Definition: Theme The theme is the main subject of the story.

Sally and Conrad’s mother left the house in their trust. The Cat in the Hat saw that as an opportunity to test Sally and Conrad. The Fish tries to keep Sally and Conrad from allowing the Cat in the Hat to mess up the house. The Fish is the opposite of the Cat in the Hat because he wants to be obedient and keep the house clean, while the Cat in the Hat just wants to do whatever he wants to do and not follow any rules. Â

What was the theme of The Cat in the Hat?

Theme: Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun.

What does this theme mean?

The theme of The Cat in the Hat means that in order to follow the rules and have fun at the same time, there needs to be structure. Without there being any fundamentals, there is only chaos. The Cat in the Hat is very messy and does not like listening, but the Fish always wants to follow the rules and keep order. Sally and Conrad are confused on what to do. Should they follow the rules with the Fish, or should they join the fun with the Cat in the Hat? Sally and Conrad are actually able to do both! You can have fun while following the rules at the same time.
