THE DUNKIRK EVACUATION 1940
OPERATION DYNAMO AND THE SHIPS THAT SAVED AN ARMY
THE DUNKIRK EVACUATION 1940 Operation Dynamo: Dunkirk 80 years on
Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk, began on 26 May and ended on 3 June 1940. This book provides short histories of well over 200 ships, from ferries to tugs, warships to barges, and little ships to lifeboats that crossed the Channel to save Allied soldiers from the Germans, as well as photographs of many of them. Unfortunately, the 80th anniversary Return to Dunkirk by the Little Ships, scheduled for May, has been cancelled due to the current restrictions on public events, but this outstanding new book provides anyone interested in the famous evacuation with details of the ships and craft which went to help. shop.kelsey.co.uk

itles in the On the Buses series alternate between the ‘colour files’ and the mainly black and white and, much older material, based around the Chris Hodge ‘Stilltime’ Collection and other mono archive collections. In both cases, the books contain 100 pages, with stiff card covers and are printed on high quality paper in A4 format. Even numbered issues are the ‘colour files’ edited by Paul Appleton, while the odd-numbered issues are the mono editions edited by Vintage Roadscene editor, Mike Forbes. The ‘colour file’ editions are bursting with colour images, mainly from the 1950s and ‘60s – with some taken in the early years of the 1970s – a period when very few people
were recording the bus scene in glorious colour. Fortunately, two men who did, Jeff Colledge and his friend Geoff Lumb, have come together to give us an excellent insight to the contemporary scene at that time, covering the fleets of a variety of operators from the south of England to the Scottish Highlands and from the South Wales valleys to East Anglia. The mono editions go back even further and, therefore, are largely in monochrome, with some material dating back to the 1930s, but mainly from the early post-war years. Manufacturers’ official pictures and other promotional material, buses at commercial vehicle shows and on test cover a wide range of subjects, but most

of the pictures were taken during visits to operators around the country to go with contemporary magazine articles. As interesting as the buses themselves, in their evocative period liveries, are the street scenes in which they operate, with the advertising, vehicles and fashions of the day providing a wonderful insight into times gone by. Almost 200, previously unpublished images are contained within each issue; you can almost smell the leather seats, hear the clippie’s ticket machine and the crash of the gearbox as we set off on a trail of discovery, to a time of municipal transport and early nationalisation of Britain’s unique public service vehicle scene – a time long gone and never to return.

HEAVY FREIGHT - DIESEL & ELECTRIC shop.kelsey.co.uk
DIESEL & ELECTRIC
TYPE FIVE AND OTHER HEAVYWEIGHT MOVERS
The latest in the series of ‘Railways of Britain’ bookazines is a comprehensive review of heavy freight haulage on Britain’s railways in the Diesel & Electric era. In the early days of British Railways, its policy was for all diesel locomotives to have a mixed traffic function, but as freight trains became heavier, this policy failed as a real need for dedicated locomotives capable of handling the heaviest trains emerged. Categorised at Type 5 by BR, those locomotives of 3,000hp and above were late in development, with the Class 56 becoming Britain’s first dedicated heavy haulage freight locomotive. This 100-page bookazine charts the development of these heavyweight machines through BRs Class 58s and 60s and the subsequent invasion of American built machines such as the Classes 59 and 66. The Class 57s, rebuilt from Class 47s and the ‘Super-powered 37/9s’ are discussed, along with the new generation of Classes 68, 70 and 88 and the dual-voltage Class 92s that have revolutionised freight haulage in Britain. Edited by Paul Appleton, with contributions from leading authors Chris Booth, Evan Green-Hughes and John Chalcraft, Heavy Freight – Diesel & Electric is on sale 27th November 2020

enthusiasts at the time, it’s only with their passing that we appreciate what an important role these systems played in industrial Britain. Covering both standard and narrow gauge, some of the

There have been many innovations and some quite novel solutions both in Britain and overseas and a good deal of those pioneering lines are still with us today as part of our heritage scene, while others were ripped up and are now distant

Britain was the world pioneer of railways, but the development of the narrow gauges is more of an international phenomenon. Rails of a narrower width were used where terrain was more tricky, such as mountainous regions, across rough ground – such as forested areas or supplying the trenches during wartime – and for lines in more rural,

SCAMMELL COMMANDER
This mighty 65-tonne Rolls-Royce powered tractor that was designed to replace the ageing Thornycroft Antar in West Germany... but which went on to acquit itself superbly in both Gulf Wars, as well as in the former Yugoslavia. Originally described as the Antar Mk 4, and later as the Contractor Mk 2, the Commander was typical of the massive heavy-duty trucks for which Scammell had become

It wasn’t until the 24 February 1984 - almost 16 years since the project was initiated - that the first Commander entered service, with the last following in early 1985. A mid-life rebuild was necessary after the first Gulf War, which

another 30 years. After being demobbed, many enjoyed equally-long second careers with heavy-haulage operators such as Wynns, who had 30, and Pickfords, who had 12, with plenty more in service up and down the land. These mighty trucks were often asked to move enormous, almost impossible, loads from factory to dockside or

Entering service at the beginning of the fifties, the Antar was based on a commercial oilfield truck that just happened to be ‘in the right place at the right time’ and was pressed into military service! It proved to be enormously capable, eventually replacing the wartime Diamond T, and serving until the early ‘eighties. ■ The story of Antar’s early years ■ The development of three ‘marks’ of the military Antar ■ Antar in service ■ Antar in private hands ■ More than 175 rare images S CLASSIC ELERS

In 2003, the Commander started to be replaced by the Oshkosh M1070F, and a total of 100 surplus Commanders were sold to Jordan. Today, it is believed that just three Commanders remain in Britain.

This issue it is the turn of the late John Crawley’s archive, with a focus on his monochrome collection of pictures, in particular those focused on the steam wagon, both overtype and undertype. John was a real pioneer of steam preservation, saving and owning many engines himself, as well as being the man behind the early Expo steam events and the founding father of today’s highly active and successful Bedfordshire Steam Engines Preservation Society. Organiser of over 80 steam rallies, John Crawley saved up to 30 steam traction engines for preservation from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s (many are featured here) at a time when they were considered not much more than worthless scrap. Indeed he became the first owner of no less than 22 of them. As well as engines at the early rallies (many of which have since changed hands, liveries and names along the way) this volume also includes engines at rest at the end of their working lives (some made

group Al Qaeda. Politicians had the support of the public after the devastating attacks on New York and Washington and the stated aim was to provide security and stability for Afghanistan and make sure terrorists did not regroup in the country. Having secured Kabul the UK government then agreed to move into Helmand and expand Nato’s security plan. Politicians did not listen to their commanders on the ground yet despite this, young men and women fought like lions and in the first year in Helmand defeated the enemy on the battlefield. But the success was not reinforced and the war dragged on. Instead of a planned three-year mission as Ministers announced, the conflict spanned the tenures of three Prime Ministers, and cost the lives of 453 British service personnel and thousands of Afghans, as well as hundreds of wounded British soldiers. This first issue of a brilliant new series covers Britain’s intervention and the early years of the bloody campaign. In the second issue, the war takes a new direction with the support of the US Marines, followed by the Exit Strategy and handing over of control to the Afghan national Security Force.
