kg (6,616kg at 610mm from the ball ends) capacity rear linkage, the factory fit optional front linkage is rated at 3,568kg, many having seen service only to carry a weight pack. A linkage and front pto can be retrofitted to a used buy. Note hydraulic couplings and raise lower switch (inset).

If you are after a dealer sourced tractor, give them your key spec demands and let them try and source a tractor for you. This should eliminate those tractors without your key ‘must haves’.

SPECS AND CHECKS

The bulk of T7 tractors sold in the UK will have Terraglide II front axle suspension, front axle brakes coming as standard with the 50km/hr transmission. 40km/hr and 40km/ hr ECO tractors may have front axle brakes as they are available as a factory option.

On T7 Stage IIIB tractors, failing to grease the front axle propshaft could see the latter stiffen, in turn leading to the potential to damage the front diff oil seals. The design was altered for Stage IV tractors but still check.

Terraglide front axles pivot points do wear, clonking noises over rough ground and when braking hard suggesting attention is needed. If the front ‘bounces’ the suspension accumulators need attention.

Wear in the power steering can be a problem on tractors that have done a lot of work with heavy front ballast, with typical symptoms including a notchy feel when turning from lock to lock. Poor tracking and worn track rods are par for the course on any tractor that has racked up a few hours, so check carefully. If new front tyres are fitted, make sure the tracking was checked at the same time. It would be a shame to scrub the shoulders of expensive new rubber.

• Three-year telematics from new common. Check ability to extend on a used buy.

Options that can be retrofitted by a dealer include:

• Intelligent Trailer Braking software unlock

• GPS receiver signal unlock upgrades

• Front PTO (and a front linkage if not fitted)

• Intelliturn unlock

• Isobus Task controller unlock.

The air braking system is tucked into the offside wheel arch, New Holland extending the plastic shield to help prevent muck build up. It can pay to have the system looked over by a dealer if buying a tractor privately, the more so if there is evidence of corrosion or damage to any of the plastic encasing the various working elements of the system.

WHAT’S USED

New Holland has pretty much stuck with the same dash since the Horizon cab was launched a couple of decades ago, with blue-backed dials (upper inset) making way for black dials (lower inset) for Stage IV models in 2016.

T7000 and early Stage III T7 tractors are fitted with Bosch spool valves. Give these a good looking over as leaks and problems caused by contaminated oil can be costly to remedy; if a single valve has a problem, the entire block may need to be changed.

On Stage IV tractors onwards, the Faster remote valves are fitted in individual pairs as opposed to in a block. If a set develops a problem, replacements are less expensive than the earlier Bosch design.

Fast Steer adds an inner rim to the standard steering wheel that when depressed, or a button is depressed on the armrest joystick, accelerates the steering to speed lock to lock turns. This option is not over common.

Factory fitted front linkages are fully integrated into the chassis of the tractor and have a capacity of 3,568kg. An OEM linkage can be retro fitted (or one from a third party) but cost this against an alternative tractor with a linkage already installed, the more so if you are also after a front pto. Front linkage hydraulics can be either plugged into the rear remotes or mid-mount valves controlled via the joystick in the cab; the latter can also be retrofitted by a dealer.

All T7 models are powered by the same family of six-cylinder ECOBlue 6.7litre engine, with SCR selective catalytic reduction. New Holland engine service intervals are 600hours on Stage IIIB and Stage IV tractors, 750 on Stage V models, subject to using the correct oil and filters. On a used buy, it may be worth checking with a dealer to see if there are recommended additional items that need a check at certain hours. A sound tractor may have an expensive service coming up, so it is worth factoring this into the used buying costs.

Entry-level Range Command transmissions offer clutch-free shifts for the six-speeds within each of the three standard ranges, the ‘extra’ 19th gear that delivers either a 40 km/hr at 1,890rpm (based upon a T7.210 with 580/70R42 tyres) obviously only coming into play in transport. Automated field and transport can be selected although it will only work within the selected range.

Power Command offers a full-powershift for all ratios and between ranges. Power Command again offers automated field and transport settings, but the system works across all gears. When swapping between ranges, Power Command automated range changes can be a bit abrupt but smooth out when the transmission is warm.

As an option, both Range and Power Command tractors can have an electronically engaged parking brake. Both transmissions are offered with a creep speed package that increases the ratios on offer from 19x6

WHAT’S USED

TAKE TIME TO LOOK OVER THE ENGINE

New Holland FPT six-cylinder 6.7 litre ECOBlue power units have been around for long enough to have earned a good dependability record, with service intervals increasing from 500 to 650 and now 750 hours since the first T7000 models appeared back in the early 2000s. The key used checks include looking for leaks, checking the water trap is filled with clean fuel, ensuring the oil is not filthy (and is showing above minimum on the dip stick) and that the radiators and air filters are clean.

A key to longevity and future dependability is to keep on top of servicing using the recommended engine oil and filters plus using

forward and reverse to 29x12. Creep speeds drop to a minimum of around 1.9km/hr.

If either of these transmissions has a poor shift between gears within the selected range, or a bad range change when warmed through, it may mean the transmission needs calibrating. On T6000 tractors the procedure on how to do this is outlined in the operator’s manual. On T7 models, calibration became a dealer job, some tractors needing

a quality AdBlue and ensuring the fuel is clean and not degraded. If buying a high hour tractor with a less than decent service history from an auction or privately, it is well worth calling the local New holland dealer to see if the tractor has been serviced by them in the past.

If you have bought a non-dealer sourced T7 with in excess of 5,000 to 6,000 hours on the clock, it is worth having the tractor looked over by a New Holland dealer or specialist. A compression test, injector function check and oil analysis to pick up internal wear is worth considering. A dealer engine check and a few tweaks could save fuel and head off a costly repair.

attention between services. Range and Power Command is not offered on the T7.250 Auto Command has become increasingly popular across all T7 models, with 40km/hr, 40 km/hr ECO and 50 km/hr choices. The bulk of UK models sell with the latter. Auto Command exploits available engine torque to reduce fuel consumption, with the engine spinning at around 1,700rpm at 50km/hr if conditions allow.

Auto Command is now a well proven transmission, but this is not the same as suggesting it will never run into problems. Auto Command should deliver a smooth ‘shift’, so be wary if the tractor is either hesitant or less than smooth. Use both the travel pedal and the armrest mounted CommandGrip controller; there are Auto, Cruise, Manual and PTO modes on offer but you will struggle to try everything on a test drive.

WHAT’S USED

Although the IntelliView IV screen is linked to the tractor, its easy removal makes it a prime target for thieves. Never assume the screen ‘just works’ and ensure a used buy is delivered with its screen.

New Holland launched the T7 range in 2011, the pictured long wheelbase T7.235 having pretty much the same overall look as its T7040 predecessor, as do all first gen T7 models. 2016 Stage IV models have extra engine bay ventilation, including gills in the bonnet at the cab end. Current Stage V from 2021 look much the same as the Stage IV models and even share the same overall specs as their predecessors but with some worthwhile tweaks. (See ‘What’s new with Stage V)

The load sensing CCLS hydraulics only work when there is demand for hydraulic flow. Original Stage IIIB T7 SWB models have a standard pump flow of 113l/min, or 150l/min with MagaFlow option. Stage IV models saw the output for T7 SWB Auto Command models increase to 140l/min or 160l/min as an option.

Bosch electronic remote valves and slices are fitted to Stage IIIB tractors, subsequent Stage IV tractors switching to RACINE Faster. Bosch outlets and slices are less tolerant of contaminated oil than RACINE Faster units, the latter featuring individual repairable slices.

On Classic spec tractors, up to four Deluxe mechanical rear remote valves can be fitted, this increasing to five for the electro-hydraulic alternatives offered on SideWinder models. Both types can be operated via a joystick option, the latter taking over the control of up to three mid-mount valves if specified. Hydraulic couplings wear out and loose the protective covers that can help keep out muck. Obvious, but well worth having sorted out on a used buy.

WHAT’S USED

A quick and easy check to spot a Stage IV versus a Stage V model is to look at the position of the windscreen wiper. If it is mounted at the top of the screen, as pictured, it is a Stage IV tractor.

The main hydraulic service interval is at 1,200 hour intervals on Stage IIIB and Stage IV tractors, rising to 1,500 hours on Stage V models. As a guide, Power Command models will need around 100 litres of oil, plus new filters, during the hydraulic service and this will add a big chunk of money to the bill.

The rear linkage on T7 models is clearly subject to wear, so check for the obvious play in the linkage and arms plus the cross shaft for lateral wear. Lower link stabilisers include screw or bar and pin designs. Look them over and try to adjust them as they are obviously subject to wear and damage. Also ensure the coupling balls are included with the tractor and that the top link adjusts in and out. Make sure the drawbar and pick-up hook are in good order.

A choice of 100mm or 110mm rear linkage lift rams were offered on T7 Stage IIIB models, but the latter were the default fit in the UK as they boost lift capacity across all models by up to 750kg. Still check as smaller 100mm units may have been fitted to the odd tractor.

Stage IIIB tractors are fitted with a Sauermann pick-up hitch with twin clevis locking hooks. The same company makes the later type of hitch fitted to Stage IV tractors, the hitch securing via a pin system. The latter is less liable to fail to lock the hitch up, a pop out indicator sticking out if the pick-up has not latched securely.

Moving to the cab, it will be familiar to

anyone who has driven a New Holland tractor in the past 25 years. Various spec packages offered a choice of different seats, a leather covered steering wheel and climate control, but clearly you get what is offered.

Do not assume all tractors will have Comfort Ride cab suspension. It was an option, albeit one that many dealers would consider essential when ordering a tractor for stock. Not known for problems other than wear related, listen out for noises under the cab floor that could indicate wear in the front pivot points and poor damping that leads to a ‘see-saw’ after traversing a bump. The cab should cushion shock loads and settle rather than rock once the impact has been absorbed.

In the cab look out for deteriorating switchgear. The soft rubberised covers on key items, such as the paddles used to work the electronic remotes and buttons on the joystick, can become sticky and the labelling on high hour tractors may have worn off. If a glazed roof panel is fitted look for water stains on the headlining. This was quite common on earlier T7 models but less so on later Stage IV tractors.

At launch, the T7 series were fitted with carbon weave plus Kevlar inboard rear discs that were designed to improve stopping power and rid the tractors of the brake squeal associated with sintered bronze discs. These ‘new’ discs worked well but if they were worked hard they could break up, causing

problems that cropped up frequently enough to see New Holland revert back to the proven, if occasionally noisy, bronze discs in 2014.

The usual test for the rear brakes is to just try them out but bear in mind the age old trick of checking the hydraulic pressure too. Filters blocked with bits of worn brake will trigger a low-pressure warning that you should be able to pick up.

The front axle hub brakes are standard on 50km/hr models but are frequently specified on other models too. Trailer air brakes are also standard on 50km/hr models. It is recommended that the braking system has a check if you source a tractor from a non-dealer source.

SUMMARY

Tractors with a cast iron service history will always command a premium over those with a chequered record, the latter tending to be pretty much what you would expect for a tractor that has been in service for a decade or more. The key to securing a sound used buy is to take your time researching available models, talking to dealers, and seeking the advice of those who work these popular tractors.

Pricing is tough to outline. Some of the machines offered for sale on the internet have a temping price but when you ring up for info it is not unusual to find it attaches to a tractor that has been sold. Fresh stock coming in often seems to have a higher sticker price, this reflecting the higher trade in value dealers need to offer customers to soften the blow of financing a new replacement. Inflation is a double-edged sword, those boasting that they have sold a tractor for what they paid for it not mentioning how much they had to pay for the model they bought to replace it.

As a used buy, a T7 SWB tractor, particularly the popular T7.210, is a sound choice, regardless of spec or transmission variant. There are good numbers available, the design is well-proven and despite these models seeing little in the way of change these tactors still deliver good performance and fuel economy. CHRISTMAS EVENTS

Things kick off on Sunday 15 December at the South of England Showground, Ardingly RH17 6TL when the Bradley Woodward organised 10.30am charity tractor road run takes place.

This year it is in aid of St Peter & St James Hospice and Kangaroos Fun Disability Clubs. The entry fee is £15 per vehicle and there will be prizes for the cleanest and best Xmas decorated vehicle. The road run which this year is in its fifth year takes approximately two hours to complete and travels all around Haywards Heath and back to the showground. It starts at 10am and festive music, mince pies and light refreshments are all part of the start of this event. The run concludes at The Six Bells, Chiddingly a very popular hostilely, where refreshments and food are all part at this lunchtime venue. On average 150 tractors of all ages take part and you are all welcome here.

Moving to East Anglia, The Larling Angel Charity Road Run takes place at Sallow Lane, Larling, Norwich NR16 2QU. Why not have breakfast at The Larling Angel first? And then take part in the road run. It costs £20 to enter this charity event with a brass plaque given to each road runner at the end of the day. This event sees well over 200 entries made up of these days of 60% modern tractors and 40% classic and vintage.

When some shows are going through a shaky situation Kelsey Media’s Fiona Mercer (publishing MD) with Gareth Beesley (division publisher) and show organiser Mark Woodward signed a deal on Thursday 24 October to see Tractor World stay at The Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire.

This will see Tractor World take place here for the next four years. Organiser Mark Woodward said the show has been a great success since it was started in 2001 and continues to develop year in year out and saw its largest crowd in 2024 and that also applies to traders as well. “With the added edition of the new Kildare Hall it gives us more inside room for more development of the show,” he added which takes place on 22-23 February. Howard Pugh has already had great interest in the Saturday sale and its lining up very well. Already over 300 tractors have booked in to the show and we are looking for many more from horticultural to classic tractors. BODLE STREET GREEN DRIVE IT DAY

Yes it’s time to look to future events in 2025 and one to get things going for the outside season is Peter Love’s Bodle Street Green Charity Drive It Day, which this year takes place earlier than normal on Sunday 6 April in the village centre. The 2024 event saw 324 classic and vintage vehicles take part and over 60 tractors took part in the 10.15am morning road run. But that’s only just part of the day which sees preservation cars, lorries, steam, stationary

engines and models coming to this small village in East Sussex. In the village hall especially for children and grown ups will be 10 model railways and other engineering models.

SUPREME PLOUGHING

James Whitty was pronounced the Supreme British Ploughing Champion on Sunday 13 October as dusk descended at the end of a well organised 73rd British National Ploughing Championships, held at Thoresby Estate, Perlethorpe, near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire.

On the Saturday the weather forecast was turned on its head when it was heavy showers from when the competitors set their opening furrows out in the sandy loam soil which in places was rather stoney, to when the sun showed itself through the clouds at just after 2pm when the plots were to be finished. Many did not have a cab and got a good soaking in the cold and very fresh conditions, but everyone smiled throughout the day.

The site was excellent as were the marshals and friendly members of the Society of Ploughman lead by the ever jolly and courteous chairman Mark Turner who makes a good leader. In the reversible ‘World Style’ class local boy Will Tupper from Bignor, Pulborough, West Sussex using his John Deere 6200 and Kverneland plough finished fourth on the Saturday and qualified for the final on the Sunday. Here he went on to finish third with 316 points with ex champion Michael Chappell finishing second on 335 points and Ian Brewer from Cornwall was in fine form all weekend and took the 2024 title on 361 points. In conclusion it’s good to see someone like Will doing so well as there has been a famine of National standard ploughman in the South East for some years now.

With over 70 tractors on offer at the 23 October Euro Auctions sale, there was a lot to interest the prospective bidders at their Leeds base. As ever they paraded onto the selling ramp in front of an expectant crowd with some top notch ready to work examples rubbing shoulders with those that were in poorer condition and needed restoration. As ever though, all sold. Here are some of the tractors that were on offer and the prices attained.

First up were a selection of crawler tractors where a 2004 Caterpillar Challenger MT845 that was showing 8,710 hours on the clock came out on top when it sold for £22,500.

Then came the regular tractors where the most expensive turned out to be a 2021 JCB Fastrac 4220 that was showing 2,908 hours on the clock. In superb shape, it went on to sell for £75,000 after some determined bidding grade 10.

The best of the Massey Fergusons in the sale was this 7718S that dated from 2020. Complete with front linkage and in superb condition, the MF went on to sell for £34,000

In solid looking condition, this 2013 Case Puma 230 CVX that was showing 2,505 hours on the clock managed to sell for a respectable £26,000

Following on was a series of John Deere tractors that also caught the eye. Out first was a 6175R that dated from 2022 and was fitted with front linkage and pto. Showing 4,957 hours on the clock and in great condition, the 6175R sold for £60,000 grade 11, while not far behind were a couple of JD 6155Ms from the same year, they each made £56,000 grade 10.

Next was New Holland tractors and starting things off were a couple of T7.210s that dated from 2021 grade 10. There wasn’t much to choose between them, both were in excellent condition, and were showing around 4,000 hours on the clock. The similarities didn’t stop there, as both sold for £49,000, with a further example making £47,000.

Also worthy of note was a 2013 Case Puma 230 CVX that was showing 2,505 hours on the clock grade 10. It looked to be in solid working condition, and went on to sell for £26,000 while a 2008 Fendt 933 with 14,219 hours behind it also looked to do well with all those hours on the clock at £32,000 grade 10.

There were several Massey Ferguson tractors in the sale, most of which looked to be rather work-worn, while others were looking towards possible restoration. Standing out though was a 7718S that dated from 2020 grade 10 sold for £34,000.

The Ford name was also well-represented with a series County’s being offered for sale. Coming out on top, price wise, was a very rare 764 that dated from 1985 which had been painted yellow at some time during its life and carries a Perkins engine which 50 did of this model. The reimported tractor sold for just £14,000 grade 2, while not far behind was an undated 774 that was fitted with a blade and sold for £12,000 grade 9.7, while an original looking 944 made just £7,000 grade 2/3 and was a bargain estimated to be worth £15,000.

All in all, it was another successful auction held at Euro Auction’s Leeds base, with a wide variety of tractors on offer, from age, condition, manufacturer, and prices achieved.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

The weather held dry for the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show over 9-10 November, the last big event of its kind this year. A very good crowd was noted at the event and people spoke to me from all parts of the UK and Ireland, north and south of the border and from The Netherlands and Canada. It was a great place to socialise and catch up before closing the hatches for winter.

This year’s main feature was the FOFH ‘Diamonds Are Forever Jubilee Celebration’ - 60 years of the iconic Massey Ferguson 135 (1964-79). They were made principality at the now long gone Banner Lane, Coventry factory (now a housing estate) and secondly at the Beauvais, France site, which today is the main AGCO Massey Ferguson manufacturing tractor plant along with their smaller Brazilian facility.

RON GREET

It’s with great sadness that we have to report the passing of the amazing Ron Greet of Broadhempston, Devon.

He died at his home with his loving family and dogs by his side, on Wednesday 18 September 2024, aged 79 years. Those of you who were looking for tractor parts came in contact with him regularly and have nothing but good to say about him.

He was a large man and a diabetic for decades, he made the best of his situation and was married to Gill and they had six children. The funeral service was held at St Peter and St Paul's Church,

1964 Smithfield Show, Earls Court (were you there?). As well as celebrating the fact it was the 60th anniversary of the MF, the Friends of Ferguson Heritage along with The Ferguson Club members were going for a Guinness Book of Records of MF 135s. The tractors were placed in the paddock in front of the Sir John Eastwood Buildings which also housed many more MFs and Ferguson tractors and the FOFH stand of course. Now my understanding of the record they needed to beat was approximately 225 that was set in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, was that 12 years ago now? However was it officially confirmed with Guinness Book of Records? I am not so sure. Here at Newark some 203 135s were placed around the showground, what an amazing achievement, congratulations to everyone involved. Do make a date for next year’s show which takes place on 8-9 November.

The amazing Ron Greet who had great knowledge and knew when he had a good deal at hand

Broadhempston on Tuesday 15 October and was packed to capacity, followed by a private cremation. Ron will be sorely missed by all collectors, but the business carries on lead by his son Keith and is open over the Christmas period on 27 Wednesday to 29 Friday 8-5pm and on Saturday 30 December 8-12 noon and will be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, business resumes on 2 January.

AF SERIES TAKES AXIAL-FLOW

PRINCIPLE INTO NEW CAPACITY

A new capacity class is being added to the Case IH Axial-Flow range for 2024, with the European launch of the new AF9 and AF10 combines. They share a ground-up new design providing significant capacity advances from front to rear, while maintaining the simple yet effective Axial-Flow principles of single-rotor threshing and separation.

The AF9 and AF10 launch completes the Case IH ‘Year of the Combine’ that began with the Axial-Flow 160 and 260 series release. Case IH now offers the industry’s largest line of single-rotor combines, staying true to a system it pioneered in 1977.

MORE POWER, WIDER HEADERS, ENHANCED INTAKE

The new models feature key components designed to minimize total cost of harvesting for the largest farming and contracting operations. The AF10 is powered by a 775hp FPT Cursor 16 engine, while the

AF9 features an FPT Cursor 13 producing 635hp. Both units are mounted lengthways for simplicity of drive and efficiency of power transmission, with engine rpm when harvesting lowered from 2,100rpm to 1,900rpm, boosting fuel efficiency. Service intervals have been extended from 600 hours/one year to 750 hours/two years, with additional operating cost benefits.

AF10 grain tank capacity is 20,000 litres –the joint largest in the industry for reduced unloading downtime – with a 210 l/sec unloading rate, while comparable figures for the AF9 are 16,000 litres and 159 l/sec. There are four unloading auger length options to match different header widths, while a pivoting spout aids even unloading, and cross-auger shutoff ensures the unloading auger is emptied if partunloading the tank.

A half-rate unloading shut-off feature on the AF10 enables easy topping-off of loads. Up front, the AF9 can be fitted with draper

headers up to 15.2m (50ft). To match the additional capacity of the AF10, units up to 18.6m (61ft) are possible. These wider widths not only allow operators to exploit the full capacity of these combines, but also mean every field is harvested in fewer passes, boosting productivity. Beyond their power, cutting capacity and grain holding ability, multiple other advances ensure the new models make their mark at the very top of the combine sector. The feeder house, which has a lift capacity of up to 6,800kg to accommodate the wider headers, is also significantly wider to match the greater crop intake. Standard lateral tilt and front face adjustment aid precise contour-following and assist with header attachment. The feeder chains are powered by a fixed or optional PowerPlus CVT drive, while a patented Synchronized Feed System (SFS) 450mm lateral feeding rotor smooths crop transfer to the threshing element that leads the Axial-Flow rotor.

WHAT’S NEW

COMPLETELY NEW AFXL AXIALFLOW ROTOR

The new 762mm-diameter AFXL rotor is the longest in the industry, at 3.67m, boosting crop flow, fuel efficiency and straw quality, while minimising grain damage and maximising separation. Total threshing and separation area is up to 5.1m2. The AFXL rotor features six modules rather than four, fitted with 40 standard raspbars, 12 spiked raspbars and eight HX raspbars. HX units work in a stepped area of the rotor cage and blend the spiked raspbars’ height with the standard units’ profile, with a steeper sidewall angle that speeds crop flow between the threshing and separation zones. Remote vane adjustment allows for instant response to changing conditions. Driven by PowerPlus CVT, in the event of a blockage the rotor can – simultaneously with the SFS – be easily reversed from the cab.

NEW CROSS-FLOW CLEANING PLUS

The new Cross-Flow Cleaning Plus system has the capacity to match the crop volume that comes into these new combines at their

full capability. At 8.76m2, the twin-element system offers a total cleaning area that is the largest in the industry, supported by a larger Cross-Flow fan. The new cleaning shoe features two automatic crossdistribution control mechanisms, one on the grainpan and one on the upper sieves, guaranteeing an even cleaning shoe load in all conditions and allowing side-slope compensation of up to 28%.

Chopper options include a MagnaCut integrated unit for corn/maize, beans and dry wheat straw, with spreading capability up to 13.5m/45ft. A MagnaChop option suits users working with higher straw volumes and seeking a finer chop. Spreading at up to 18m/61ft, it includes remote speed selection, remote chop/drop selection and remote engagement of counterknives, with radarequipped hydraulically-powered spreaders.

MORE OPERATOR COMFORT

The revised cab interior features a comprehensive suite of precision technologies, including dual Pro 1200 displays to simplify machine management

and enable easy monitoring and operation of multiple functions through customisable displays, plus Harvest Command™ combine automation and Row Guide Pro™. In addition, the introduction of Connectivity Included* enables seamless transmission of yield and machine data directly to the new Case IH FieldOps™ app, offering farmers a complete data management solution for their operations.

There are also more in-cab control features for from-the-seat operation of less commonly-used functions, including remote feeder and rotor reverse procedures, rotor gear selection, chopper speed selection, unloading speed choice and chopper knife engage/ disengagement. Elsewhere, proven Case IH technology features include Harvest Command automation that continuously adjusts settings according to the operator’s desired focus on grain saving, grain quality or throughput. Comfort-wise, upgraded seating includes swivelling, air conditioning, heating and massage features.

KUBOTA CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF THE M7 SERIES WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW M7004 TRACTOR

NEW CLAYDON PRODUCTS TO DEBUT

Claydon, the European market leader in direct drilling technology with its OptiTill® crop establishment system, will exhibit three new products at LAMMA 2025 (NEC, Birmingham, 15-16 January 2025). The Claydon stand (Number 6.600) will include the company’s new Evolution Front Hopper, a 4m version of its Evolution Drill Toolbar with twin-tine fertiliser placement, and a Claydon Mole Drainer. Claydon will also exhibit a 6m T6 Hybrid trailed drill, a 3m M3F Evolution mounted drill with grain and fertiliser, and a 9m Straw Harrow.

David Furber, Claydon’s Sales Manager for the UK and ROI, stated: “We will use LAMMA 2025 to promote the new Claydon Evolution Drill Toolbar and Evolution Front Hopper, showcasing our ability to offer flexible seed/fertiliser placement, meeting the requirements of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) schemes and

growing companion crops. The fact that we also have this option available on our 3m M3F Evolution and 6m T6 trailed drills demonstrates how we can offer farmers the option of generating additional income through the SFI, with ideal seed placement.”

The Evolution Drill Toolbar can be used in conjunction with the Evolution Front Hopper and is available in widths of 3m, 4m, 4.5m, 4.8m, 5m or 6m. The standard specification includes one distribution head with 38mm seed delivery hoses, but a second distribution head can be optioned, allowing fertiliser to be supplied to either the front leading tine or rear seeding tine.

With a total capacity of 2,750 litres, split 45/55, the Evolution Front Hopper is pressurised to ensure reliable high-volume material delivery to the rear distribution heads. Twin metering units deliver either mixed or separated seed/fertiliser flows to the rear-mounted drill, a simple airline box

selector diverting the flow of material to the distribution pipes or combining the total output into one pipe. An ISOCAN terminal controls all front hopper functions and allows variable rate seeding, depending on the task controller and licence key.

ISOBUS compatible, the Evolution Front Hopper is supplied with small, medium or large diameter interchangeable metering wheels to suit a wide range of seeds and fertilisers. Weighing 730kg, it measures 2,476mm wide, 1,803mm high and 1,619mm long, incorporates two hopper sensors providing ‘low level’ and ‘empty’ warnings, work lights, two road vision cameras, a toolbox and foldable front footstep. Options include 550kg of ballast, plus packer wheels with passive steering and wheel scrapers.

The single-leg Claydon Mole Drainer combines the benefits of mounted and trailed designs without the drawbacks of

either, enabling mole drains to be formed easily and accurately. The user-friendly design means that it is easy to adjust and even on very heavy land can be handled by a well-ballasted 200hp tractor.

Mounted on the tractor’s rear threepoint linkage the implement features a long, narrow beam which allows the 75mm diameter mole bullet and following 100mm ceramic expander to run parallel to it, producing a uniform, stable channel

at the correct depth and angle. The design also avoids excessive friction between the beam and soil surface, minimising draft requirement and fuel use.

The unique oscillating headstock features a swivel joint which makes the Claydon Mole Drainer extremely easy to manoeuvre and allows it to reach further into headland ditches or over drains. Because the narrow beam is held in the upright position there is no need for outrunner skids and the angle

of the bullet can be precisely adjusted. Locked in place by a steel wedge, the blade pivots on three pins and the bullet angle is controlled by the narrow 200mm wide front skid, allowing mole draining through standing crops with little damage.

Chains linking the oscillating headstock to the beam allow the tractor to turn easily and progressively lift the beam, enabling the mole to ski out of the ground gently with minimal soil disturbance.

HARVESTER IMPRESSES GROWERS AT DEMONSTRATION DAY

On 22 October 2024 NP Seymour hosted an exclusive demonstration of the ERO Grapeliner 7000 series self-propelled mechanical grape harvester at Greyfriars Vineyard in Surrey.

Attendees had the chance to see this advanced machine in action, including being able to sit in the cab with contractor and operator Sam Barnes to see how the cab’s central location, glass floor, camera system and auto steering option all help make driving this impressive bit of kit as easy as possible.

“Overcoming the wet weather conditions that have impacted the 2024 season, the Grapeliner’s performance impressed those present, proving that it’s built to handle even the most demanding harvest conditions and is well-equipped for UK vineyards,” said Claire Seymour, director of NP Seymour. “We were also very grateful to have Lukas from

ERO with us, who provided expert insights into the self-propelled mechanical grape harvester’s capabilities.”

with the quality and reliability. The harvesters they produce are no different, and the Grapeliner 7000 series is packed with innovative features that distinguish it as one of the top choices for mechanical grape harvesting worldwide,” said Claire.

For more than 40 years, ERO has been building and selling self-propelled harvesters. The self-propelled machine also features a unique three-stage harvest cleaning system to deliver the purest grape yield with a cross-air nozzle and leaf rake eject up to 70% of leaves before they reach

the conveyor belt, reducing juice and fruit loss.

Unlike other self-propelled harvesters, which feature an offset cab, the ERO Grapeliner cab is centrally mounted and also features a glassed-in floor which means the operator has a better perspective of where the machine is in relation to the rows.

For easy operation, the Grapeliner was the first grape harvester to feature a one-sided unloading conveyor. NP Seymour has further modified the chute to better suit UK growers, allowing them to fill one bin at a time. The Multiclean from Clemens has long been the benchmark for weed control without soil disturbance, tackling all weed types effectively without damaging the vines. The Twin Peaks is front mounted, either using the tractors existing front linkage, or to decrease overall length, using a compact console to replace the front lift arms. Visibility is excellent due to each mast being mounted either side of the central console, rather than in the centre like a single lift mast tool carrier. Hitching and unhitching is made easy by the purpose-built stand.

The Twin Peaks can be controlled either by ISOBUS fed from the tractor or using the

innovative C-Control Smarti joystick- this allows width, tunnel width, height and angle adjustments and hydraulic flow control from a single handgrip.

The Smarti joystick works via Wi-Fi to connect to a smartphone app, where different user settings, machines and button layouts can be selected based on the task at hand. Hydraulic flows and actuation speeds can also be set here, to save adjusting flows separately on the tractor – hydraulic flow can be controlled to each side independently, enabling machines to be shut off at the ends of unequal rows. For work on rough ground, the handgrip is equipped with three thumb joysticks. This means you can trim or defoliate at speed.

LATEST INNOVATION IN SPECIALITY CROP MANAGEMENT

KFAST (Kubota Fede Autonomous Spraying Technology) is an autonomous sprayer concept for speciality crops designed to meet EU regulations and objectives of the Green Deal.

The KFAST robot concept, jointly developed by Kubota and FEDE, autonomously applies phytosanitary treatments and offers the option of remotecontrol guidance. Its structural design and newly developed 4x4 traction ensure smooth movement, precise turning, and accurate positioning in the narrowest rows of specialty crop fields. This large-capacity autonomous sprayer can be equipped with various air systems to meet the specific requirements of different plantations.

Ongoing treatments are monitored and displayed on the Specialty Crops Platform (SCP), Fede's digital agronomic management tool. In addition, KFAST sends alerts in case of incident or parameter out of range, including the detection of empty spraying and diesel tank to autonomously return to the station for refilling. Once the treatment is completed, all the data is registered, providing real traceability and

required information to generate the digital farm book.

KFAST will substantially increase the productivity and efficiency of work in the plantation, since a single operator can manage four robots at a time and enables to carry out night-time tasks. With aims to be a solution to the lack of labour problem, as well and the generational renewal, in the agricultural sector. Furthermore, it improves the occupational safety and health by eliminating the risks of accidents and drastically reducing occupational exposure to pesticides.

REAL TIME SPRAYING ADJUSTMENT

Once the work order is received, Fede's autonomous sprayer concept goes to the assigned row to start the treatment. KFAST, equipped with the AIs system, an innovative technology that performs high-precision treatments through image capture and AI processing. The robot adapts the spraying in real time with individualised control of the nozzles to adjust the application tree by tree while maintaining a constant pressure and

application flow in each open nozzle with a homogeneous distribution and deposition of the treatment.

KFAST concept stands out for its remarkable reduction in pesticide use and soil degradation, both key objectives in the EU Green Deal. The system registers savings in the use of pesticides of up to 40%, according to the field tests results carried out within the LIFE-AIs project, which increase significantly when carrying out treatments based on the prescription of variable application maps (VRA). At the same time, it relieves soil compaction by moving only 4 wheels always following the same axis, reducing the number of tons supported by the soil and minimising displacements. Additionally, the indicators generated by KFAST image capture offer updated data on the state of the plantation, valuable information that can be used by third parties to offer their agronomic services. KFAST is distinguished for being an open system that allows the integration a wide range of service providers such as pest detection, yield prediction, farm management information systems, among others.

NEW 1,400M HOSE REELER

Slurry and digestate management specialist Tramspread has added a new larger-capacity random wrap hose reeler to its extensive range. The new model, which will be shown for the first time in the UK at LAMMA 2025, is designed to handle bigger diameter spools which can comfortably accommodate 1400m of 5” or 1200m of 6” diameter drag hose.

“This introduction is primarily in response to customer demand,” explained Tramspread sales manager James Peachey. “Everything is steadily getting larger, and we had already increased from 600m to 1,000m, so we see 1,400m as a natural progression. We’ve had requests from the continent, and the first five off the production line have already been sold to France, but it is now available in the UK too.”

To accommodate the larger diameter spools the main frame has been enlarged and strengthened. The three-point linkage frame is also heavier, and the linkage brackets have been lowered to give additional lift height. The heavy-duty twin hydraulic motor drive system from the 1,000m reeler has been retained.

A new optional light bar can now be fitted above the reel and encompasses side lights and indicators which operate with the tractor’s lights whilst a remote-control fob is used to switch main beam and dip beam headlights and a central worklight bar. This bar also serves as a safety device to stop couplings from potentially damaging the tractor if the reel is operated too quickly. This new introduction will also be available for the 1,000m reeler.

“The larger reeler and spool with 1,400m of 5” drag hose weighs around three tonnes, so it needs a tractor of at least 250hp with an appropriate front linkage lift capacity to handle it properly,” points out James. “We are happy to accommodate customer demands with regard to colour, we recently finished some 1,400m reelers in grey for a French contractor. We have also changed the design of the Contractor Trailer to accommodate the larger spools.”
