KELSEY WILLIS SPRING 2017 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TULANE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
ABOUT KELSEY
I AM AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT AND FRENCH DOUBLE MAJOR FROM THE CITY OF BELLINGHAM, WA, NOW FINISHING UP MY THIRD YEAR AT TULANE UNIVERSITY. I AM EXTREMELY INTERESTED IN THE INTERSECTION OF ACTIVISM, SOCIAL, AND EVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE WITH THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE, AS WELL AS THE NECESSITY OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR BUILT ENVIRONMENT. OUTSIDE OF STUDIO & ON CAMPUS, I WORK WITH TULANE’S FOSSIL FUEL DIVESTMENT CAMPAIGN, COORDINATE SERVICE LEARNING AT THE TULANE CENTER FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, AND HEAD “THE CHARRETTE”, AN ORGANZATION DEDICATED TO EXPLORATION THROUGH INSTALLATION ART AND PRINT MEDIA (AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS!)

A REIMAGINATION OF AN EMPTY LOT IN THE RAPIDLY TRANSFORMING (GENTRIFYING) CENTRAL CITY NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS PROJECT CREATES A NEW URBAN COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL NODE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY, BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACE WHILE ENGAGING THE FORMAL ELEMENTS OF THE EXISTING COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR.

MUSEUM OF THE CITY NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
A NEIGHBORHOOD MUSEUM IN THE HISTORIC TREME, BASED IN ISTUDIES OF THE COMMUNITY AND ITS GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY
DRAWN AND COLLAGED INTERPRETATIONS OF A MARDI GRAS INDIAN SUIT PIECE
WE WERE CHALLENGED TO DEVELOP A MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE SPACE ON BLIGHTED SPACES IN HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS. THIS PROJECT IS SITED ON A HIGH-TRAFFIC CORNER OF BASIN STREET IN THE TREME. BUILDING DESIGN WAS BASED OFF OF A GEOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE DEVELOP OF NEW ORLEANS AS A WHOLE, LEADING TO A MORE COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ASTONISHINGCHANGES IN THE AREA.
SCALES OF SPRAWL: DRAWINGS OF NEW ORLEANS’ EXPANSION AND DENSITY
A CENTER FOR THE COLORFUL”MARDI GRAS INDIANS”, WHOSE TRADITIONS ARE ROOTED IN THE HISTORY OF NEW ORLEANS’ BLACK INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT. MEMBERS OF THE “TRIBES” ARE SOCIAL AND POLICITCAL LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES WHO HELP DEVEOP LOCAL PRIDE AND PRESERVE CULTURAL TRADITIONS.
MARDI GRAS INDIAN CULTURAL CENTER NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
THE CENTER CONTAINS WORKSHOP SPACES, ARTIST HOUSING, PERFORMANCE AND PRACTICE SPACES, AND TWO LARGE GALLERY / GATHERING AREAS, AS WELL AS A ROOFTOP SPACE. THE FORM IS DERIVED FROM TRADITIONAL NEW ORLEANS “CORNER STORE” TYPOLOGY TO RESTART A BUSY COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR IN A SENSITIVE, COMMUNITY-SERVING WAY
THE BUILDING IS IN DIRECT DIALOGUE WITH THE INTERSTATE, ACTING AS A BEACON TO THE NEIGHBORDHOOD ON THE OTHER SIDE AT NIGHTTIME, ACTIVATING AN OTHERWISE EMPTY AND SOMETIMES-UNSAFE STREETSCAPE
I DO LEAVE STUDIO SOMETIMES...
THANKS!
