LETTER FROM THE

EDI TORS EMILY RIBICK & CARLY HILL

The final semester of the year is drawing to a close, and we’re all looking forward to new opportunities. The coming months will bring you new classes, new jobs, and to new cities. For graduating seniors like us, spring is especially defined by these new possibilities. While we’re excited about moving forward, we can’t help but to look back at the legacy we are leaving behind on the places, people, and things that we love. Being Editors-in-Chief of VIM Magazine will always hold some of our most cherished Michigan State memories. The two of us could not be prouder of the accomplishments our VIM family has made. This year, we’ve watched VIM grow into the cherished magazine we knew it always had the potential to be. VIM has become not only a magazine, but also a professional organization where MSU students gain knowledge and experience about the magazine industry. Our events have reached out to a wider variety of people, businesses, and organizations in the MSU community than

ever, and we’re excited to see these relationships prosper in the future. In our magazine’s short history, more students have become engaged with VIM than ever before, and this has been one of our most major accomplishments. Even though we’re sad to leave you, we know that everyone on staff will continue to create a magazine celebrating style, confidence, and inclusion all MSU students can be proud of. We have no doubt that the best is yet to come for VIM Magazine. This spring we challenge all of you to think about the legacy you are leaving behind. If you’re a graduating senior, reflect on how your Spartan legacy has influenced you. If you’re a freshman returning home for the summer, use your personal goals to shape your own Spartan Saga. Although as individuals we are incredibly diverse, MSU has helped all of us to grow. Leave your mark on the school that is always “fighting with a vim.”

FASHION FORECAST:

ICY PASTELS

This spring’s fashion forecast: a high chance of soft pastel hues with an icy edge. Taking note from a sometimesinconsistent Mother Nature, designer labels such as Rag & Bone, Nonoo and Zimmerman have created spring lines with shimmering color palettes that embody the eerily beautiful collision of frosty temperatures and spring blossoms. This season’s icy pastel pieces offer a modern twist on the classic Easter egg palette with iridescent finishes and hints of metallic shine.

RAG & BONE

At first glance, the eye-catching effects of this trend may seem too bold to wear day-to-day. If worn correctly, icy pastels offer a sleek look that charms all onlookers. To create a flirty ensemble for a night on the town, try pairing black patent platform soles with a satin crossover playsuit in a pale orchid hue. To give your daytime wardrobe a hint of glam, try accenting a blush satin skort with a black-andwhite striped top. If you’re looking to add an extra touch of color to your ensemble, give your look a little extra pastel pop with flat periwinkle sandals. Allow your style to blossom with this new twist on an old classic: it’s time to trade out your sherbet-hued Sunday best circa 1998 for a more some sophisticated pieces that offer a bit of icy edge. BIG (girl) PANTS After dying out as a 70’s fad, the wide-leg trouser, or the “palazzo pant,” has made its grand return on the spring runway. Collections from BCBG Max Azria, Rachel Zoe, Philosophy, and many others prove that wide leg trousers are a must-have for every fashionforward girl’s spring wardrobe. These retro slacks are incredibly flattering as they cinch above the waist to elongate the figure, creating the illusion of mile-long legs. Paired with an oxford buttondown, a cluster necklace and pointed flats, the palazzo pant completes a polished ensemble that is perfect for business casual events. To create a more festive look for a night out on the town, try pairing colorfully printed wide-leg trousers with a cap sleeve crop top and pointed t-strap heels. This retro trend is back, and if styled correctly the palazzo pant might just stick around a little while longer. KATHLEEN CROWLEY

Designer’s ready-to-wear collections like have proved that spring 2014 is all about showing a little skin. Designed for the everyday woman exuding confidence and attractiveness in a subtle and comfortable way, lingerie-inspired pieces offer a look that is full-on flirty. The designers that embraced the temptress trend each offered their own spin on romantic silhouettes and scandalous hemlines. While Dolce & Gabbana opted for lacy bralets in sultry reds and blacks, Jason Wu’s collection was done in a much more sporty and wearable manner. When incorporating this look into your everyday wardrobe, it is important to err on the side of caution—this trend walks a thin line between elegant sensuality and unrefined indecency. Opt out of wearing a seductive silk dress to your chem lab and instead try out the lingerie-look during a night out on the town. Pair a pastel silk cami and a matching lace bralet with destroyed, lightwash boyfriend jeans and black strappy pumps. Sporty

spice Sports-luxe is the starting to look like the comeback kid of high fashion, as it has once again made its return to the runway scene. Embraced by designers from Emilio Pucci to Vera Wang, the sports luxe trend offers a combination of sleek tailoring with flowing silhouettes. To achieve this sporty chic look, try a studded sports bra, mesh muscle tee and jogging-style trousers with strappy heels. For a more relaxed approach, try a loose tank with some leather “joggers,” a faux leather baseball cap and Nike Airs. This trend is easy to recreate whether you live on Park Avenue in NYC or Park Lane in East Lansing. Just a little off the Spring is approaching, and that means it is time to cut that Neanderthal mane you have grown over this long, polar winter. You would be surprised how therapeutic shears can be. A popular style that has originated in the 1920s is making a comeback this spring. From David Beckham to the fashion runways, this clean and edgy hairstyle has dominated the hair scene since last year, and it is not showing any sign of letting up. The slicked back look with undercuts along the side of the temple is the modern take on the hairstyle your grandpa used to rock when picking up your grandma...or roughing up Socs. Socs, you ask? Read up on your Hinton. The hair is predominantly longer on top, about three to five inches. The sides can be buzzed down with a clipper setting of three to one. A lower number indicates a shorter hair length. Do not be afraid to ask your barber for their opinion; it is

22

their job, after all, to know what hairstyle will form to your face. If you do not have a preferred barber, look for the guy in the barbershop with a switch comb knife protruding from his pocket. He is your best bet. The finer your hair is, the longer the length should be. Fading from the temples down to the sideburns is key to making this haircut look clean and sophisticated. Hair product is necessary. American Crew Pomade, Without any setting spray $10.98, Walgreens or pomade, your hair will set incorrectly, and you will run the risk of having a fro or a mohawk. American Crew’s pomade is made for medium hold and high shine, while TowelDry’s styler is used as a base before blow-drying. One more tip: do not be that guy who has his initials or some star shaved into the side of his head, you will look TOWELDRY Spray Styler, ridiculous. $18.00, birchbox.com JONATHAN BEERS

Worn by fraternity brothers and European models alike, short shorts are making a comeback. A shorter inseam can be a liberating experience, especially in the face of extreme heat—it’s all about a slim cut. Men are baring more leg, and this is something we can definitely get behind. Need a little more proof? Check out Chubbies. It’s a small company in San Francisco that has taken the matter of bad shorts into its own hands. It seeks to rid the world of cargo shorts forever by offering a short, tailored approach. All signs point to this trend exploding in a few months. How to pack for your study abroad Skin Care Products

No matter your location, caring for your skin is a 24-hour responsibility. Your style will catch passerby’s interest, but your self-maintenance will hold their attention. Yes, you have the option of keeping all of your hygienic products inside of a Ziploc bag, but this cotton and leather combination is more fitting for products such as Baxter of California.

Sturdy pants

Regardless of your preferred style, it is always essential to have a pair of pants for every occasion. From athletic linen shorts for a day at the beach to tapered chinos for when you’re at the local cafe, you want to impress upon the locals that you are prepared for any situation. Match any of these products with a simple white v-neck. Simplicity is far better than complexity.

Open up that suitcase you just closed and postpone your self-gratification. If you’re like the majority of vacationers who overpack, then you threw in any piece of clothing you’ve worn during the past few months. You say to yourself, “sure, I’ll wear that,” as you toss your high school workout tee in your luggage. Let’s be honest—no you wont. The key to packing for any prolonged trip, especially study abroad, is to pack sparingly. Take a few notes from our list of study abroad must haves, and leave that neon orange “Save the Boobies” snapback home in ‘Merica where it belongs. JONATHAN BEERS

Multiple shades

Bringing shades on a sun-filled study abroad is a no-brainer. But bringing two pairs is called planning ahead. Summer Sandals for men Summer has taken its time arriving, but we all know that the sunshine will be well worth the wait. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, lying on the beach or simply walking around the city, summer sandals are an obvious choice for the warmer months. Not sure which sandals to get? Plan on picking up a decked out pair—rock star footwear is in. Giuseppe Zanotti is adding gold plates, Givenchy has pasted on silver chains, and DSquared2 is pushing boundaries with spikes. Comfortable leather sandals with a bit of rock-and-roll attitude will put a spring in your step. Not entirely comfortable with bling on your feet? That’s totally fine too—go for the strappy look instead. You’re still way on trend. RAINIE JIANG Givenchy Palladio Leather Chain-Strap Sandal, $860, BERGDORF GOODMAN Givenchy Sandal

HAIR

REMEDY GUIDE Winter weather leaves hair dry and frayed, so it’s no surprise if this year’s polar vortex was especially brutal to your precious strands. But don’t worry, those split ends are not the end of the world! No matter your hair type, we’ve got you covered. Check out these remedies for treating the most common hair mishaps. HANNAH WATTS & JADE WISELOGLE

Thin, breaking hair The Fix: a heat protector Redken’s Smooth Lock Heat Glide works on damp, towel-dry hair, acting as a barrier between hair and styling tools. The smoothing spray contains almond oil that penetrates deep into strands to strengthen hair while keeping it safe from heat and humidity. Redken Smooth Lock Heat Glide, $16.50, Ulta

Frizzy or dull, untamable hair The Fix: a smoothing serum If your sleek strands seem to disappear within hours, leaving your locks in a frizzy mess, don’t fret. L’Oreal Paris recently launched a sprayable smoothing serum that spritzes hair with a fine mist, avoiding the greasy effects accompanied by usual serums. L’Oreal Sleek It Strand Smoother Serum Spray, $4.99, Ulta

Faded, color-treated hair The Fix: shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair Overcome the effects of winter and emerge this spring with freshlooking color that looks as though you just left the salon. Of course, hair color fades with time, but using a sulfate-based shampoo or conditioner helps lock in color, prolonging the fading process. Clear Damage & Color Repair Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner work together to leave locks looking soft and shiny, so you don’t have to shampoo your hair every day, causing color to fade quicker.

Flat, fine hair The Fix: root-volumizing spray or mousse Those of us with thinner, fine-textured locks truly understand just how dead the harsh weather conditions can leave our hair feeling. Now that spring is in full swing, it’s time to kick it up a notch. Static and stringy strands be gone! Inked INKED

Spartans know all about finding different ways to express themselves. We love to communicate our individuality through our studies, taste in music, outfit choices—even through our tattoos. While mainstream tattooing was created long before our generation, new trends have emerged, blurring the lines of what we know as art, beauty, and style. CAITLIN TAYLOR & LAUREN EVASIC

Whimsical, cursive fonts weren’t made just for paper— just ask Demi Lovato. The rock star’s “strength” wrist ink and “now I’m a warrior” shoulder tattoo symbolize empowerment and triumph.

say goodbye to stress

According to Psychology Today, college students are showing greater levels of stress than any other time in our nation’s history. One glance at the Main Library on any given Sunday evening affirms that MSU students are stressed out. High levels of stress don’t help you study for your econ exam any more efficiently than normal. Not only is stress not helping you during a study session, but it actually works against you in a number of different ways. We’re here to help you stay stress free in order to be a more efficient studier, and an overall happier Spartan. EMILY RIBICK

What Stress Does 34

Stress has a disastrous effect on your entire body. Stress produces adrenaline, which can negatively affect your memory, ability to focus, and increase your chance of becoming depressed. At high-stress moments, you may find that you feel short of breath. Overtime, this shortness of breath can leave you susceptible to upper-respiratory infections. It also elevates your glucose levels, making stressed out students more at risk for becoming diabetic. Super stressed students are also more at risk to experience

heart disease, a heart attack, a stroke, ulcers, severe heartburn, back pain, osteoporosis, and even acne. Stress also affects your personal life. Feeling stressed limits your ability to communicate with others, which can negatively affect your social skills and how others perceive you. Acute stress can even affect intimacy—stress can lower your sex drive and cause more severe menstrual discomfort. Stress can also leave you feeling nervous, which lowers your confidence and self esteem.

Destressing Tips It seems that now more than ever students need help relaxing. We came up with a few tips that will help you kick stress to the curb for good.

Forgive Someone

As students, we’re thinking about a lot more than just our next exam. We’re thinking about our annoying roommate, an argument with a family member, and how your best friend just broke your favorite coffee mug. Forgiving these people will ease your troubled mind so you can stay focused on the task at hand.

Open the window Studies indicate that we have steadier heart rates when we’re connected to nature. So crack the window, smell the magnolia blossoms, and relax with a cup of tea while you finish your big term paper.

pucker up A peck a day keeps the stress away. Kissing will make you feel less isolated, which is an often-felt side affect of stress.

find your inner yogi

There’s nothing more therapeutic than giving your body some much needed love during a great yoga class. Yoga not only relieves tension in your muscles and helps your bones grow stronger, but heavy breathing exercises offer a form of mediation that eases a fretting mind.

Head to olin

Be sure to pick up your allergy prescriptions this spring. Studies show that people with allergies often experience stress, mood dips, and depression when symptoms flare.

DIY YOUR WAY TO A Dream Space Dream

Back in October, we began our house hunt for the next school year by signing leases for amazing apartments (three blocks off campus…), or jumping at the chance to score a single room in Mary Mayo. In the back of our minds we have already started planning those dream retreats, where we can spend our Sundays pigging out on Pokey Sticks and watching Netflix marathons of our favorite shows. Live Large

e campus, here are some tricks to mak Whether you live in the dorms or off CIO LUC larger than they actually are. MIA GAL

those tight spaces feel way

Declutter

This may seem like a basic step, but once you start picking through your belongings, you will realize how much you actually own. Perks of decluttering are finding long lost treasures and having less to keep clean in the long run. By clearing out, you will have more space for the new finds you will acquire down the road. Keep your closet organized Especially in the dorms, having an open closet strewn with clothes can be a nightmare. Tidy up and always unpack promptly. Having an organized closet will make your area feel spacious, as well as inspire future OOTDs. Fun Tip A unique idea for getting started is to arrange the belongings you are keeping in a specific pattern or order. For example, re-arranging items by color provides an awesome focal point as well as structure and organization.

Focus on Furniture

Pulling items away from the wall and letting some pieces float, another cheap fix, will highlight your space and make it feel larger. If you are looking to purchase new furniture or home decor, keep these ideas in mind. Buy simple bedding Solids in muted colors will make your space feel large and fresh. Avoid large, bright patterns. They draw too much attention to the bed and will make your room feel cramped. Buy items that are multipurpose Storage ottomans or even tables that easily fold up are great options to keep in mind when decorating. The more flexibility and mobility your furniture has, the greater use you will get out of it. Plus, it provides so much more open space. Remember, just because something is functional, does not mean you will have to sacrifice style.

Lighten up

Dark, drab spaces can make your room feel smaller than it is. For an easy fix, use what you have. Keep blinds or drapes open to reveal natural light. Further, bring mirrors into your space. Having them not only allows light to bounce, but it will add depth and dimension to your space. Switch up lighting arrangements Overhead lighting can become boring and unflattering, so add several lighting elements, spread out. This draws the eye around the room and gives the illusion of more space. Need a unique idea? Try soft pink bulbs. They create an airy, rosy glow without being overwhelming. Brighten your space Stick to light, even pale hues next time you are ready for a new color scheme. While dark hues can often be trendy, spaces will feel more cavernous when used in great amounts and won’t reflect nearly as much light. Plus, light colors are easy to accent and perfect for that pop of this season’s “it” color.

local BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT From a luxurious mink scarf from the ‘30s, to a bundle of fondue pots from the groovy ‘70s, Love, Betti is the place for authentic vintage finds from all eras. Appropriately nestled in Lansing’s historic district, Love, Betti is just a few minutes west on Grand River from MSU’s campus. Shoppers with a unique style and taste will find an eclectic mix of art, home furnishings and wearable fashion pieces. Owner Kristin Olson personally searches and hand-picks only the best vintage items that are high in quality and craftsmanship for her shop. “I’m a perfectionist when it comes to what I put in my store,” said Olson. Most of what you will find at Love, Betti are rooms filled with mid-century modern furniture. Olson remarks that a lot of customers are interested in finding these kinds of pieces. “The Mad Men look is really hot right now,” comments Olson. From casted fiberglass chairs and vibrant area rugs to a wooden coffee-to-dinner table with adjustable legs, Love, Betti is the perfect place to find that rare addition to complete any room’s look. Although Love, Betti specializes in home furnishings, it also offers accessories and large selection of vintage clothing. Tucked away from the rest of the store, some of the pieces currently on racks include a hand-tailored, raw silk suit circa the 60’s mod era, houndstooth coats, Scottish handwoven vests, and a mustardyellow leather miniskirt. Most articles are from brands of the

time and some are tagless, but if you’re lucky, you may find vintage Chanel, Oscar De La Renta, Saks 5th Avenue, or even Bergdorf Goodman pieces. Depending on which item you fall in love with, prices range from $20 hats to a large selection of $90 furs. Love, Betti’s vintage clothing comes from all time eras, but most pieces are from the mid 1940’s to 1960’s. Along with quality vintage finds, Love, Betti is also known for their turnover. Customers can always expect to find something new to add to their homes or wardrobes. Olson is currently making room for newly found spring clothing that will be hitting racks within the next couple of months. Customers can expect to find sundresses, maxi skirts, and even palazzo jumpsuits! “We have many frequent and returning customers because they can always find a new piece to add to their collection,” said Olson. Olson finds her merchandise from a variety of places, but most come from sellers that have contacted her. “Often times, I will be invited into homes to look at pieces,” said Olson. Whether you are looking for a pair of vintage leather gloves, a timeless slip dress, or a bright desk chair, Love, Betti is the place in Lansing to find quality authentic vintage at affordable prices and always something different. DRESS TO IMPRESS

SPARTAN STYLE

Meet Aisha, Kenny, and Kelsie, this spring’s cover model contest winners! Earlier this semester, VIM poured through the applications of dozens of outstanding Spartans and graded each application based on academic achievement, leadership, community service, and a self-titled category called “vimmyness.” MSU students voted on the top 20 of these applicants, and these three pulled out as the winners, earning themselves the opportunity to be featured in our young professionals themed photo shoot. Our cover model is Aisha Bynum. Aisha is a sophomore majoring in social relations and policy in the James Madison College here at MSU, and she’s also minoring in public relations and Spanish. While her major is challenging, Aisha is still a Dean’s List member. Volunteering is important to Aisha; she’s served at Safe Haven House, walked in the Breast Cancer Society walk, and volunteered at a local community center where she helped tutor children. Last summer, Aisha worked at an A-list law firm. After graduating college, Aisha is hoping to become either a lawyer or public relations director. Also featured in our shoot is junior Kelsie Darin. Kelsie is studying human biology and manages to hold an impressive 3.77 GPA. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority where she holds leadership positions. Out of school and her sorority, you can find Kelsie working her two jobs. The first is here at Michigan State, where she works as a student-athlete tutor. Her second job is working for a start-up jewelry company called Chloe and Isabel. Kelsie was the number #1 campus merchandiser in the nation for the company this past fall. We think Kelsie exemplifies hard work and leadership, just like a top-notch Spartan should.

Our last, but certainly not least, contest winner is Kenny Williams Jr., a sophomore from Detroit, MI. Kenny is majoring in communication with two specializations in public relations and connected learning. He’s also a resident assistant in Holden Hall, and works as a student assistant in Residential and Hospitality Services. Giving back is important to Kenny— he has assisted underprivileged youth in Mexico and was a site leader on an Alternative Spartan Break trip this past spring break. In the evenings, you can find Kenny working as an undergraduate research assistant and attending meetings for the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice and the African-American Student Mentoring Program. Our boy wonder has also landed internships at Quicken Loans and the Detroit Free Press. In his free time, you could probably find Kenny tutoring residents and listening to Beyoncé. The VIM creative team had a blast shooting with these outstanding Spartans. We couldn’t think of any young professionals more confident, peppy, or impressive than this trio. We’d like to congratulate not just our three winners, but also our semi-finalists. Our winners and semi-finalists all demonstrated the ambition, generosity, and style all Spartans strive for. Borrow an outfit, shoes included, from your most fashionforward friend.

Call your best friend for a few words of encouragement. No need to be nervous!

Pack a few extra breath mints and pieces of gum.

Spend an embarrassing amount of time doing your hair. Don’t worry, your date is probably doing the same thing.

Triple check yourself in the mirror before stepping out. You don’t want to be the bozo with spinach in their teeth.

Wear your favorite perfume or cologne. Research shows that a good scent is subconsciously connected to human attraction. Dance around to the classic Blink 182 song, “First Date.” The song is scientifically proven to remove any first date jitters. Skip talking about your ex. One study says that the number one conversation killer on a first date is past relationships.

SPARTAN SUCCESS

MATTHEW OWENS For Matthew Owens, his career in the fashion industry started at Glamour magazine, but he began his journey to a career in the fashion world right here at MSU. The summer before entering his senior year, Owens landed an internship in the fashion closet at a Condé Nast publication, and he became hooked on New York City and the fashion industry. After completing his internship, Owens headed back to East Lansing to finish up his degree in retail and fashion merchandising, but he had big plans to return to the Big Apple. Like so many others after graduation, Owens headed to New York and crashed on a friend’s couch until he landed an internship at Iconix Group, a brand management company that owns labels like Mudd, Mossimo, Joe Boxer and Badgley Mischka. From there, Matthew got his first job at a boutique public relations firm, Michelle Marie PR. Staying with Michelle Marie for about six months, Owens was then offered a position as a Media Relations Assistant at Bloomingdale’s. He continued to work hard and was eventually promoted after two years to a Media Relations Coordinator, where he stayed for about another year. Matthew now holds his current position as Public Relations Specialist at EXPRESS, where he has been for about six months. In his current position, Owens spends much of his time reading and staying up to date on fashion and pop-culture, which allows him to feed information to his team about the fashion industry or potential opportunities for EXPRESS. He also works with editors, stylists and producers from all the top fashion magazines, like Glamour, ELLE and Vogue, along with broadcast outlets like the Today Show and E! News. But, Matthew notes that there really is no “typical” workday for him, as he has a hand in public relations, marketing, events and many other facets of the industry. So, how does a one-time server at Mitchell’s Fish Mar-

ket eventually become a public relation’s specialist for a top fashion brand like EXPRESS? Well, it wasn’t easy, and Owens attributes most of his success to working hard and making connections. “Meet EVERYONE you can,” suggests Owens. “The contacts you make now and throughout your life will help you find your dream job.” He also emphasizes the importance of interning and gaining valuable experience, believing that interning is crucial in this industry. Finally, don’t give up! “The industry can be very difficult and you will most likely put in a lot of long hours of work, but in the end, it's definitely worth every minute of it,” says Owens. It’s been four years since Owens graduated from MSU, but he still longs for football tailgates and lazy Sundays spent with friends. A lot has changed for Owens, but he knows that his experiences at Michigan State University, the friends he made and the people he met helped shape him and prepare him for the life he leads today.

LOOK GOOD, DO GOOD YORK APPAREL

What started out as a basement hobby quickly spiraled into an expanding business and charitable cause. When Josh York, now a junior at Michigan State University, took a liking to the winter hats at ACO Hardware during a part-time job, he thought it would be a neat idea to screen print and sew on his own label. The hat gained attention from fans when he wore it during one of his band’s local shows. When fans started catching on, Josh realized he would need to start making larger quantities to fill orders. His only prior sewing experience came from a class in middle school, so he spent time watching a variety of “how-to” YouTube videos in order to expand his line. He set up a web store so that customers could place orders directly. The line now includes his signature hats, as well as t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, bowties, and more. The idea of a one-for-one hat donation started right here at Michigan State. One day while walking through Cedar Village, Josh took notice of a homeless man who was dumpster diving. York took his hat off his head and gave it to the homeless man. The true gratitude expressed in response to this small act inspired Josh to do more. To create a larger impact, he soon came up with the idea of “helping the homeless, one hat at a time,” the tagline now associated with York Apparel. The idea is that for every hat purchased, one will be handed out to a homeless person in need. Josh wanted the efforts to be local, so he started in the place where homelessness has hit hardest, downtown Detroit. The company has since passed out hats to around 300 homeless Detroit residents. Hats are now sent every Saturday morning with PB & J Outreach, a volunteer group that provides social services to homeless people in Detroit. But York Apparel didn’t stop after Detroit. When well-known vocalist, The Ready Set, represented York Apparel on stage and on Instagram, the brand name gained national attention. News stations saw the postings and released a story on the company, giving York Apparel the publicity it needed to take off. “It all happened super quickly,” York recalls. “Now I’ve sold merchandise around the world.” As sales have spread, so has the cause—hats have been distributed to homeless people in Detroit, Lansing, East Lansing, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Nashville, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York, and Washington D.C. “People like helping out their own people,” Josh remarks. “They’d rather start helping out people in their own area.” Consequently, York Apparel is on a mission to spread across the nation. Total donations nationwide are about to break 1,000 hats. Interested in joining the cause? You can purchase York Apparel through the online store. The store even features an “invisible beanie,” a way to donate 100% of the proceeds. You can also help by sharing Josh York’s story. By spreading the word, you too will be helping the homeless, one hat at a time. JACQUELINE COX

As we end one school year, we can’t help but to think ahead to fall. Some of us may be graduating and starting a new chapter, while others will return to football games and falling leaves here in East Lansing. Either way, new trends are a cause to celebrate the season. We’ve rounded up three of the hottest trends that we’re anxious to try! CARLY HILL

RALPH LAUREN

If this past winter was any predictor of what’s to come next year, staying cozy and warm will remain a necessity here at MSU. Designers showed us glamorous ways to do just that by sending lots of fur down the runway. Whether you choose faux or real, a fur coat can instantly add some glamour to your look.

We would like to think Michigan State started this trend way before it hit the runway. One of the top color trends for fall was deep emerald green (one of our favorite colors, obviously). When you're not sporting tailgate gear, try emerald for a night out with friends. OPENING CEREMONY

Plaid has always been a favorite pattern for fall, but designers gave the classic print a twist for the upcoming season. Bright, colorful plaid is the way to go when dressing this fall, so don’t be afraid to wear a fun plaid jacket or chic sweater dress.
