CLIENT PROFILE

The client of this kitchen had a very outdated space and had high hopes for a new updated and classy kitchen. More space for friends and family and an easy traffic flow from the living room to the kitchen were the clients biggest wishes. A wall was taken down and stone columns were added to open up the space so natural light could flow in from the living room windows. The NKBA guidelines were kept in mind when designing this kitchen. The refrigerator, cook top, and sink were all adjusted to keep the work triangle up to standards.

In this two week group charette, a high end luxurious bathroom was designed. An ADA shower was constructed for the client’s needs, as well as a large private toilet area with privacy from the rest of the space. The luxury continues with a built in fireplace, spacious sitting area, and a beverage center for an early morning coffee.

CLIENT PROFILE

Professional Chef Professional Dancer Dance studio in house Likes to entertain & cook for friends Large wine collection Wants an open and spacious apartment Use of natural light The Harper’s loft apartment was a single floor, outdated space. By keeping their wishes in mind, natural light was incorporated into the space as well as open large spaces. A mezzanine level was added for more space and to utilize the large ceiling heights. A separate entrance for Mrs. Harper’s dance studio was created so that the living and working space is not combined, giving everyone a sense of privacy.

CLIENT PROFILE Pre-drafting schematic sketches

Keeping the clients needs and wants in mind, a fresh new bedroom was designed. A new entertainment center and new headboard shelf, was what really freshened up this room, as well as the olive - toned colors that really pop against the dark wood. These schematic drawings and sketches really helped the client visualize the new space.

Furniture Selections

During first time consultations with clients, I would take notes on everything from design dislikes to favorite colors. Once Jacqueline Zinn Design confirmed the project, I would begin looking on budget friendly store’s websites. I would pick out furniture that met the clients needs and would then make a corresponding floor plan to show where to place the furniture.

Advertising

In order to grow the business, Jacqueline Zinn Design turned to the Internet for some advertising. I made posts on different web and social media sites. Many people contacted JZD with their design dilemmas.

Consultations I traveled all over Chicagoland with Jacqueline Zinn to perspective clients homes and businesses. The few different consultations that I went on were; follow ups, first time consultations, paint color consultations, and staging consultations.

Field Measures

During all types of consultations, Jacqueline and I would measure out rooms and walls to get a better understanding of the space and make it easier for furniture and artwork selections. I would then write everything down and make a simple floor plan sketch.

I worked on the above model in Google SketchUp. An outdated Chicago condo was recently purchased by a new client and they began many renovations. The second photo is the proposed living room with a new built in entertainment center and fireplace.

The Quarter Note

Thesis

In this senior level course, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instructor approval. Students then develop a viable and visual solution for the topic researched. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.

Kids Kare Pediatrics

Sustainable Design

This studio course focuses on environmental issues concerning interior designers and the construction industry. Students participate in discussions on green design topics and learn about resources for improving indoor air quality and more responsible design choices. Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) analysis, a final project implements sustainable design methods technically and creatively.

In this detailing team project, a custom made object from an existing interior space was selected. It was then deconstructed in order to discover the construction and the materiality. Team members researched the feature and described different ways to materialize the object using alternative materials and methods. The project was broken down using 2D and 3D modeling techniques to fully understand the parts and the whole.
