water works KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI The Water Works Archive and Gallery is located in the River Market District of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. It functions as a center for the entertainment and education of locals and visitors alike. It highlights the past, present, & future of water infrastructure technologies and sustainability. The designed elements on the site work with the natural environment, utilizing light, spatial hierarchy, and a distinct procession to the river. This influences circulation in a way that emulates the natural movement of water.

The process model below explores ideas about form and stucture, and how the two harmonize with the overall design concept.

timber in the city BOOKLYN, NEW YORK This multipurpose building is proposed for the neighborhood of Red Hook, in Brooklyn, New York. The driving concept is to draw in people of the surrounding areas by providing a cutting-edge, sustainable space to live, work, play, and gather. The innovative wooden structure allows for an open floor plan and flexible spaces that make for an interesting user experience and a strong connection from interior to exterior. This project is designed to be recognized. It will be identified as a habitat for fostering connections to the environment, the city, and the community.

EVOLUTION OF FORM

Inhabitants are able to interact with the structure inside and outside of the building. Nature is brought into the space and the glass facade helps maintain a strong visual connection to the environment.

trauma center ROATAN, HONDURAS The preliminary design of a level 3 trauma center for the island of Roatan, off the coast of Honduras, was a group effort of five team members. I contributed to the generation of the overall concept and proposals for plans, details, and aesthetics. Natural ventilation, daylighting, and harvesting of solar energy and water were key passive strategies for conserving energy and keeping operating costs down for the struggling community. This facility is needed to provide locals with the medical treatment and technologies currently unavailable to them.

POINTS OF ENTRY

PASSIVE STRATEGIES

galeria rivali ROME, ITALY

The Gallery of the Rivals is a modern addition to Piazza Navona, in Rome, Italy. It exhibits the historical life, work, and rivalry of two famous artists; Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Visitors are encouraged to create their own experience by moving freely about the gallery and observing displays in any way they choose. Water, views, and axes connect the spaces within the gallery and tie it back to the existing and historical context of the piazza. Users will see the differences between these “rivals, but will discover their profound influence on history and Piazza Navona, which connects them.

The “link” (below, right) is the third exhibit space in the gallery. It is transparent and positioned to have a strong connection to the piazza and optimal views of the work of both artists.

THE “LINK”

This project was designed by myself and two other students. The process was a combined effort of the group, and the final display work was divided evenly. My work includes concept statement, diagrams, sections, etc. Kate Gutierrez constructed the model and Kelsey Helland was responsible for the other drawings.
